Q Magazine snippets[Quotes]
_________________________________________________________________________________

Edge interview snippets -

- "I want people to listen to it as opposed to just buying it. I want this to be an album people go back to, and really get into, in-depth. Like all the records I love...........I think we've learned a few things over the years. So I think it could hopefully be a bringing to bear all of those eureka moments from the past. And I think it could be our best album."

***On Beach Clips - Edge heard them and Bono was cool with them being recorded, the others and the record company wasn't too happy. He blames it on the vino vérité!!!

Bono interview snippets -

- Bono on Tour plans. "Well, I can't say too much because the LiveNation people would die. But think its fair to say that what we've planned for outdoors has never been done before and that we've been working on it for a long time. It's a feat of engineering genius."

- Bono talks about a song called Tripoli which is a guy on a motorcycle, a Moraccan french cop, whos going AWOL. He drives though France and Spain down to this village outside of Cadiz where you can actually see the fires of Africa burning. After the interview Bono drove Paul Rees (Q Editor) around Shepards Bush and played two other songs not named.

Adam interview snippets -

- Q asks - Did the others have a good album? Adam - "I think this has been very, very hard. It's been hard on Edge, cos its taken a lot of his time. And Bono because he had to find new ways of expressing himself. Some of the lyrics are Bono writing in the third person, which is not something he has been very successful at before. Larry found it difficult as well. I had a really good record. And I dont say that very often. I normally have shit record where I really struggle."

- "From the first session Larry was performing on an electronic drum kit. Normally Larry drums so hard, it's very hard to spend hours working up stuff when you've got all this bang and clatter. But the electronic kit made him play in a certain way. So the music came from a distant place." Later Larry said this was the 1st time Eno sat down and went through building the drums.

Larry interview snippets -

- "Is it better? I think its some of the best music we've ever written. That's not the party line, I really believe that. Have we brought it to its ultimate and most appropriate conclusion? I dont know...its not quite what people would expect a U2 experimental thing would be. I mean, if you think of Zooropa or Passengers, this is not that. This has got a lot of weight."

Key Larry interview notes:
- He wants to get another album out sooner than later after this release as thye've loads of material.
- They got on well with Rick Rubin but just clashed as they dont like to just go in and complete songs, they need to improvise.
- He says he's careful over bono-isms. I think they've gagged Bono a bit more on this album!
- He holds no punches and wont tie the party line. He calls Tony Blair a war criminal and is uneasy seeing Bono mixing with him.
- Brian Eno said that Crazy Tonight was in a bad way which surprised Larry.
- He finishes his interview as one track only has Brain Eno tapping his chest and has no drum part.

Q Magazine snippets[SONGS]
________________________________________________________________

The 11 tracks to date are as follows:

Stand Up
Rousing groove-based rocker with shades of Led Zep and Cream. Edge mentions that they're trying to keep Stand Up in a rough state and not overproduce it by putting it through Pro-Tools which cleans up imperfections.

Edge - "Stand Up is just a great gutsy performance from everyone. Stand Up is a swaggering rock and roll song with a real groove.........there's some dirt in what your playing...............Yes, its totally unreasonable. If you're going to do a big guitar song I think you need to push it all the way. It started with a Moroccan rhythm and gone rock n roll."

Magnificent
Slow building anthem with the ambience of the Unforgettable Fire and laced with the wide eyed wonder of U2's earlier albums. Edge here is at his most dynamic. Features the line:"Only love can reset your mind".

Get Your Boots On
Formerly titled Sexy Boots this demented electro grunge employs a proto-rockn'roll riff, but propelled into the future, with a hip-hop twist in the middle. Feature bono in flirtacious, self depreciating mode: "I dont wanna talk about wars between nations".

Momement of Surrender
Georgiously melodic 7 minute song that already has the air of the U2 classic about it, with lyrics about dark stars and existential crises:"I did not notice the passers-by/And they did not notice me". Recorded in one take. This album's One.

Unknown Caller
Opens with the sound of birdsong recorded live in Fez. A middle eastern flavoured percussion loop drives this tale about a man"at the end of his rope" whose phone bizarrely begins texting him random instructions: "Reboot yourself","Password, enter here","You're free to go".
Dallas Schoo describes the song as "one of Edge's major solos in his life - you wont hear better than that on any other song".

No Line on the Horizon
Began life as a slow paced Eno-esque ambient treatment, before being dramatically reworked in the Olympic Sessions into an abrasive punk-rock tune akin to Vertigo, with its "No! Line!" chorus chant.

Bono - "It's the Buzzcocks meets Bow Wow Wow", reckons Bono.

Crazy Tonight
Upbeat pop track with distinct echoes of 60's era Phil Spector, particularly the moment when its chorus disappears into a wash of reverb. Centres around the line: "I'll go crazy If I dont go crazy tonight",

Bono - "Which sounds like a T=shirt slogan to me" notes the singer. Brian Eno said that Crazy Tonight was in a bad way which surprised Larry.

