Wow! The song explodes out of your speakers immediately...loud drums great guitar def like it cant wait for 3 March

I burned this shit to a CD and rocked out my fucking town...speakers full volume...windows down at 11 degrees out...totally worth it. I can drive to this shit!!!

It doesn't remind you of Vertigo and Fast Cars?

It reminds of Vertigo for obvious reasons: the main riff, while not in the same key or pattern, has the same kind of vibe. The fact that Vertigo was the first single from the last album only reminds me more.
Also, as has been noted, Bono's rap/sing during the verses.

The eastern chorus (which is cool) reminds me of Fast cars for the same chord progression.

Look, in all seriousness, I can't judge the rest of the album by this tune, the same way Vertigo had almost nothing to do with the rest of Bomb.
I am holding out sincere hope for it...Magnificent at least should be great.

Debut on Satellite Radio?

Does anyone know how long songs usually take to premiere on Satellite radio (i.e. Sirius XM) after their premieres on FM radio?

I think the song doesn't sound anything like the previous two albums. And i was expecting a new sound. It sounds fresh enough. But in my opinion it's not that brilliant. So regardless if it's experimental or diferent i think it lacks a stronger chorus and a better ending to it. It's not crap but nowhere near one of their best efforts.

i wonder what will be different about the album version? isnt it normal that the 2 versions are a little different?

So you keep saying.

middle eastern vibe is cool when edge and bono harmonize.........sounds really good

I agree it lacks a strong chorus, I think the "you don't know..." part could have made for a strong chorus.

But in a way I'm kinda glad they didn't go for the obvious chorus...

Remember their best efforts are 6 to 7 mins long. Radio likes a good 3 1/2 minute song. Look at Led Zeppelin. What kind of hits did they have compared to the awesome long songs on the album?

I like the loose high hat in the beginning. Very retro. I can see why they were listening to other drummers (Mitch Mitchell is notorious for this).

Usually Larry uses toms instead of high hats which make his splashes and crashes all the more dramatic.

I like his Bonham twist in this as well.

the song is very rich.

Lots going on in the background.

The "you don't know..." part is predominantly Edge but the melody and harmony arrangement are pure ENO.

Bono in the last few years has incorporated alot of middle eastern vibe/melodies in live shows. It's nice to see it make it's way into his creative palette.

It's good and it's ambitious. It's going to compete on pop radio very nicely and it has musical substance.

Beautifully done.

i must say im quite suprised. And i hope the rest of the album also contains this kind of layers and complexity. Its new to u2 and thats what most of us wanted? So its a winner i think, maybe a bit overproduced but i can live with that!

I guess as a musician you always want to hear things the way you hear them in your head and having listened to U2 since the mid/late eighties with my first live show being JT in '87 my head sounds like this.
Eight Days Later Music
Would love to know what all of you think as well... so it that goes in another thread let me know where or please start one...
from the guy playing in the sandbox with his keys..

I like the music and production on these tracks so far, but I don't care for the vocals. The melodies aren't amazingly awesome either.

 I just got it and listened about...4 times in my wee cubicle and I'm gonna say I LOVE IT! It's gonna be AWESOME live. WOOT!

Can anyone explain what the words "Sexy Boots" have anything to do with the lyrics?

Is it that Bono wants to put away humanitarian efforts for a minute and go shopping at the mall?

If I had to place this single, I'd say it sounds like a much-better produced POP track, which is a good thing. I've always considered POP a near-miss. If Lanois and Eno had produced POP, this is how it would've sounded.

The song is multi-layered with crisp percussion piercing deeply distorted riff (I thought Flood buried the percussions on POP too deep in the mix). The backing vocals are perfect and Bono sounds young and vibrant.

The melody is challenging enough not to be too quickly enjoyed and discarded.

After five listens, I am very optimistic for the new album and I think this song will sound great live.

I agree, it carries both songs' flavours throughout. But I don't think that means something bad. I could say it's an evolution of both. The sonic details are also superior on Boots. I think it'll fit like a glove (or a boot!) for live gigs. Plus the combo guitar-bass-drums are so well produced and crispy here that my heart aches!
