Random Music Thread XXXIII: Laz Goes Tubing, Gets Run Over By Tugboat

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

It's just kind of an unwritten rule. Like not wearing white after Labor Day or not exposing yourself to the mayor no matter how many drinks I had.

I wish I had more consistent work... I want to buy so many TV shows on DVD. Fresh Prince of Bel Air is the latest.

That's a great show - a classic, really. I was just talking with a girl the other day who claimed that she was at a bar in LA with Carlton, Zack Morris, and Charles in Charge - all at the same table.

How about this: a once wore a Led Zeppelin III shirt to a Robert Plant concert. Fair or foul?

I'm really glad I got to see Plant tour Mighty Rearranger. Very underrated album and a great show.

Those both would've been good gets, and I've heard positive things about his Band of Joy shows (and the album, incidentally). I'm excited to finally see Krauss and Union Station at ACL this year.

So, Marry Me is just as good as Actor, if not better. Lower peaks (Laughing With A Mouth of Blood and Black Rainbow are my favorite St. Vincent songs), but overall higher in quality. I'm so fucking excited for Annie's new album. 3 more months...

Uncle T-Bag, it's getting high time for your first half roundup thread, no?

I never talk about Krauss in here cos I assume I'm the only one that likes her.....

I'm sort of in love with her voice.

Yeah, hers is one of my favorite female voices for sure. My old man is a big fan, so I heard a ton of her stuff growing up in the 90s and it's always kind of stuck with me. Sort of the same deal with my Emmylou adoration. It's not the sort of music I'd really expect myself to be into, but I've got a soft spot for it.

You like Lucinda Williams, Deputy? I feel she's a little more Neil Young than Emmylou Harris, but it's still great modern country, which I'm always pleasantly surprised to hear. She has a new album, Blessed, that I keep putting off. Hear it's good though.

Yes and yes. He was magnificent on that tour.

I saw Plant & Page, which was VERY cool....and I saw Plant & Krauss, which was also cool but in a different way.

Raising Sand would probably rank among my top five albums of the 2000s - just beautiful throughout. I wanted so badly to see them on that tour, but, if I remember correctly, they did not play anywhere north of Dixie. I did, however, see the show at which they first performed together - a Ledbelly tribute in Cleveland. I think that was 2004. Apparently they decided after the show to record an album together.

Not familiar enough with her to have much of an opinion.

Just throw on Car Wheels On A Gravel Road sometime and see what you think. It's dusty, depressing, and more than a little fucked up, but it rocks, and the amount of palpable emotion to be heard there is astounding. You feel every word she sings, and that's what I love in a country album.

Wow, alright. On your recommendation, I will finally hear this. I guess I was put off by how many covers are on it. Well, that and I just can't picture Robert Plant not rocking. Then again, I suppose it's for the best. Led Zeppelin will never be what the Who became.

I really wished I was standing by you guys so we could all freak out together.

There would have been a lot of hugging, probably from people you didn't even know. You might have exploded. :)

I have to say....it was kind of extra special getting to watch with so many interlanders....we all post in so many different threads that I sometimes forget the core thing most of us have in common.....a love of the band. Like, a pack of die-hards, not casual fans. It made for a unique and special environment that I'll not soon forget.

I have nothing I can add that can add to the simple beauty of that statement, so I'll just :)

We'll be driving from Clarendon, Texas, to Liberal, Kansas that day.

I have spent the night in Liberal, Kansas. All I remember about it is that I was staying at a hotel in Liberal, Kansas.

I wore a U2 shirt to the 2nd Anaheim show and had to punch a few people in the face because of it. So it all worked out in the end.

You know, I thought there was something vastly uncool about you on Saturday. I just couldn't quite put my finger on it.

I like that album a lot. I have a few other CDs of hers, and I find myself growing way too weary of her voice about halfway through. But not Car Wheels.

Lately, I've had fun just searching through the rateyourmusic psychedelic pop charts and picking out whatever is rated highest. I've come across some great shit.

First, this Swedish band, Dungen, that sounds a little like Super Furry Animals, but much heavier:

YouTube - ‪Dungen - Gjort Bort Sig (Live Roskilde 2005)‬‏

YouTube - ‪Dungen - Festival‬‏

And, lighter but no less exciting, I'm really liking this Italian pysch-pop musician Lucio Battisti. His music has a flamenco thing happening, mixing in some Tropicalia (a genre I am coming to love quite dearly) as well, but much spacier. This track has an epic, danceable climax that takes the shit to another level:

I saw them just outside of Chicago in the Summer. It was great. I love that album very much.

Not even the one I bought while the opening band was on? That won't make me look old school? :(

I'll allow it because then it's obvious you just bought it and don't want to hold it during the show. But if it was a t-shirt from an earlier leg of the tour which is no longer available, or from a previous tour, that would not be allowed.

Hard not to like her.

Has anyone ever told the folks in the Now Playing thread about last.fm?

Airplane museum there. That's all you need to know.

I fucking LOVE Dungen. Maybe the best concert I saw last year. In my top five bands most of the time.

Honestly, I've been trying to get into Dungen since they first started putting out music. But I just can't. The effort has led to my discovering any number of great Swedish and Scandinavian acts, over the years, and for that I'm very grateful. It's been worth it, ultimately. But I really don't get it. Either way, Subliminal Sounds is a GREAT fucking label.