Every Breaking Wave
Lillywhite cues up the track, a slow burning track called Every Breaking Wave that gradually builds to a climax brimming with passion and intensity. Bono begins to sing rocking forward and backwards on his studio chair............he performs a note perfect vocal that employs the movement of the ocean as a
metaphor for the human struggle, before building to the plaintive line "I dont know if I'm that strong". Two takes and 10 minutes later its done. Key line "Every Sailor knows that the Sea/Is a friend made enemy"

Breathe
Arabic cello gives way to joyful chorus. Brian Eno says this is U2's best ever song. It's 8pm and Eno, Bono and Will.i.am are on Olympic Studio 1 writing a cello part for a song called Breathe that U2 - a touch ambitiously - are only beginning to record in ths final fortnight, never mind mix.............the singer belts out a rollicking vocal featuring door-to-door salesman, a cockatoo and a chorus that begins "Step out into the street.......sing your heart out".

Winter
6 minute ballad. Echoes of Simon & Garfunkel in this poignant, acoustic string laden ballad about a soldier in the snow of Afghanistan. Will appear in the new film 'Brothers' starring Tobey Maguire about the emotional fallout of the war. Edge on backing vocals with Bono for Winter.

Cedars of Lebanon

Daniel lanois instigated closer that finds Bono imagining himself as a weary, lovelorn war correspondent "squeezing complicated lives into a simple headline". Ends with the possibly telling line "Choose your enemies carefully cos they will define you"

Saturday December 27 2008

Ireland may be in the grip of a recession, but that didn't stop the masses descending upon Leopardstown for this year's races.

And it was here that U2 frontman Bono told the Herald all about the supergroup's new album.

The rocker said the elation that came from finishing the band's 12th album felt "like pouring brandy on the pudding".

Given that their first album since 2004 has been plagued with setbacks, it was little wonder that the world-famous star was kicking back and relaxing in Dublin this week.

shut

But in a clear sign that no industry is immune to the global credit crunch, Bono revealed how the legendary UK studio where they recorded their most recent material has now shut its doors.

"We were working very hard in London at a place called Olympic studios and that's where U2 was recording, but they closed down just before Christmas.

"That was a little sobering for everybody: a lot of people lost their jobs and it was a great studio. The Stones recorded Sympathy for the Devil there, The Who recorded there, as did Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles.

"So we didn't really get home until just before Christmas, but we're making up for it now."

U2 fans, who have been clamouring to hear their new material, will be delighted to with the news that the band were all thrilled with the final product, called No Line on the Horizon.

"There's a particular sound that we were looking for on this album that really suited that studio and we went there and we got a great result, we were very happy," Bono added.

"The album's finished, over and done with now. And you know the way the pudding arrives and you pour the brandy on it and set it on fire? That's pretty much what I'm doing now -- to myself!"

He explained how he's now looking forward to relaxing with his wife Ali and their four children, ahead of the album's release in March.

Flutter

The renowned humanitarian was among the throngs of racing fans who hoofed it out to Leopardstown for their annual St Stephen's Day flutter.

And despite all the talk of doom and gloom, this year's attendance figures were a mere 250 down on last year, with an impressive 16,744 making the trek out.

Business was brisk at the turnstiles as a decidedly young and trendy crowd headed out to try to make some easy money.

As usual, the fashionistas were out in force, with most choosing style over comfort ahead of tomorrow's Ladies Day event.

This season's hottest trend was clearly evident with plenty of wet-look leggings, coloured tights and seven-inch heels on display.

Down in the parade ring, there was no shortage of movers and shakers, despite organisers deciding to do away with the reserved enclosure area.

Horse Racing Ireland's Michael O'Rourke explained that they wanted to make the racecourse "more egalitarian" and to give the crowds a larger area to move around in.

Is Bono nervous about the new U2 album? You bet

By NIAMH HORAN

Sunday December 28 2008

Bono may have upstaged everyone at the opening of the Leopardstown Racing Festival, but not even the U2 frontman could halt the decline in betting turnover at the famous Christmas meeting.

Fresh from Christmas dinner in Dalkey and his victory over An Taisce, who tried to stop his rooftop extension, Bono was among the first to arrive at the Dublin race meeting.

He was there enjoying a well-earned break after putting the finishing touches to U2's latest album.

"Sure, you're always nervous, but we've gone at it as if it was our first and the critics who have gotten a chance to listen to it already have all said it's the best yet" Bono told me, referring to the album No Line On The Horizon. " We're going after the younger audience this time too," he revealed.

So could he sum up the album in three words for the fans who have yet to get the pleasure? "It's very long," he said with a laugh.

"My favourite song is a song called Moment of Surrender, and the first track is 150 BPM, the fastest song we've ever recorded," he said, beaming with a glint in his eye behind his trademark blue glasses.

Before he left he gave me a gentleman's kiss on the back of my hand.

Over at the bar, ordering hot whiskies, was millionaire property developer Johnny Ronan, who said he had received "about 10 copies" of The Builders as a present this Christmas but hasn't got around to reading the book -- in which he features -- just yet.

Outside in the parade ring, businessman and gambler JP McManus received his prize after his horse pipped Ryanair's Michael O'Leary's nag at the post.

When I enquired how it felt to beat the Ryanair boss by a hair's breadth, he gave me a smile and a very politically correct comment. "It's great to win any race."

O'Leary himself wasn't at the races. He was busy planning his own photo finish against Aer Lingus.

Still in the Leopardstown winners' enclosure, former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds stood joshing with RTE's Colm Murray.

"You taught me everything I know," said the sports commentator.

