Grammy Nominations 12-02-09

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I'm laughing so hard right now. :lmao:

They picked CRAZY TONIGHT as best rock song by U2? Epic Grammy fail as usual.

Not that I don't still love Crazy... it's just... uh... not a rock song? Pop ftw.

yeah, I was wondering the same thing when I read that. Maybe they did get Crazy  See what I did there? :D

This is what the Los Angeles Times wrote:

Grammy voters have backed themselves into a corner with U2. The act's 2009 release, "No Line on the Horizon," kind of has to be nominated for album of the year. Voters regularly nominate U2 in the field -- the act won for 1987's "The Joshua Tree" and 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" -- and U2's prior two releases were Grammy darlings. Though it didn't win, 2000's "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was also nominated for the top prize. Both "Atomic Bomb" and "Leave Behind" spawned plenty of hits and sold into the millions, and both lacked the atmosphere, the grace and the experimental tendencies of "No Line on the Horizon." The latter hasn't spawned a blockbuster such as "Beautiful Day," and it hasn't sold at the pace of U2's recent releases either. It is, however, an artistic triumph. If Grammy voters pass it up, it reinforces the notion of the gala being little more than a popularity contest.

couldn't agree more...

 yes because the rolling stones had one of the biggest selling albums of the year when they last released an album, oh no wait they didnt.

In other words same old same old from you.

A Bigger Bang went #1 on the world charts, sold an estimated 3.5 million copies to date, and rated a questionable 4.5 stars by RS magazine, and the Rolling Stones went on to set boxoffice records with the subsequent tour. Sounds familiar?

3.5m in a time before record sales had plunged as far as they had, NLOTH @ 5 Stars, and 360 heavily features songs from NLOTH... not really comparable.

Not really. Is this the same A Bigger Bang album the Stones would play 1 or 2 songs from live during the self titled tour. A Bigger Bang was a joke of an album. I'm a huge Stones fan, but since Mick & Keith have separate agendas the Stones don't give a damn about new music. All they care about is the box office $$$$.

Don't forget Bigger Bang came out in 2005/2006 and selling 3.5 million worldwide at that time isn't much. U2's HTDAAB sold more than twice that & NLOTH is in the top 3 for worldwide sales.

Just looking at the "Best Album" nominees makes me want to throw-up. This is just a popularity contest that promotes artist who can move units for a hurting industry (record sales). I'm not saying NLOTH is the album of the year, buts an excellent U2 album. And it makes no sense that ATYCLB & HTDAAB gets Grammy praise but NLOTH isn't nominated for album of the year.

If U2 released MOS or Magnificent as the 1st single things would have been different. I love Boots but for the casual listener it was Vertigo 2.0.

Correct me if i am wrong wasnt a bigger bang the first album in something like 8 years?, also it was released in 2005 so sales of 3.5 million really are not that good for that time, and how ironic that it was given a 4.5 rating from a magazine with the same name as the band.

But keep on bringing the negative stuff Gibson.

 trolls  :cute:

no, it was #1 in just 10 countries, sold 2,4mln copies and it was not at the top of the best selling albums of the year list

I got my information at wikipedia. Who knows if they're accurate, but I'd check the latest sources if I were you. And you make it sound like going #1 in *just* 10 countries is something to be ashamed about. Keep in mind that No Line is not at the top of the best selling albums of the year list, either.

As you can see from the list of top selling albums worldwide in 2005, A Bigger Bang failed to make even the top 40. By the end of 2005 it had sold less than 1.5 million copies. Although HTDAAB by U2 was released in 2004 and sold most of its copies in 2004, it still made the top 40 list in 2005 coming in at #16.

When was the last time the Rolling Stones had the 2nd biggest selling album of the year worldwide?

For the rock performance...why isn't MOS (a truly great vocal) nominated ? Does it have to be a released single to be elligible for that category ?

The act's 2009 release, "No Line on the Horizon," kind of has to be nominated for album of the year
No it doesn't. It might have been nominated though if ATYCLB and Bomb didn't get so much Grammy loving. I remember thinking when they won all they could for Bomb they'll likely make a better album but it won't win. As long as their best work, JT, won, all the rest is gravy.

The better question is: what will they play ?

will they even show up? it's evident that they won't win any, and they're not nominated in a genre-sweeping category.

They weren't nominated for anything and they opened the Grammys last year. They have 3 nominations this time, including Rock album and Rock song.

Sounds like a great opportunity to play the lead single off SOA.

and that is the only reason why i would want U2 to show up. :)

Albums released in 2009 that have sold 1 million or more copies so far this year in the UNITED STATES:

01 - 1,689,521 - HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE - Soundtrack
02 - 1,533,184 - RELAPSE - Eminem
03 - 1,440,895 - THE E.N.D. (THE ENERGY NEVER DIES) - Black Eyed Peas
04 - 1,337,192 - THE BLUEPRINT 3 - Jay-Z
05 - 1,049,311 - UNSTOPPABLE - Rascal Flatts
06 - 1,042,642 - NO LINE ON THE HORIZON - U2

Thats right, of all the albums released during the year 2009, only 6 have succeeded in selling 1 million or more copies in the United States! NO LINE ON THE HORIZON is one of those albums.

I really dont think its so certain they wont win anything.

they're up against Use somebody in the Rock Song categories - and that song is also up for Song or Record of the year. They're up against Dave Matthews (lol) in the Rock Album category and DMB is up for Album of the year. Reading between the lines says they won't win.

Best rock song has to be the worst cateogory I've ever seen; excluding 90% of the other categories, looking at those lists they should just cancel the awards rather than give any of them out
