Setlist Discussion Part II - Spoilers Allowed, Enter At Your Own Risk

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Counterpoint - they shouldn't.
If Larry can work in the studio but can’t hold up for a few dozen dates of a world tour - or just doesn’t want to tour after this next big one - I’m fine with the notion of a touring drummer.

The key to me is Larry remaining a creative member of the band, and the drummer of the recorded work. Then those songs are U2 songs.

I think if there was a realistic chance of that, he wouldn't have been on Atomic City. He's got all this year to get back to tour shape if, as Adam said, they want to tour in 2025. I think what Sphere has proven is that if for some reason Larry can't do it then Bram will fit in just fine, but it's hard to imagine the plan right now isn't for Larry to play.

I appreciated Bono's comments because they were measured and informed and didn't try and flatten almost unthinkable complexity. He also made Drudge Report, but for the "shut up" comment.

I just want to enjoy U2 without them having to solve all the world's problems. Every single thing doesn't have to be about every single thing. It's okay.

Does everything we all love how to be affected by politics and war and hate?

Even porn has been ruined by AI.
I enjoyed the two shows I saw with my entire whole heart and soul, they were incredible. And, I was really disappointed by the lack of commentary on Palestine. The band has always stood against this kind of injustice, but to me seem either cowed by fear of being labelled anti-Semitic, or they're just genuinely centrist now, and part of being centrist is ignoring the most sickening genocide in my lifetime, or pretending it's a 50-50.

I read an article about Taylor Swift being so popular because she is steadfastly against declaring a position on anything. I hope they aren’t following the blueprint of being politically milquetoast to curry favour with bigots, ignorants and douchebags.

I saw someone comment something along the lines of 'the band has always been on the side of the victims', and I think that's right. It's not about '50-50'ing it, but saying violence is immoral. The "shut up" came when people started cheering at the mention of Palestine, and I think it was because he wanted to make sure people heard him out and didn't just stop at that point or think he was cheerleading a cause/side. It seemed to work.

The thing is we all have thoughts on this... we don't always agree... it's very complex... the world will never agree fully... I feel one way due to my background and you may feel another, but we all agree...

U2 SHOULD KEEP TOURING WITH BRAM OR A DRUM KIT LET'S GO!!!!

Now we disagree are they allowed to record new music w/o Larry as U2... I assume his arms can work eventually!

Why wouldn't you post something in FYM? I'm sure people will engage with you.

Agree. If anything, give Bram the job and maybe he can light a rocket under their arse.

i am not opposed to this.

my preferred route - if larry is going to have continued health issues and/or just doesn't have it in him anymore - would be for Larry to work in studio and Bram to continue to be the live drummer.

if Larry truly just wants out - i'd have zero issues with the band continuing on with Bram as the full time drummer.

any number of acts have replaced original members over the years. yes - U2 were unique in that they had the same four for so long, so it would be a change - but i'd rather they continue on with a replacement than to just fold and go away.

if larry only needed time and is good to go soon then obviously the entire discussion is moot.

If Larry really was out we’d have had a new album for the sphere and a full tour for 2024. There were multiple rumours that the Sphere residency would be augmented by stadium shows in between, and Larry’s health situation made it impossible. They are waiting for him to get better.

In the hypothetical situation where he doesn’t get well enough to play, they 100% should continue with Bram and I think Larry would make a statement giving the situation his blessing. People really ascribe too much meaning to his cranky demeanour.

^ Exactly, Dan.

He wouldn't have come to the US to record and make a video of a single if he didn't fully intend to rejoin the band as soon as he can.

Bono scolded him twice for a hiccup during Mys Ways Sunday night. I felt a little sorry for him. He does such a great job.

Touche. Bono was in a surly mood on Sunday. Aside from the Bram thing, they were late coming on then at one point he alluded to their hangovers from Sat. That probably contributed to the "Peace on Earth" bit. Guessing they were getting that together before the show. It was good BTW. Felt more like a U2 show than a Vegas show band going thru the motions.

I'm in the "it'll all be fine and things will be back to normal camp", but I'm guessing that the plan was he'd be recovered by the end of the Sphere run so they could get the new album recorded and hit the road.Hearing he needed more surgery was a bit of a surprise - as was the apparent toll of recording one song.

But if he was going to quit due to health or for any reasons, he'd have just done it by now.

So everything will be back to normal soon. Or soon-ish. Which is very U2 in itself.

i suspect that the issue could be that he WANTS to keep going, but doesn't know if he can - which leaves a bit of uncertainty going forward.

i still don't rule out a return to Sphere in the fall. perhaps it's wishful thinking on my part - especially as i'm planning to return to Vegas in the fall regardless lol.

but there's nothing scheduled past Dead and Co in the summer - and we've know for a while that the band had a 2 year option. i wouldn't put money on it - but i also wouldn't completely rule it out, especially if Larry's return is further delayed and/or permanently put on hold.

That would explain why we've ended up here - it's a common thing in professional sports where older players in particular sometimes take a while to realise they just can't go on. Which leads to lots of false starts before finally retiring when its obvious they can't perform at the level they used to be able to do.

I'd just be fascinated to know what the story is. They're not getting any younger and clearly still want to record new music and tour, but we're coming up for 5 and half years since the end of the last tour and over 6 years since the last album. I know Bono in particular has been very active in that time, but it must be a strange position to be in, especially with how much time they've been putting into "songwriting".

I'd be all for another trip to Vegas to see them and Bram. I wonder if it would be a Greatest Hits style thing or they pick another album to play in full.

I would hope they’d lean on full album or theme weekends (80s/90s/00s) and hold off on a Greatest Hits tour until it’s time to say goodbye.