"You taught a lot of people everything they know. Sure look at Brian Cowen, he wouldn't be where he is today without you, would he?" Another politically correct smile spread over another flushed face.

Also enjoying the day's action was Dublin businessman Charlie Chawke, who said, rather optimistically, that "Sunderland is going to win the league", as he headed off with his son.

But while everybody was in good spirits, the betting ring was feeling the pinch.

The Tote reported a drop of approximately 20 per cent in turnover at the traditional holiday race meetings in Leopardstown and Limerick.

This year, race organisers made the decision to do away with the reserved enclosure area for "equality purposes", according to Horse Racing Ireland's Michael O'Rourke.

And despite all the talk of a downturn, it seems to have paid off, with attendance hitting almost 17,000 -- slightly down on last year.

U2 Break Down 'No Line on the Horizon'
Key tracks from the band's eclectic new album

BRIAN HIATTPosted Jan 22, 2009 9:45 AM

In early December, Rolling Stone traveled to London to visit U2 in the studio as Bono and Co. worked on the upcoming No Line on the Horizon. For the full story, see the new issue, which hits newsstands Wednesday, January 7th. Here's a first listen to 10 of the album's tracks:

"Get On Your Boots"
The likely first single, this blazing, fuzzed-out rocker picks up where "Vertigo" left off. "It started just with me playing and Larry drumming," the Edge recalls. "And we took it from there."

"Stand Up Comedy"
Another hard rock tune, powered by an unexpectedly slinky groove and a riff that lands between the Beatles' "Come Together" and Led Zep's "Heartbreaker." Edge recently hung out with Jimmy Page and Jack White for the upcoming documentary It Might Get Loud, and their penchant for blues-based rock rubbed off: "I was just fascinated with seeing how Jimmy played those riffs so simply, and with Jack as well," he says.

"Crazy Tonight"
"It's kind of like this album's 'Beautiful Day' — it has that kind of joy to it," Bono says. With the refrain "I know I'll go crazy/If I don't go crazy tonight," it's the band's most unabashed pop tune since "Sweetest Thing."

"Unknown Caller"
This midtempo track could have fit on All That You Can't Leave Behind. "The idea is that the narrator is in an altered state, and his phone starts talking to him," says the Edge.

"Tripoli"
This strikingly experimental song lurches between disparate styles, including near-operatic choral music, Zooropa-style electronics, and churning arena rock.

"Cedars of Lebanon"
"On this album, you can feel what is going on in the world at the window, scratching at the windowpane," says Bono, who sings this atmospheric ballad from the point of view of a war correspondent.

"Magnificent"
"Only love can leave such a mark," Bono roars on what sounds like an instant U2 anthem. Will.i.am has already done what Bono calls "the most extraordinary" remix of the tune.

"Moment of Surrender"
This seven-minute-long track is one of the album's most ambitious, merging a Joshua Tree-style gospel feel with a hypnotically loping bass line and a syncopated beat.

"Every Breaking Wave"
A swelling soul-pop song, with bright synth sounds influenced by OMD and, Bono says, "early electronica." "You don't hear indie bands doing blue-eyed soul [like this]," he adds.

"No Line on the Horizon"
The title track's relentless groove began as a group improvisation. "It's very raw and very to the point," says the Edge. "It's like rock & roll 2009."

Inside U2's Bold New 'Horizon'

• U2 Break Down No Line on the Horizon

Even from the bottom of the stairway leading up to the control room, the huge sound leaking out is unmistakable: On this early- December evening in London's Olympic Studios, a new U2 song is being born.

Upstairs, on a green couch at the rear of the room, there's Bono, singing his latest attempt at a lead vocal at the top of his lungs. He rocks back and forth on the couch, as if in epileptic prayer, while he chants the lyrics into a handheld microphone. The words, which he keeps revising, have an almost hip-hop-like cadence: "Stand up, 'cause you can't sit down... Stop helping God across the road like a little old lady... Come on, you people, stand up for your love." The track is powered by a heavy riff that lands between the Beatles' "Come Together" and Led Zep's "Heartbreaker"; the groove is slinkier than anything U2 have done in years.

Bono's hair is cropped into a punky buzz cut. He's wearing jeans, worn brown cowboy boots, a black denim shirt — and even in this dim and private setting, his orange-tinted shades. Surrounding him are his bandmates, who have long since finished their parts: the Edge sits next to Bono, eyes closed, absorbing the music; Larry Mullen Jr. plays the occasional air-drum fill nearby; and Adam Clayton stands in a far corner. "We haven't quite gotten this right, and I'm the problem," Bono says of the tune, which is called "Stand Up Comedy" — at least for the moment. Tomorrow it will have new lyrics.

The new album, No Line on the Horizon (due out March 3rd), mixes some of the loudest and fastest tunes U2 have ever recorded with songs that reclaim the experimental spirit of their Achtung Baby-to-Pop Nineties run. There are pop songs, too, as well as at least one familiarly chiming U2 anthem, "Magnificent." But after two years, U2 still aren't quite finished. "We're at the point where half the album is done, and half the album is in a state where anything can happen — and probably will," says the Edge as he offers a tour of the studio's vast live room, which looks much the same as when the Stones recorded "Sympathy for the Devil" there. In the basement, longtime co-producer Brian Eno is revamping various songs with his laptop, while Steve Lillywhite helms the main board upstairs. The band's other producer, Daniel Lanois, left the day before.

