Here we go again. Will they go “rawk” as some of you put it or will they go “experimental”.
Expect more of the same folks.
The only surprise we’re in for is if they decide to drop something earlier right in time for Trump’s re-election.
Whether or not he'd be willing to put up with their habits is another question.
Danger Mouse spent a long time with them, letting them follow their instincts, and what did they do? Gave over half the album to Tedder and Epworth to slick up and water down.
So even if a producer is willing to let U2 be U2, they'll wind up fucking them over anyway and ruining some of the tracks.
Albums with the Danger Mouse types.
Non-album singles with pop producers.
Easy.
They are in their 60s now. I would be very happy with the last album( I mean it’s getting more likely) being produced by Eno and Lanois. No other producers have brought out of the band what they have. They just need to get the “hit singles” mentality out of their system.
Don’t assume Eno and Lanois would work with them again. There was a fallout of sorts over songwriting credits for NLOTH.
Would anyone else like to see a different visual aesthetic than Corbijn pictures for the next album? I'm more than fine with not seeing any more pictures of U2 in stark black-and-white. SOI had the most interesting U2 album artwork in decades just for having some blue in there.
I can't imagine they're still feuding about that sticking point (god knows what part McGuinness played in it), but the other question is whether or not Eno and/or Lanois would want to put in the required time to produce a U2 album.
Of course, Eno could always pull his "occasionally review and advise" method where he's not there all the time.
If their rough plan is one more album with Tedder than they're idiotsIf the rough plan is one more rock/pop Tedder album in 2022-2023, then another break, and then a "final" record that may or may not be Songs Of Ascent, keep in mind that Eno is 72 and Lanois is 68. Waiting eight more years for that final record with their old producers may not be feasible since they're already "old" producers.
