Marlon Byrd is one of the players I absolutely miss most on the Cubs. It seems like people didn't enjoy him much, in Chicago, but I think he was a victim of timing. Regardless, I do believe he was my very first Cubs avatar, or maybe the second, and watching him play for the Phillies isn't something I much care for  (Though I do think it's nice that he went back "home", I'm not sure he'd consider it much of one, since the Phil's kinda bailed on him after one season.)

What can you guys offer for Marlon? Dazzle me.

Seeing as he has little-to-none surplus value with his contract and the likelihood demand that his option year get picked up, probably a change of scenery type of guy and a bullpen arm. I could see either Dustin Ackley or Erasmo Ramirez and maybe someone like Logan Kensing for Byrd.

The Phillies aren't looking for bullpen guys (the Philly bullpen actually is on the upswing now with some good, young talent starting to find its way) or change-of-scenery types (unless it's for their own guys in that situation like Dom Brown). They want prospects. If Seattle isn't willing to deal prospects I don't see them getting Byrd.

Also, Byrd's contract is quite reasonable. He's on pace for a 3+ WAR season (after a 5 WAR season last year) while getting paid like a 1.5 WAR guy. Just because there's an option year doesn't mean it's not a good deal.

In all seriousness, for the love of God RA3, if you make this trade you better get some good prospects. I don't care who gets traded out at this point as long as they get some actual future value in return.

This prompted me to look up some horrible Cubs deals...we had Rafael Palmeiro and Jamie Moyer on the same team and traded them for a relief pitcher who lasted with us one year? :yikes:

I admit to not being as up to speed with my team's history, prior to 2003, as I should be, but maybe some stuff, it's better I don't know.

Byrd isn't going to get anyone of value because he's old and going to probably make 16 million dollars and is signed until he is 39 years old. Last year he put up 4.1 WAR. This year he has put up 1.0. His defense was not good last year, and is horrible this year, his baserunning has been negative, and he's only putting up a wRC+ of 119 because his OBP sucks, and he's striking out at a higher rate than he has in his career.

I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment for what RAJ is going to get in return for Byrd....

Here are a few for the Mariners.

- Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for Heathcliff Slocumb
- David Ortiz for a couple months of Dave Hollins
- Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin Soo Choo for Eduardo Perez and Ben Broussard
- Adam Jones and Chris Tillman for Erik Bedard

And you're simply not getting Byrd for a bullpen guy. The Phillies have no use for a 32-year-old reliever.

Right, which is why I suggested there would be someone else in there who may have value as a change of scenery guy like Erasmo Ramirez who was recently a mid-level pitching prospect who has an amazing change, throws in the low 90s, but has had control problems, or Dustin Ackley, who was a top 10 prospect recently who has some sort of mental block at the plate as his peripherals are still just fine, and is a very good defender in multiple positions. Each of whom are controlled for 3 or 4 more years.

I'd say four nothing prospects for Cliff Lee, but that was essentially ruined by flipping Lee for three nothing prospects just five months later. So ... uh ... hmm ... nothing, I guess. Can I answer the Jrue Holiday trade here or does it have to be baseball?

what's everyone's best trade?

I'd have to go with some guy for Jose Bautista.

Whatever trade got Alfonso Soriano out of Chicago

But in all seriousness, Hee-Seop Choi for Derek Lee landed one of my all time favorite Cubs in place of a guy that just never quite worked out. We had quite a few decent trades during that time, including the one that got Ramirez and Lofton.

And of course, getting Ryne Sandberg from the Phillies.

Oooh! Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis for Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, Mike Rabelo, Dallas Trahern, Eulogio de la Cruz, and Burke Badenhop!

I think there was reported deals on the table of Ellsbury, and there was Kemp + Kershaw.

Marlins win!

I'd have to think about it more, but off the top I'd say one trade I loved very much was when we sent Carlos Lee to the Brewers for Scott Podsednik, who then was our gamechanging leadoff man on a World Series championship team.

I loved getting Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter, but this was short lived and Quentin couldn't fucking stay healthy ever.

We scooped the Cubs for Jon Garland who then was a stud World Series winner and one of my favorite pitchers ever. Getting Uribe in exchange for Aaron Miles helped that 05 team a lot too. I'm blanking on the trade (?) that netted us Freddy Garcia for that team right now cuz I'm kinda drunk.

PAULIE KONERKO was a trade acquisition too! For fucking Mike Cameron! Holy shit that 05 team was not very home grown.