The first single is likely to be "Get On Your Boots," a song that picks up where "Vertigo" left off, with a furry monster of a fuzz-guitar riff; power chords that, per Bono, echo the Damned's "New Rose"; verses that share a rhythm with "Subterranean Homesick Blues"; and a chorus that mixes whimsy and ardor: "Get on your boots/Sexy boots/You don't know how beautiful you are." "A hundred fifty beats per minute, three minutes, the fastest song we've ever played," Bono says, playing the tune at deafening volume in an airy studio lounge after dinner. "We're not really ready for adult-contemporary just yet."

The Edge spent time in the past year hanging out and jamming with Jack White and Jimmy Page for the documentary It Might Get Loud, and something seems to have rubbed off: "He's developing a third testicle, that's what is happening to the Edge," Bono theorizes. "I just hope it's not catching." Some of the songs began as solo GarageBand demos by the Edge, but others developed as full-band improvisations (often sparked by moody loops introduced by Eno) during sessions in Dublin, the South of France and Fez, Morocco — with Eno and Lanois playing keyboards and guitar, respectively.

"We start simple, we get complicated, and then we re-simplify it," says Eno, as he tweaks on his computer what he estimates to be the 80th incarnation of a song called "Breathe." "It's been a longer process, but I think it's compositionally stronger than anything they've done for a long time." That said, Eno is irked that the band has dropped some of the more contemplative and sonically adventurous songs it developed. "Tell them they're being stupid cunts," he jokes, after playing a lovely discarded ballad called "Winter."

Still, there are plenty of unexpected sounds. One concept for the album was a division between "daylight" songs — with organic instruments and arrangements — and "after-dark" songs. On the latter, Bono says, "we allow our interest in electronic music, in Can, Neu! and Kraftwerk, to come out." Among those songs is the title track, which has a churning, tribal groove and a deadpan chorus, and the ambitious possible album opener "Tripoli," which violently lurches between different sections. And then there's the astonishing seven-minute "Moment of Surrender," which merges a Joshua Tree-style gospel feel with a hypnotically loping bass line and a syncopated beat.

"Moment" was played just one time — the band improvised the version on the album from thin air. "This kind of spirit blows through every now and then," Bono says. "It's a very strange feeling. We're waiting for God to walk into the room — and God, it turns out, is very unreliable. So you don't have the right to imagine you can make a great album. But what you can do is create the conditions where it might happen."

We received a couple emails alerting us to a conversation Bono and Adam reportedly had Thursday night in Dublin with fans outside the band's studio. Bono apparently told the fans two pieces of news worth passing along:

* The new single will be released to radio on January 19 (see below, too).
* The tour will begin in Spain before the end of June.

NEW @U2 NEW SINGLE COMING SOON
January 07, 2009
posted by: m2

We're hearing lots of buzz about the first single from U2's new album, which is expected to be "Get On Your Boots." Confirming anything has been a challenge today, but here's what we think we know:

* A fan in Boston tell us that WBCN radio announced on-air yesterday that the new U2 single will "hit the airwaves" next week. WBCN is, of course, a longtime U2-friendly radio station.
* But, a good source elsewhere is saying the single won't be on US radio until January 19.

We do know that U.S. radio stations typically receive new singles on Thursdays or Fridays for airing the following week. So, it sounds like the new single should be out in the next week or two at most. We've got feelers out in a bunch of places, and we'll update this as we hear more.

On a semi-related note, U2tour.de is reporting that the UK standard version of No Line On The Horizon will include a bonus track. The U.K. and Japan typically get these bonus tracks. U2tour.de also expects the bonus track will be available on some of the limited editions of the album, too.

"Get On Your Boots” – A First Listen
Sunday, January 11, 2009

"Got it. 3pm?"

That was all, Paul, the record rep from Universal and fellow U2 fan, had to say. A highly-encrypted, heavily watermarked digital copy of the first single from No Line on the Horizon had arrived in Canada.

For the last 20-plus years, a first listen to anything from a U2 album has always been surrounded by much ritual and security. The first place I got to hear The Joshua Tree in 1987 was at the now defunct McLaughlin Planetarium in Toronto.

As the opening drone of “Where the Streets Have No Name Swelled,” the lights went down and the stars came out. When the Edge’s guitar began to chime, the whole sky started to rotate. It was a spectacular introduction to what would become a career-defining introduction.

Achtung Baby was a more low-key affair with a record company representative came in and played it for everyone—but not before we are treated to pizza and beer. “The Fly” kind of confused us at first.

This was the same band that gave us The Joshua Tree? What’s with all these new sounds? It took a little while to get used to this version of U2, but now many (including me) believe that Achtung remains the band’s best record.

Zooropa arrived with no notice whatsoever. It just…showed up on day in May 1993. Bands and labels could pull those kinds of surprises before the Internet. Funny that I can’t remember the first single. I think it was “Numb,” but I’m not sure.

The unveiling of Pop was a much bigger deal with a satellite-delivered press conference from (of all places) a K-Mart in NYC. But all the hype couldn’t convince us that “Discotheque” was what all had been waiting for.

U2 fans hoped that there’d be something better on the album. There wasn’t. At least the PopMart tour was interesting.

