The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

It's not using "bose" technology. My parents are friends with people working on the tour and it's using a pretty basic line array, just aiming it down to direct the sound at people below the claw.

Great, thanks for the info. Will be interested to get people's feedback on the sound quality.

Dropping these by here as well. Same pics as above but resized so that it's easier to get a good look at everything all at once.
Hope no one minds, but there are some great looks at the CLAW.
1 more day!!!!!!!!!!1

Judging by the setup it appears they may be incorporating BOSE technology. If this is the case it should be leaps and bounds of sound improvement to what we are used to in a stadium setting.

In a typical speaker setting the closer you are to a speaker the louder it is. With Bose technology sound is dispersed. I have a Bose PA system. It is amazing. The clarity is beyond description. IT IS SOOO GOOD. Whether you are right in front of the speaker or 30 feet away the loudness is the same. It's like the system places music through out the place (dispersing sound). I can have my microphone right in front of the speaker and there is no feedback.

The speakers array mounted on top of the 360 structure resemble Bose very much. I am very excited at the possibility that they may be implementing this technology. I don't know why we don't see this as a standard already. Bose technology is VERY expensive. That might have something to do with it.

Anyway, I have high hopes for this tour and I do believe U2 are dedicated to providing a quality experience.

Cross your fingers with me. :)

i hate to break it to you but BOSE achieves what they do with sound by flattening the frequency range. like someone above me said, "no highs no lows". bose isn't expensive, it's overpriced. it's like starbucks, on in every mall. get in front a true audiophile setup and then you'll hear what clear, clean audio sounds like.

thats the only thing I am really worried about, the sound quality in some stadiums. It will look spectacular this claw and visuals etc. But the main ingredient of a rock concert has to be the sound quality. I will visit AmsterdamArenA and that roof will be closed. The sound at vertigo was horrible at most locations in the stadium (especially in the seats). How is possible they choose locations like that? Is it possible they only control the sound quality as you hear it at certain distance from the stage (where the audioboards are?)

Spiderman should be wearing an Adam shirt. Adam is WAY cooler than Spiderman.

Mark

Oh but I was thinking maybe Bono has won over Adam for a U2 version of the Spiderman musical. Then it would be 3-1 and maybe Larry will give in

Yeh sorry but BOSE are overrated.. like B&O they are over-priced 'lifestyle' products and would be dreadful in a concert environment. U2's are probably Clair Brothers Audio or something specialist like that.

Not Bose PA. U2 have had along standing and well documented relationship with Clair Bros.

And now that we're on the subject of super geek techno / equipment talk, is that a Pearl boom stand on Larry's Yamaha drum kit? The young rebel!

I've been playing music professionally for 25 years and their PA system is far and above the best PA system out. I don't know shit about their home theatre, but the musician's line is superior.

I get highs and lows and nuances unheard of. It's amazing.

This is a joke post right? Bose has been a joke for a while now.

Agreed. Among the audiophile community Bose is given the kind of poisonous response Coldplay is given around here. ;-). It's not that they are the worst speaker company on earth, it's just that the bang for the buck with Bose is among the poorest in market. I'll save my breath on specifics, but basically you've fallen for the marketing if you believe they are top tier. If you want the long version, you can go here: http://www. intellexual. net /bose.html (you'll have to take the spaces out and paste in, I wanna keep mods happy.) The article is close to five years old, but since they still spend all their money on marketing and lawsuits, I'd say it still applies.

OK, who else noticed how close Joe O'Herlihy sits from the stage? Bloody close to me....

This made me confirm that I can easily move around at will in GA and not worry at all. I've also got seats at Rogers Centre for night 2, situated just right of Joe.

:hyper:

What's the music they open that video with? It's the same thing from that unrecognizable #2 clip a while back...

These are hung line arrays no ifs ands or buts. The difference between this and the Vertigo outdoor show is that the vertigo show had huge cabinets that hung bass and treble, but it was more of a wall of sound idea versus line array. With line array you have many more smaller units that can be hung in different configurations and as each unit is wedge shaped in the back, each unit's hang angle can be adjusted within the line. Coupled with their modelling software, the sound team will be able to model this sound much more precisely with smaller units in more abundance. They will also be able to tweak the sound on a stadium to stadium basis more finitely than they were with the big cabinets. If the upper decks are steeper, higher, flatter, more absorbant or reflective all calibrates into how they units are mixed, and even physically how many units are used and at what angle. I would argue that we may actually see these lines change in size and angle depending on the size of the venue they are playing in.

I would bet that they are Clair Brothers as CB has supplied every U2 tour since the beginning. I coauld not find the exact model on their site, but if I had to guess I would say this is their CAT214 system with custom grilles:

Since almost every major audio company is now manufacturing touring line arrays, I have to imagine Joe O'H commissioned these from Clair and no one else. If he did go elsewhere he probably got them sourced from L'Acoustics (as they really are the ones who pioneered line array with v-Dosc) and they are probably part of their K1 system:

Final_Array3.jpg

What I find interesting is that he has not hung seperate subs over the horns and the rest of the cabinets. They look like they are the same cabinets from the bottom of the hang to the top. I think he actually hung the subs down the outside edge of each hang with the mixed units on the inside. Moreover, from this photo I think the base of the stage is lined with subwoofers which means high high tones coming down from above, and the lows spreading out across the floor:

n090616_05.jpg

From the pics it looks like there are approximately (18 mixed cabinets x 2 lines = 36) + (18 subs x 2 lines = 36) = 72 cabinets per hang. Multiply that by 2 for each North and South side = 144 cabinets per side x 2 = 288. For the East and West sides there are 16 mixed cabinets and 16 subs per hang x 2 per side = 64 per side x 2 sides = 128 cabinets on the East and West. So N, S, E, W = 416 Cabinets hung above the stage. There also look to be 40 subwoofers under the stage.

I do not think there are any cabinets under the catwalk, but I would not be surprised if there are.

The delay towers look like they have 8 cabinets each.

So total without catwalk - I count 472 cabinets which is a huge amount of sound.

The most interesting thing out of all of this is that Joe O'H really has a much much more advanced toy to play with than ever before. Forgetting that they are even using line array for a second he is doing so in 3 dimensions. He has obviously done this in every arena tour, but to be able to model his sound in stadiums at this scale is amazing. Rather than just pointing the boxes out from one end of the stadium with some delays and different angles, he will be able to model what each side of the stadium will hear prior to each show as he has such control with so many units and locations.

Enough nerd speak.

This is going to be fucking loud.

As I said in another thread, the new song (?) reminds me of something off of Low or Heroes.
