I know they're young and all that, but GWS' efforts in defence are disgraceful. North have had at least 7 marks I50, and the majority of them are uncontested. Are they even trying?

ETA: Fuck's sake, do they have to put the bloody umpires in pink?! Why always pink??

Yeah, wasn't it Bonnie who was complaining recently about women's footy teams often having pink uniforms? I'd understand if one or two teams used pink, just like any colour might be used, but the prevalence of it certainly reeks of a sexist undercurrent.

Will watch the game when I'm back home.

Fuck, look at that score. GWS are obviously having the second year blues like Gold Coast did (recall that point mid-season last year when everyone thought GWS were coming on quicker and better than the Suns?) but I'm just a bit worried about them all the same. They have so much young talent but I fear they lack the old, wise heads to lead them, like how Gold Coast has Ablett. If GWS snare Buddy, he may get patrons through the doors but he's no leader like Ablett has proved to be. Buddy's the kind of high maintenance superstar who'd be a bad influence on nurturing GWS's talent.

Speaking of Buddy, looks like Hawthorn needn't worry about the Lions pulling off a fluke comeback this week!

Petrie and Harvey beating up on minnows as usual. Petrie is absolutely worthless whenever he faces a half decent team, but here he kicks bags.

Harvey and Thomas, in particular, are the football equivalent of vultures.

Yes, I recall saying that (and even if I didn't, I'd claim to it anyway because it sounds like something I'd say). At least the players themselves weren't dressed up in that. I know that there's a relation to breast cancer awareness too, but I'd hate to see that forever associated with women's sport and women in general.

Nonetheless, I hope this is the start of more women involved in the AFL, and more girls and women being encouraged to take up the game rather than never being able to have the opportunity, or for it to be treated as a niche hobby.

also Danny, great write up, really liked it. Not at all patronising about the women (not that I'd expect it from you but I would from other journos), just a good write about about a game of footy, exactly what needed to be done. Do you think any of the girls could get a game at the highest level?

Thanks :) I hoped it would come across genuinely and all the VWFL people seem to have enjoyed it.

As in with men in the AFL? No, for a multitude of reasons. But they will tell you that themselves. They don't want to play with men.

Daisy Pearce, the number one pick, is super talented though, as is Chelsea Randall from WA. Both really good. 28 touches in one hour (Pearce) and nine marks in one hour for Randall, who was in the play every two or three minutes.

Graham Johncock retires after 227 AFL games. He was brilliant at his peak but now there's not really much he can do as his body has broken down.

I think Adelaide are best off getting as many games as possible into their youngsters (Crouch, Kedge, Laird, Shaw) for the rest of this season. Johncock was useful, but they need to quickly transition to reclaim their place in the 8 next season. Play them as much possible.

Shaw's being injured for a while, only got back into the SANFL. Grigg is also someone who needs game time since he's dominating there, Kerridge is the sort of player who has more impact in AFL level than in the SANFL. Lyons is another one.

We're an okay chance against West Coast.

Crouch gets the RS nomination. For a pretty poor year, we've got a good number of nominations.

Here's something. AFL players select their favourite tunes for a compilation CD (proceeds go to a youth homelessness non-profit).

I'd give $20 to a homeless person before I'd buy this, but gotta hand it to Nick Riewoldt. What a choice, compared to some of the other garbage on here.

Great weekend of footy coming up, tipping was a bear. I actually like Carlton's odds tonight.

Wow, I'm not surprised that it was Harry O who'd do something like this if true.

Yeah I know what you mean.

Tex is on tonight, the mullet looks disgusting in a suit, but it's getting shaved off very shortly.

It's all about Crawf though. Amazing man.

Blazing hot start for the Blues tonight. Digging it. Doesn't matter though if they can't finish.

I figured you'd be pretty excited by this start.

Collingwood seem so listless, even if Carlton are killing them in clearances.

Are we really still doing this boundary shit when we have one of the smallest, fastest rosters in the AFL? I would think that giving our players room to move would be an optimal way to use them, instead of setting them up in one on one contests along the boundary.

That is absolute dogshit, but agreed with Riewoldt. Also I thought those Coldplay songs were the same song??!?

nm me I'm not watching the game because I was playing old videogames and was commenting on that charity diszk

I feel bad for the kid Tim Watson was interviewing. He seemed so uncomfortable!