Just after Labour Day 2000, Paul brought in “Beautiful Day” from All That You Can’t Leave Behind on a CD-R, something that was still kind of new. I remember being relieved that U2 had decided to sound like U2 again.

I didn’t like “Vertigo” the first time I heard it. It was late August 2004 and Paul brought the CD-R to an industry golf tournament. He made me wait all eighteen holes before we sat in my car and listened to the song four times in a row.

It took another month before I began to get it. It’s now one of my three all-time U2 favourites (for the record, the other two are “Zoo Station” from Achtung Baby and the live version of “Bad” from Wide Awake in America. The long version of “All I Want Is You” and “40” aren’t bad, either.)

Now it was time to hear where the band was going in Year 33 (!!!) of their career.

Paul showed up in the office holding an unassuming, unlabeled CD-R at 3:01. By 3:04, we had all heard the first sample of U2 v2009.

I only got to hear “Get On Your Boots” (NOT “Sexy Boots” or “Get Your Boots On,” as reported earlier) so forgive the lack of detail. But here’s what I can tell you:

There are some new sounds that could only come from an Eno/Lanois production, which left me with a feeling similar to what I experienced when I heard “The Fly” for the first time.

This is NOT a back-to-basics guitar/bass/drums track like “Vertigo” or even “Beautiful Day.” There’s some definite sonic evolution going on here.

It does rock. To find the last time a first single was a ballad, you have to go all the way back to “With Or Without You.” That worked out all right, but I can’t imagine U2 doing that again in the prevailing musical environment.

Bono manages to rhyme “submarine” with “gasoline” and says something about “don’t talk to me about the state of nations.”

There’s a portion of the melody that somehow reminds me of the cadence of the verses in Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up,” but as I write this, I’m not completely sure. Still, part of the song reminded me of…something else.

Did I like it? I didn’t hate it—but I need to hear it more before I really make up my mind about what I think about….anything to do with the song.

Like so many U2 songs—especially ones produced by an Eno/Lanois/Lilywhite nexus—it’s filled with far more subtleties and complexities that anyone can hear with one listen. I need to examine it, ponder upon it and otherwise live with it.

But that’s the cool thing about U2. There’s just so much THERE there that it can take a while to sort through it all. Suffice it to say, however, that if you’re a U2 fan, you’ll be pleased.

If the song isn’t on the radio by the end of this week, I’ll be shocked. I first heard bits of “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” from a broadcast on a Croatian radio station. There was a leak at the record pressing plant and somehow this dude got himself a big scoop.

Tomorrow, I’ll tell you why that was a dumb, dumb move.

I found myself in a situation very much like Alan Cross this morning, so I composed my thoughts for The Blue Crackheads after hearing the song twice.

God bless 'em, it opens with a drum fill, not unlike "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn & John, and then we're on our way. The signature riff is muscular and catchy in the "Vertigo" vein, with a rapid fire vocal pattern. I read a Alan Cross' blog this morning that compared the verses to "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello, and I can't say I disagree with that. It's evocative but I wouldn't call it a rip-off. The chorus goes all middle eastern with Bono singing "You don't know how beautiful you are". There's a half-tempo breakdown/bridge with a processed drum loop that I cannot wait to hear in a stadium. It's like John Bonham playing on a Massive Attack song before the song lurches back into the main riff for another verse and chorus. And then before you know it, it's all over. It feels like a dense 7 minute epic crammed into about 3 and a half minutes.

The single most striking thing about this song for me are the drums. Or at least I think they're drums! I've never heard so many layers of rhythm on a U2 song. There are a lot of very processed drums (I thought of Kasabian at one point and N*E*R*D* at another) and loops going on, coming in and out of the mix and then at points it goes back to traditional sounding drums for emphasis. It's extremely tasteful, but complex enough to make my head spin. And I have no idea how I'm gonna manage to pull it off when my band learns it, so stay tuned for some comedy while I work that business out.

Anyway, this is NOT U2 by the numbers. This is not a "return to form" or "back to basics". This is, what the kids like to call, some OTHER shit. The 21st Century version of U2 is finally here. And they aren't looking back to their own catalog for inspiration anymore if this song is any indication.

U2's new single to be played at Brit Awards
RONAN McGREEVY

U2 ARE to debut their new single Get On Your Boots next month at the Brit Awards, the first time they will play the song live to an audience.

The show at Earls Court in London takes place on February 18th, 11 days before the release of the band’s much anticipated new album No Line On The Horizon, their first since the 2004 release of How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

Ged Doherty, chairman of the Brits committee, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to confirm that U2 have chosen the Brits for their first global TV performance of their new album. Their addition to the line-up for this year’s show makes it possibly the best we have ever had.”

The single has been kept under wraps to date, although one fan managed to record several tracks from the new album using his mobile phone when Bono played them too loudly from his beachside home in the village of Eze-sur-Mere, near Nice, during the summer. The songs were placed on the video-sharing website You Tube, but were quickly taken down. Nevertheless, some enterprising fans have recreated the guitar lick for the new single and posted it on the website.

Rolling Stone magazine, which has heard the new album, said Get On Your Boots was a “blazing, fuzzed-out rocker [which] picks up where [a previous single] Vertigo left off”.

