if someone buttheads ; VERB you that fiercely after a comment, then in retrospect, the comment made is absolutely justified

Used as a NOUN, it's headbutt.
But used as a VERB, I think you switch the words around.

You're butting your head.
Not heading your butt!

Just realized:

You're butting your head : you're headbutting (not buttheading).
You butt your head : you headbutt (and not butthead) .
She/he butts his head : he headbutts (and not buttheads).

Yeah, that makes sense.

A simple google search shows:

buttheading - 147 results
headbutting - 311000 results

OK, I'm gonna change my answer as to why to this then:

The word "Butthead" is stored somewhere in my memory.
It sounds familiar.
Where "Headbutt" is a new word to me.
Not stored yet.
Now if I react to something immediately (without giving it too much thought), I use what is familiar ("butthead")
Even though that's wrong.

why not to say headBULLED? that would make much more sense isn't it?
to me there is a misunderstanding...
the original word was headbulled, act like a bull but using your head instead of the horns...but it was bad spelled ad so the word soon become headbutted...
think about it...what does head butt would actually means?? it's just an offence, nothing else....

Fifa opens Materazzi inquiry

13/07/2006: Fifa have opened disciplinary proceedings against Italy defender Marco Materazzi following the incident that led to France captain Zinedine Zidane being sent off in Sunday's World Cup final.

Fifa is responding following Zidane's interview with Canal Plus last night in which he accused Materazzi of insulting his mother and sister during the game.

Zidane, playing in his final game before retirement, headbutted Materazzi in the chest and was shown a red card.

Fifa had already announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Zidane has been invited to provide a written statement by July 18.th

Materazzi will then be given a chance to respond before both players are called to a face-to-face hearing of the disciplinary committee in Zurich on July 20th.
