Westlife, Blue Top U.K. Charts
Domestic male pop acts Westlife and Blue rule the new U.K. charts, released yesterday (Nov. 10). On the singles chart it was Irish boy band Westlife, which scored its 11th No. 1 single with "Unbreakable" (S/BMG). Innocent/Virgin quartet Blue hit the top of the album chart with "One Love," an achievement made more notable as it limited U2's "The Best Of 1990-2000" (Universal/Island) to a No. 2 debut.
Westlife's latest success in a run of 11 chart-toppers in three-and-a-half years precedes today's release of "The Greatest Hits," featuring all of those No. 1s plus six new songs. It's particularly good news for BMG as the group's last single "Bop Bop Baby" peaked at No. 5, Westlife's least successful release, prompting media proclamations of the group's imminent demise.
Shania Twain returned to the singles scene at No. 4 with "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" (Mercury). It's her fourth consecutive U.K. top-5 single, although the Canadian pop country superstar has yet to have a No. 1 here. Missy Elliott's "Work It" (Elektra) arrived at No. 6 and Dannii Minogue's "Put the Needle on It" (London) at No. 7, the sixth top-10 hit over a period of 11 years for Kylie's sister.
Further down the survey, there were disappointing entries for Britney Spears, whose cover of "I Love Rock'n'Roll" bowed at No. 13, her lowest-ever U.K. chart debut, and Phil Collins, whose version of Leo Sayer's "Can't Stop Loving You" (Face Value/East West) opened at No. 28.
Justin Timberlake's "Justified" (Jive) made its British album chart debut at No. 6, while multi-platinum Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's "Sentimento" (Philips) opened at No. 7, and Badly Drawn Boy's "Have You Fed the Fish" (Twisted Nerve/XL Recordings) at No. 10.
Around Europe, Las Ketchup's "Asereje/The Ketchup Song" (Columbia) still tops Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally, while Santana's "Shaman" (Arista) rises 2-1 on European Top 100 Albums chart, ahead of a No. 2 entry for Geffen's self-titled Nirvana compilation.