No Line On The Horizon has been in gestation for two years. Earlier sessions with Rick Rubin, the man known as a super-producer for his work with Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers among others, were scrapped and the band teamed up with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, who have worked on some of U2’s most successful albums in the past.

Here are the official lyrics:

GET ON YOUR BOOTS

The future needs a big kiss
Winds blows with a twist
Never seen a moon like this
Can you see it too?

Night is falling everywhere
Rockets at the fun fair
Satan loves a bomb scare
But he won’t scare you

Hey, sexy boots
Get on your boots, yeah

You free me from the dark dream
Candy floss ice cream
All our kids are screaming
But the ghosts aren’t real

Here’s where we gotta be
Love and community
Laughter is eternity
If joy is real

You don’t know how beautiful
You don’t know how beautiful you are
You don’t know, and you don’t get it, do you?
You don’t know how beautiful you are

That’s someone’s stuff they’re blowing up
We’re into growing up
Women of the future
Hold the big revelations

I got a submarine
You got gasoline
I don’t want to talk about wars between nations

Not right now

Hey sexy boots...
Get on your boots, yeah
Not right now
Bossy boots

You don’t know how beautiful
You don’t know how beautiful you are
You don’t know, and you don’t get it, do you?
You don’t know how beautiful you are

Hey sexy boots
I don’t want to talk about the wars between the nations
Sexy boots, yeah

Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound, sound
Let me in the sound, sound
Meet me in the sound

Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound, now
God, I’m going down
I don’t wanna drown now
Meet me in the sound

Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound, sound
Let me in the sound, sound
Meet me in the sound

Get on your boots
Get on your boots
Get on your boots
Yeah hey hey

Ireland leads the way with new U2 album

U2's new single 'Get On Your Boots' has shot straight to No.1 in the Irish airplay charts.

The single – the first from the band's hugely anticipated No Line On The Horizon album – has already been greeted with widespread critical acclaim, significantly raising expectations for what is destined to be one of the year's big records. Originally titled 'Sexy Boots' the track is a thoroughly contemporary, intense electro grunge exercise, with Adam Clayton's powerful bass to the fore, which mixes hip hop influences with shades of the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

"We came up with 'Sexy Boots', and everyone got very excited by the idea and we pursued it, but in the end we just thought it was a bit limiting, and so we took it in another direction. That's the way it often happens with U2," Edge told Hot Press. Edge also waxed lyrical about the video for the single, made by French director Alex Courtes, who was also responsible for the video for 'City Of Blinding Lights'. "It's based around the idea that men have fucked things up so badly, politically, economically and socially that it's really time we handed things over to women. We had our doubts when we saw a rough cut – but the finished video is brilliant. He's really nailed it."

Officially due for release as a digital download on February 15, the track was made available on iTunes on the same day as Dave Fanning gave it its worldwide premiere on the Colm and Jim Jim Show on 2fm.

"'Get On Your Boots' is a great opening salvo from what is a brilliant album," Hot Press editor Niall Stokes commented. "No Line On The Horizon is a huge record, full of big songs, powerful riffs and superb musicianship. It's more musically diverse that any U2 album since Rattle And Hum, mixing hard rock, psychedelia, pop, electronica, dance, folk, country, spiritual music and orchestral shadings in what is a fantastically heady brew. It will certainly challenge U2 fans, but my guess is that they'll ultimately be inspired. It's going to be a massive record. I can't wait to hear the songs live."

The single has also won the approval of radio in the UK, where it is currently at No.6 on the airplay charts. No Line On The Horizon is released on February 27 in Ireland and March 3 in the US.

The new U2 album: track by track - Music - Independent.ie

Thursday January 29 2009

The first U2 album since November 2004 received an exclusive first play in Dublin last night.

The Residence private members club on St Stephen's Green in Dublin hosted a playback of the eagerly awaited album.

It has been the longest gap between releases in the band's entire career.

Media and record company personnel gathered to hear 'No Line on the Horizon' in full in the club's luxurious surroundings. The quartet's 12th studio album will be released in Ireland on February 27, a full weekend before its worldwide release.

Sessions for the album were recorded in Fez, Morocco, before moving on to the band's Dublin studio on Hanover Quay, New York's Platinum Sound and Olympic Studios in London.

The album will be available in five different formats, including vinyl, standard CD, a deluxe box set and a special edition with a limited 64-page magazine.

The lead single 'Get On Your Boots' will be available both as a digital download and on physical formats from February 13. The download, CD and 7in vinyl will all be priced at 99 cent, a first for a single release in this country.

The accompanying video for 'Get On Your Boots' will receive its world premiere exclusively here on Irish Independent News in Ireland & Worldwide | Irish Newspaper | News Stories Online?-?Independent.ie tomorrow at 4.55pm.

1 'No Line on the Horizon'

The opening title track kicks off with a crunchy, distorted guitar riff from the Edge.

2 'Magnificent'

Dancey electro flourishes introduce an atmospheric track with moody leanings.

3 'Moment of Surrender'

This particular moment of surrender sees a slowing down of the tempo and some delicate, bluesy guitar playing from the Edge.

4 'Unknown Caller'

More intricate guitar fretwork that builds into a mid-tempo rocker featuring an organ and one of the album's lushest productions.

