When I moved back to PNW in 2008 I lived in an apartment for the first 6 months. I lived right beneath a single mother and her teenage daughter who liked to scream at each other until 1:00 AM. I ended up buying one of those ocean waves/babbling brook/white noise sound machine things to drown them out, and it actually worked pretty well. Not sure how well it would cover rumbling bass, though.

I always assumed constant gunfire was the norm in Utah anyway; you should just be able to sleep through it like New Yorkers sleep right through traffic noise.

But, yeah, I don't see a problem with posting a notice in the stairwell.

That whole fire thing is primarily what turns me off from the southwest. It's so gorgeous, part of me wants to move there in spite of it only having 1.2 seasons every year.

I'm not gonna deny, seeing the footage from the whole Joshua Tree period really made me want to take a trip down there. I haven't been further south than Colorado though, to be honest. One of these days, probably in mid-winter when I just can't take it anymore, I'll book a flight.

I've moved around quite a bit, and the worst place I've ever lived weather-wise was my two years on the Gulf Coast. Why anyone would want to live in constant fear that a humongous hurricane is going to wipe away your house and everything you own is quite beyond me. I kept all of my "valuables" packed in boxes year round so I would be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice.

Of course, I lived there in 2004-2005 which probably had the most active hurricane seasons on record.

The blood for blood/slapshot show this weekend got cancelled. I haven't gone to see a band play since the magnetic fields back in April, which kind of feels like a really long time.

Every day I wake up expecting to find new reasons to believe that Florida is a hellhole. I'm seldom disappointed.

Pretty much every reason I'd want to avoid Florida is weather-related. Hurricanes, humidity, giant bugs (which live there because of the weather), shit loads of old people (who also live there because of the weather)...

This talk of Florida reminds me I still need to check out the new hot water music album, though.

Bathsalts will take your mind off all of that

You can freeze your tiny little butt off in the southwest in winter time, too. :)

Nice, DB.

So I live in a small condo complex. One building of town houses, one of condos. In the last week and half, someone in my stairwell (I'm on the top floor) has started playing video games in their bedroom every night. They start between 10:30pm and 11;30, and play until midnight or 1am most every night. I'm not sure if it's just that their speakers have a decent amount of bass, or if they're actually playing with a sub-woofer, as the bass from guns and explosions in their game echoes through my room the entire time. I'm unfortunately a really light sleeper, and it's flat out ruined my sleep schedule for the last week.

For the life of me, I can't figure out where it's coming from. I thought it was the person in the unit adjacent to mine. I know it's not now, as I've heard it when he's gone. I also thought it was the unit immediately below me. Now I'm not so sure, as it seems like it may actually just be echoing up through the wall.

I have no idea who to talk to. I'm assuming others in the place have to be hearing it as well, as everyone's master bedrooms share walls because of plumbing. I'd sorta feel like a dick reporting them to the HOA, but I have no clue who else to talk to. I was tempted to print out a paper and tape it to the stairwell stating that it's extremely loud and asking them to use headphones. If you lived in a place like that and saw something like that posted, would you find it douchey or acceptable? I'm not sure what else to do.

I can totally empathize. I have confronted neighbors here and in NYC in every nice way possible and the only thing I've learned is that people don't like to be told or even asked politely to turn their noise down. I've had doors slammed in my face, threats that I'm trespassing, nasty notes left on my car, and one broken windshield. All this from, "Hi, my name is Martha, and I live right next door, and I was wondering if ...." I always thought I was being so nice that people would immediately respond with, "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I had no idea it was so loud" but that's not how it's worked out 98% of the time.

So after so many bad experiences with face-to-face encounters, I resorted to leaving anonymous notes. That didn't work out too well either.

This is why I sold my condo - the noise through the walls/floors/ceilings drove me nuts. The last straw was when I could hear the guy upstairs urinating and flushing. :|

I'm sure people in Utah are more neighborly and reasonable. I have lived in some sketchy neighborhoods where part of the issue was race/class which did not help my case.

I love my new neighborhood where the only noise I get is a family of ravens at 5AM. That's kind of a problem but I've been talking to them directly about it (yes, yes I have - martha's man would be proud of me) and lately they've been coming mid-day instead.

We have 4 seasons in Northern NM. But you might get bored here, as I do, which is why I leave a lot. But I do love my long solitary road trips through the southwest. That would be really hard to give up.

Hey guys, it's sunny and 75 here!

You can pretty much copy and paste this 300 days out of the year.

And that's wonderful.

I was in LA for Christmas one year. I remember walking into a coffee shop and seeing everyone bundled up in turtlenecks and winter coats. It was all of 55 degrees outside and I was wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

Winter coats aren't necessary til it's around 30 or lower. Although I haven't worn one in years. Hooray for layers.

55 is frigid, for LA. I do like not needing two wardrobes here. I winterize with tights and a light jacket.

That is weaksauce. Get your act together, places south of the northeast.

I saw people wearing full winter coats in the evening when I was in South Africa. It was 75 degrees...

Yeah, I remember the year that I lived in Florida people were quite frightened by the prospect of it dropping below 32 degrees. Tonight, on the local news: WHAT TO DO IF IT FROSTS!!!

I want to buy a new car. I also want to buy a dog. Which is more important?

I still fire up the grill in January. Sure, it's 20 degrees out, but grills get mighty warm.
