I'm surprised this has averaged more than 3 given U2 fans unachievably high expectations.

I think this will grow on the general public after a few airplays.

Yeah, I would have expected lower (although maybe not that low ). Maybe in the 5-6 range.

I think the lyrics are kind of shitty like a lot of post-2000's U2 (don't yell at me, I'm not one of those "let's-hate-on-everything-post-2000" types), but I do like the dirtier tones, song structure, and Enoisms that are present. I'm not a huge fan of the song as a single, but I think that it still has a chance to grow on me in the context of the album. I gave it a 5 for now as it's a little too typical rock for my taste (sounds like U2 doing Muse), but there's still time for this one to grow on me.

Muse is typical rock?

well... my girlfriend just listened to the song. Her reaction:

"I don't if I like it or don't... The song is weird... hm, I have to listen to it again!"

Its My conviction that she'll love the song after the 3rd listen

Over 50% of posters rate it an 8 or better. That really surprises me.

I think many truly love the song, and they tend to be the types that like U2's experimental, "reinventing" side.

As for me, I like it less and less with each listen. I just think the thing has nothing of what I value in a song - melody, hooks, timelessness. It also has pretty simple and uninteresting guitar work.

I think it's a real clunker and will be the worst on the record.

I wouldn't call it a clunker, but it hasn't won me over. I rated it a 7, but it's more like a 6-7 depending on my mood. It's fun, it's a newish direction, it's energetic. It'll be a blast live.

That said, I kind of hope it is the worst on the album, cause that means we're going to have a legitimately great album on our hands. :)

I've already got my nephew who is not even 3 years old yet, singing Boots with me.

I initially gave it an 8, and I think now I'd give it a 7-7.5. The big killer for me now is that the vocals on the first "You don't know..." bit just seem a little out of tune. The other problem is that I'm moving on from a month-long stretch of Zooropa craze and into a new A Sort of Homecoming/UF mood.

I still dig it & it makes me very curious to hear what the rest of the album sounds like...

I am interested though why the "love is like a lightbulb" lien would be one of the best ever
because, first of all, I think "lightbulb" is not a 'good' sounding word
and second of all the entire 'you're the light in my life' symbolism is older and more used than I dare to imagine

I actually think its a great line. I know what you're saying about the symbolism being overused, but the context in which its used adds a slightly different dimension. When I hear that line, I always picture a shitty, derelict apartment with a bare light bulb hanging from the wire over a mattress. the bulb being the only real sense of life in the entire room. I think it was the choice of saying 'lightbulb' rather than just 'light' that conjures that image. Its the line in the song that always pulls me in.

Please don't close this thread, there's an actual exchange going on here as opposed to the typical mindless following. I gotta say the U2 doing Muse point was dead on, and zeppelinish? They've never even approached Zeppelin as far as pure rock goes. Zeppelin was the Jimmy page show, he was a composer, in many respects out of U2's league. Not to say the Edge, (who is the backbone of U2) isn't talented, but when all your tunes are just the same formulaic power chords only rearranged, eventually no matter how good the technology or how big the hype, you can only take it so far. The best part of this song for me, is the first 4 seconds, I thought WOW! Larry of all people is onto something different, but then it's gone...same old same old with the exception of some rythmic beats in the middle I'm warming up to. This is my opinion, chuck it, praise it, or break it down and tell me why it's wrong. It's only somebody else's music...

Oh, and stay in context, any 4 random words alone will proabably suck. (with exception to "the goal is soul"

Yes, this is a shitty lyric:

"love is like a lightbulb"

But this is fucking awsome:

I remember when we could sleep on stones.
Now we lie together in whispers and moans.
When I was all messed up and I heard opera in my head
Your love was a light bulb hanging over my bed.

Indeed. Also, that verse is my favorite Bono vocal of all time.

Wow. That is exactly what I think of.

Anyone who doesn't understand how great that one line is missing out. They should just end themselves.

nicely done. at first I was like  but then I was like :applaud:

Looks like the real world supports your theory. GOYB has now slipped down to #37 and #85 on itunes. To rub salt in the wounds, Coldplay's Viva La Vida (the single) is #32 on itunes and was released way back in may 2008. (I hate that song, by the way, but I included the information so people can see, barring an unlikely comeback, what a commercial failure this new U2 single is becoming.)

Trolling again? the real world? well lets see number 1 on over 4 itunes charts outside of america, or does that not count?

your loving posting everything negative about this song arent you? am sorry but the world does excist outside of america,

plus i love when you talk about a commercial failure as if a) its the offical charts, and b) america is the only country that can determain if this is a hit or not.
and p.s. the album is still in the top 5 on amazon.com (your countrys) on the back of the single.

Every musician knows that if you don't succeed in America, you don't succeed. In the countries you;ve pointed out, it probably takes only 50,000 copies to go platinum. With the cost of marketing/promotion, you need to sell a significant amount to profit. America has always been U2's coveted demographic. If you can't win over America, you can't be the biggest band in the world.

Thats BS, sorry dont succed in america then thats it? so no where else counts?, and as i said they havent even started the promotion, and your calling it a commercial flop, what a load of bollocks.

Single sales will probably go up again once the video comes out and there is a bit more promotion as so far the band have done very little....and to be honest why does anyone give a shit how well it sells? It will do well enough in itself, whatever charts its top of is really neither here nor there for me, since most artists I listen to struggle to get on the Billboard 100 anyway.

I literally cannot believe so many of you are giving this song a 10/10.

It's as good or better than Streets? One? Pride? WOWY? Bad?

Really???

27 people gave it a 1/10, which I think is equally reactionary and ridiculous.

i'm talking about the single GOYB being a flop. when the album drops, billboard will tell us the tale of US sales.

Remember what forced the Spice Girls to retire the first time? Dismal US sales figures for their last (pre-comeback) album. Maybe you didn't know that.

Agreed.

NINETY-TWO people either think this is the best song U2's ever made (no, it's not - that's not opinion, that's a motherfucking FACT) or the worst (I've got at least a dozen songs I can name that instantly come to mind that are worse).

What the hell is the matter with you people?!?

This whole thread is really pretty knee-jerk, considering the song has been out less than a week

I listened to it a lot at the beginning of the week, but I haven't played it in a few days. Right now I'd say it's a solid 7 for me--solid and enjoyable, but I'm nto sure yet if it's going to have much staying power. I'm not even going to think about rating it until I hear it in the context of the rest of the album, though.

Ohyeah, there are absolutely sleepers out there with relatively low album sales and nary an appearance in music charts. But this is U2 we're talking about. This band WANTS to be the biggest band in the world. You're not the biggest band in the world if you don't sell.

Your now really comparing U2 to the spice girls?, and sorry to burst your bubble but it wasnt just poor sales in the UK that forced the spice girls to quit, poor sales here in there homeland also contributed.