5 'I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight'

Chiming guitar intro, a rousing Bono falsetto and the lyric, "Every generation has a chance to change the world".

6 'Get On Your Boots'

The belting single that shot straight to the top of the Irish airplay charts here stands as the halfway tune. The video will be premiered tomorrow on Irish Independent News in Ireland & Worldwide | Irish Newspaper | News Stories Online?-?Independent.ie from 4.55pm.

7 'Stand Up Comedy'

Grungy pop with strident drumming from Larry Mullen.

8 'Fez -- Being Born'

On first listen, easily the album's most adventurous and challenging track with ambient synthy hooks.

9 'White as Snow'

A stark, stripped back and striking tune with imploring vocals.

10 'Breathe'

Starts off with a trip-hop beat and cello playing before transforming into an all-out rocker.

11 'Cedars of Lebanon'

A reflective parting glass for album number 12, finishing on the line, "Choose your enemies carefully because they will define you".

Björn had the opportunity under a Prelistening session for the first time the new U2 album 'No Line On The Horizon' to hear. The whole took place - as it belongs - in the legendary Hansa studios in Berlin. His first impressions are here to read - lots of fun!

To put it quite clearly anticipated to take: I have the songs of the new record belongs exactly two times, that's too little to a review of "New Line On The Horizon" to write, which of these highly complex plate only rudimentary needs. Hence sketch the following lines just my first impressions: it is explicitly not a definitive review and therefore neither the individual nor the whole song a rating plate.

I have the CD as part of an organized Universal Music Pre-listening to the legendary Hansa studios belongs. That alone is a clear statement. Finally, the Hansa studios the place where baby was respect. But - that I venture even after listening twice to say - this panel will meet this demand. This album is different, this record is a brave one - and this record is definitely The Edge "on fire".

The overview of the individual songs:

- NLOTH

is a clear statement for the new direction, heavy guitars, a slow sectionin the middle, atmospheric and dense, a lot of different vocal parts

- Magnificient

Beach Clip 4, loud drumms, loops and riffs in the beginning, you can hear Bono singing "Magnificent" first (yes! it's also in bc4), very melodic, one of the best songs on the album, but also very close to "classic" U2. Many layers, very strong ending.

- Moment of Surrender

One of the slowest songs on the album, very strongly influenced by the Fez-sessions, strings, keyboards, sounds a little like Passengers, Bono sings with a scratchy voice first, than very melodic, many sound layers, Edge has an expressive, but slow guitar solo, the song has an oh oh oh chorus.

- Unknown Caller

Known as Beach Clip 1: Birds chirping, electronic noises, keyboards in the beginning, a mixture of classic and more "broken" sounds, sung with two voices (don't know if it means only Bono or Bono and Edge). Chorus: "Restart and reboot yourself" and: "I was lost between the midnight and the dawning". Edge has a very strong guitar solo, Bono singing over calm keyboard sounds. Lyrics: "Escape yourself and gravity"

-I'll go crazy if I don`t go crazy tonight

It's one of the shorter songs on the album, carried by Larry's strong drumming, but also interrupted by calm sequences. Resembles SYCMIOYO in some parts, the end is very similar to Ultraviolet. Political lyrics, Bono sings: "There's a part of me that wants to riot" and, later: "Every generation get's a chance to change the world". Would be a good second or third single.

- Get on your boots

First single, placed perfectly on the album, more light-hearted after all the dense and complex songs.

- Stand up comedy

Clearly influenced by Edge's sessions with Jack White and Jimmi Page. Sounds very 70s and would fit on the "Across the universe" soundtrack. Very rocking, catchy, Edge is "on fire", sounds like a single.

- Fez – being born

First you only hear a collage of electronic noises like phone ringing, a sample of GOYB, then, after about a minute, the song starts. Classic Edge guitar, keyboards, Bono singing very restlessly first, then more melodic. Fast beats. U2 sounding raw like during their very early years. In the middle the song sounds more synthetic and reminds the listener of Depeche Mode. Strong guitar and not so much singing.

- White as snow

Very calm song, short. Begins with atmospheric electronic sounds, then accoustic guitar, Bono sings like Johnny Cash, very intensive vocals. The song is about forgiving and about estranged brothers. Sounds a bit like Springhill Mining Disaster.

- Breathe

Beach Clip 2. Loud drums in the beginning, Bono's muffled singing, the chorus sounds like classic U2. Strings, but always broken by Edge's guitar. Intense and complex sound, a little bit like UTEOTW.

- Cedars of Lebanon

Dark song. Keyboards, minimalistic guitar parts, Bono talks more than he sings, is very dominant on the track. Strong bass line, sounds a bit like "Velvet Dress". Bono takes the perspective of a war correspondent in Lebanon. Edge sings the repeated part: "Return the call to home".

-----------------------------------------------

One of major newspapers here in Finland called Iltasanomat had track by track review of the album in today's printed version.

Article says...
- the album is going to take the band into new direction
- artful but catchy
- sounds and arrangments are experimental
- Edge's guitar is mixed front in many songs
- Moment of Surrender, Magnificent and White as Snow are going to be future classics

...about the songs...

No Line On The Horizon
- really rough sound, but not heavy like metal music

Magnificent
- sounds great from very first listen
- keeps up the energy level after NLOTH
- going to be 3rd single release from the album (!!??)

