Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here (AKA New Album Speculation)

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

I don't know why you're taking that post personally - it's a running joke now that all we have is speculation and silliness.

If and when there is actual news, I'm sure there will be at least one new thread started. So to start a new thread just to post your own opinions or speculation isn't helpful.

Not that this thread is helpful, and not that everyone finds the same things funny.

So let's just continue to irritate each other in here, and leave the new, separate threads for when there actually is news.

the U2.com mesasage boards feature this message from the "U2.com team," let's read too far into it!

While the band are off the road there's been a lot of behind-the-scenes work taking place on the site and you'll see the results of that pretty soon...
This is going to be another big year for the band, with the tour kicking off again and the band writing material for the next record.

could a site redesign be in the works? perhaps tailored to a new album design?

writing material for the next record...........to be released in 2014!!!!!

In the mean time Bono and Edge will spend the next three years trying to fix Spiderman, draining all of their income, their dignity, and ultimately the band U2

WRITING material for the next record??

wtf?!

i have officially abandoned all hope

can i have a drink?

maybe it's just U2 dot com being slow again?

*tiny ounce of hope???*

"The band" haven't been doing anything. There's probably a very good chance that all four of them probably haven't been in the same room since South Africa.

And regardless, they wouldn't be 'writing' anything now. If they're releasing something in May, its long been finished. Done. Signed, sealed, delivered to Universal. And if they aren't releasing anything in May, then they're not releasing anything till 2013/14. Not something they'd be 'writing' now, especially given that Bono and Edge have the small matter of pissing $65 million up a wall to attend to. It would - even if there were no Spider-man - quite literally be the last thing on their minds.

The people who "work" on U2.com don't know jack shit. Come on, have we ever received a legit bit of inside information from them, aside from Willie's Diary?

When an actual person is quoted then I'll start believing whatever is being said.

All joking aside, I still take McGuinne$$' words over anything said by anyone else. One has to imagine he's the most pragmatic one in the U2 camp, and empty promises are just not the habit of a good businessman.

Don't panic. The post is dated April 2010

Thanks for all the recent discussion on the site and particularly for ways in which we can make improvements to the U2.com subscriber experience. We value the passion you have for the band, the time you spend on the site and the great community of like-minded folk represented in Zootopia.

We talk regularly with our Mods and we've had some conversations this week to see how we can address some of the specific questions raised in the petition.

While the band are off the road there's been a lot of behind-the-scenes work taking place on the site and you'll see the results of that pretty soon. We're aiming to improve the look and feel of Zootopia and to make navigation easier. We're also working on the design - we know the black background isn’t popular with many of you.

We had a ton of technical issues in Zootopia last year when we switched from the Vertigo site. Most of these problems were resolved but some people are still having log-in issues. We're working with the Mods on identifying who still has difficulties: please go to the help page and select Log-in Issues from the drop down list if you have a specific log-in issue. The U2.com email account is used by lots of you with no problem but for some people it's playing up. That's now being overhauled and the Mods will have news on that this week. We're also putting more regular technical advice in the Feedback and Suggestions Forum folder.

This is going to be another big year for the band, with the tour kicking off again and the band writing material for the next record. We're planning to get more exclusive content to you, our subscribers, during 2010. Watch this space and thanks again for your support

People have always complained about that site so they're always apologizing for it. There's another post where they address the petition and there is no mention about an album or anything in Registers post.

And there were two quotes, very clear, two months apart, the last one only six weeks ago. He doesn't blow casual smoke around, and that last quote was at an industry conference. Casually chatting to some journo in New Zealand could be argued as being one thing, but he wouldn't say "Hey global music industry! New U2 album coming in May!" unless he was anything other than very, very confident in that actually happening.

The silence is certainly scary, but going into a final wrap up/mixing phase certainly suggests that they got beyond their standard creative-commercial freak out phase with this. Which in turn would suggest that they have had it 'done' for some time now.

For them to successfully get beyond that stage, to have an album good to go and with essentially no option other than to release it within this very definite window, and then back out of it anyway, it could only be for one of two reasons:

- A very serious testicular issue, which I think would make the still highly-controversial-in-these-parts argument that U2 are effectively done as a creative force probably become a common agreement.

- This very latest Spider-man delay and the rumoured heavy Bono commitment to its resurrection mean that the kind of launch they feel comfortable with, or some other optimum-release-conditions thingy, is just not possible schedule wise. And I would think that Larry and Adam would abso-fucking-lutely not be having that.

I agree Earnie, i'm pretty sure that the band has a (at least almost) finished album, and is ready for release rather than needing more work. However, the question is whether u2 want to release it or not.
After NLOTH's flop, and spiderman, it is arguable that a quick follow up is needed to get u2 back in the positive media spotlight again, and prevent their big-band status slipping. However, another dry-spell of 4 years is certainly more favourable than releasing a quick follow up that bombs. Having 2 albums that flop consecutively would not be good for u2 at their age (or really, for anyone). I'd bet that, more than a follow up to NLOTH, U2 desire a commercially successful comeback to NLOTH. They could be one and the same, but U2 would have to be damn sure that the new material they have is gonna be a hit.
I'm certain they have a finished album, but i have no idea whether they think it would help them, or royally fuck them.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but I believe the issue is not that you started a thread, but the title that you chose, which was misleading and led to disappointment for anyone who opened it expecting actual information.

Sorry, it was in reference to the date/month that was out there regarding the album release. I guess I should have used a different tittle so that there wouldn't be any issues. Look, just want to clarify things... I'm not mad cause they shut the thread, I was more annoyed at certain posters reactions towards it. I'm over it... no biggie. Hope everyone else is too. Let's just move on from it.

pull the other one...

there are soooooooooooo many other ways you could've worded that title if you were not deliberately just looking for an effect...