Moment
- perhaps the most important song on the album
- going to be great in concert
- slower than the first two songs but passion makes it up
- Bono's singing is great
- soundscape reminds UF era

Unknown Caller
- long intro
- Edge's playing is "bold"

Crazy Tonight
- fast song

Get On Your Boots
- one of the most challenging tracks on the album

Stand Up Comedy
- another fast song
- good guitar riff
- sounds are from AB-era

Fez - Being born
- African influences can be heard clearly on this one

White As Snow
- new 'One'?
- beautiful track

Breathe
- pompous song that reaches in for many directions

Article doesn't mention anything about Cedars.

------------------------------------------------------------

France invited by Universal, we were able to listen on Friday for the first time the new U2 album. First impressions ...

A small room, a few seats, mostly journalists, the stage is set. It leaves everything to entry, bag, laptops, coats, no question of allowing anyone to record what will be released. A notebook, a pencil, and the first notes of "No Line On The Horizon" which resound. And what footnotes!

It starts strong
The album opens with what will probably be the title U2 2009, No Line On The Horizon is a great rock song, heavy, unusually fast for U2, whose sounds and vocals are reminiscent in many respects to more titles rhythmic Kings Of Leon. The chorus, very short and very quiet, allows impressive change of pace typical of U2. This title will undoubtedly be a must on the tour, and could even see the opening song of any designated.

Magnificent continue the momentum "rock" of the previous title, with the help of electronic sounds that seem straight from all the Passengers. The intro to slowly take us back to a pace intense. The chorus is again a break with no real melody, a chorus plan based on the voice of Bono and a discreet presence of The Edge on guitar. The title alone represents the entire album: a mix of rock and planants moments, revealing sparingly multiple electronic sounds.

It will be quiet ...
After two titles very rhythmic, U2 opens a triptych lighter. Moment Of Surrender is the designated ride any of the album. Every album the group is trying to find a successor worthy of the name to One and Stay, with varying degrees of success. This time may be good, Moment Of Surrender happens to provoke emotion, through the tortured vocals of Bono, and a beautiful vocal chorus. The Edge offers a remarkable solo air sound may remind some of Pink Floyd.

Unknown Caller begins with chirping birds. The time of the intro, it thinks in a garden beside a river and we Bono sussure "Sunshine, sunshine" in his ear. It's fresh. The rest of the title is a journey, combining a big guitar and a chorus almost spoken. " The end to The Edge allows us to fill a new and long guitar solos, to lead us slowly under the pop album: Crazy Tonight. Light, leading, and refreshing, this title takes the torch from Wild Honey but no other comparison as it is higher. Bono sings "Baby, baby" and takes us back to the days of Achtung Baby. The catchy chorus will easily in the mind.

... To spread
Get On Your Boots concludes pause "pop / walks and back where it began: the rock. Taking this as everyone knows now, and interested us following Stand Up Comedy, which is his natural brother. It is an extension clear: even typical guitar riff, even the heavy, even how to sing just "spoken" Bono. Throughout the song, it really become as a result of Get On Your Boots.

Fez - Being Born surprises. More than a title, it's almost two titles butt: Fez on one side (intro) and being born on the other. Plan, the intro seems straight out of the album Zooropa and contains sounds like "zapping radio, it surprised by the resumption of" Let me in the sound "Get On Your Boots. Following the song starts abruptly. Halfway between the ride and the rock under the title slip pleasantly, without any real structure.

Controlled landing
The album landed slowly. As Snow White and Breathe are two titles of classic U2. The first starts slowly as did The Ground Beneath Her Feet at the time. The guitar of The Edge is like a stroll written by a group of hard-rock. As a breath, it starts with an introduction by Larry Mullen messy, and leave quickly up to the inspiration of The Edge, whose guitar innonde the pieces, which still provides us a solo final.

Cedars Of Lebanon happens then, as the UFO of the album, just as were The Wanderer on Zooropa or Wake Up Dead Man on Pop. The title is built around Bono who speaks more than he sings, with music very slow tempo that closes an album perfectly exciting.

Conclusion
Exciting is the word that might best describe the album. Let us be clear, if you expect a classic U2 of the 2000s, you'll be disappointed. Same thing if you think back to U2 and resume 90 years after Achtung Baby. No "No Line On The Horizon" is unlike anything U2 has done so far. But that does not stop it from being simply enormous. This is an album dense, heavy, offering the bribes of a U2 rock that had perhaps never proposed, while retaining the key that is so specific. It is surprising to many times to hear sounds that remind us Zooropa and Passengers, but this disc is a new material, in many ways unique to the previous ones.

Get on Your Boots is a good overview, but not the top. And we like to tell you all at once: the first part of the album is a real slap!

The video for Get On Your Boots is something else... and it'll be premiered on U2.Com today.

French film maker and artist Courtes also directed (with former creative partner Martin Fougeral) the Grammy winning video for “Vertigo” and the video for “City of Blinding Lights”.

“Get On Your Boots” is the first single from the band's 12th studio album No Line On The Horizon, out 2nd March 2009.

Chris Evans says: "When it comes to rock n roll it doesn't get any bigger than U2, and when the biggest are getting better, backed up by the sheer brilliance of their new album, it will only be a pure joy to have them as part of our little radio show for one night only."
