What your BEST LINE EVER from a U2 song?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
"Thunder,thunder on the mountain...there's a raincloud....in the desert sky."

I love that line.

there's a lot from "POP" and "Achtung Baby" here...but I agree those albums got the strongest lyrics...POP is really underestimated.....

Also remarkable that there are almost no HTDAAB-quotes...

Favorite Line

I am so retarded.

Here is my favorite line(s):
The glass is cut The bottle run dry Our love runs cold In the caverns of the night We're wounded by fear Injured in doubt I can lose myself You I can't live without

My favorite songs (lyrically) are from the Joshua Tree.

I've been fortunate to get an advance copy of the new album/DVD and cried the first time I heard "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" especially the acoustic version

Surely one of the most honest lyrics Bono has ever written. The line about "its you I see in the mirror, it's you when I pick up the phone" means so much to me right now as my own father passed away not so long ago...........
.

I dont know if its 100% my favorite line,, But it was part of the reason why i really got hooked on U2.

Back when the fly video was just released, i didn´t know much else than Pride, and streets.. But when i saw the fly video, i remember hearing the line

Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief

And the ironic in that line, together with the amazing song made me instantly hooked on U2.

Anyway, then how to choose

I'm sure it's been mentioned before.. but

waves of regret and waves of joy, I reached out for the one I tried to destry, but you, you said you'd wait until the end of the world

My high school yearbook quote was:
"It's no secret that a liar won't believe anyone else"

Also big fan of:
"LET IT GO!!!!"

from Wide Awake's version of Homecoming:
"Aww, don't sorrow, no don't weep
For toooniiight with you
I am coming home...I am coming home"

"She's gonna dream up the world she wants to live in
She's gonna dream out loud"

"I'm not afraid to die, I'm not afraid to live.
And when I'm flat on my back, I hope to feel like I did."

I have 20 pages of great u2 lines, but this might be one of the deepest things I've ever heard. I just relate to it so much because its about not being scared to die and not waiting around for it, live your life to the fullest.

"Where you live should not decide
Whether you live or whether you die"

-Crumbs From Your Table

I don't know if this is the best line ever but it is one of the most sobering. Whenever someone shows apathy towards tragedies around the world, I try to explain that we are all on this planet together and it is sheer luck that we are fortunate to be born in an industrialized nation and not the third world. As I write this , I am watching the prequel of the Live Aid video which is heart wrenching and explains the motivation behind Live Aid and Bono's enduring crusade against poverty in the world. This lyric will remain with me for the rest of my life.

Peace out

As of right now, "I've had enough of romantic love..." It just explains how I've been feeling lately.

I love all of 'Stay' and from 'Dirty Day' ...

"Be careful where you aim,
For where you aim you just might hit.
You can hold on to something so tight,
You've already lost it..."

I'm also loving the line in 'Yaweh'...
"Take this mouth,
So quick to criticise.
Take this mouth...give it a kiss!"
It always makes me smile and reminds me to shut my gob!!!

I always thought these lines from "Running to Stand Still" were brilliant...

"She walks through the streets/her eyes painted red/under a black belly of clouds in the rain/in through a doorway she brings me/ white gold and pearls stolen from the sea...

She is raging..."

Can't leave out HTDAAB!

From Sometimes

...Still can't let you go
A house doesn't make a home
Don't leave me hear alone
(Hard not to choke up, especially on 1st listen or live)

From Vertigo

Your love is teaching me how
how to kneeeel
(no special poetry, but quite a statement of faith)

From Miracle Drug

Where you live should not decide
whether you live or whether you die
Three to a bed, Sister Ann she said
Dignity passes byyyy

(well said, even though it's somewhat predictable)

From COBL

Some pray for, others steal
Blessings aren't just for the one's who kneel
Luckily...

From Crumbs

And you speak
of signs and wonders
but I need
something other
I would believe
If I was able
but I'm waiting on
the crumbs
from your table

(Awesome)

From Xanax & Wine

Save me, save me from myself
I know that you've been good to me
now I need you not to be

Wake me, it feels like I've been asleep
I'm buying things I can't afford
trying not to look so bored

(Personal experience)

I could go on and on, but just wanted to mention a few of the brilliant lines from Atomic. These songs haven't really had time to set in, but there will be just as many memorable lyrics, IMO

wow, it's hard to pick ONE favorite line, but here's one that has stayed with me for years and I still really FEEL it every time I hear it. It gives me hope and has gotten me through some rough times:

the ruins to the right of me
will soon have lost sight of me
love rescued me

Molly

Um... the entire "Achtung Baby".

But if I had to choose, just for the coolness of it: Look I gotta go/ I'm running out of change/ There's a lot of things if I could I'd rearrange

I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you steal
All this you can leave behind

These words changed my life after hearing Bono sing them live during the Elevation tour in 2001!!! I can't explain further as it is very pesonal.

If I could, you know I would, If I could I would, let it go

and . . .

You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly for freedom

both about letting go, something I still haven't learned to do

Oh Achtung Baby definitely
The Fly!!

and I really like these lines from Stay:

And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing

Stay...with the demons you drowned
Stay...with the spirit I found
Stay...and the night would be enough

"See the sun rise over her skin
She feels like water in my hand
Freeway, like a river, cuts through this land
Into the side of love
Like a burning spear
And the poison rain
Brings a flood of fear
Through the ghost ranch hills
Death valley waters
In the towers of steel
Belief goes on and on!"

Every artist is a canable, every poet is a theif. They kill their insperation and sing about their greif....

I love how this mocks themselves looking back at Rattle and Hum. The album before Achtung Baby.

My fave lines ever tourist...

ALOT of great lines have been quoted already. Some that jumped out at me were:

"We thought that we had the answers/It was the questions we had wrong" - 11 O'clock Tick Tock

"Charity dance with me.
Turn me around tonight.
Up through the spiral staircase
to the higher ground." -Promenade

I had never realized he is saying 'charity'. That makes it so awesome! The KJV translation of 1 Cor. 13 uses 'charity' for the word 'love' and I would bet Bono drew from that.

One of my absolute favs hasn't been mentioned yet. Did everyone forget this line from Sunday, Bloody Sunday?
"The real battle has just begun/ To claim the victory Jesus
won, on a Sunday Bloody Sunday"
Absolutely stunning. After all the words about war and violence, Bono says the real battle (IMO, the battle vs. death) has just begun. Christians believe that Jesus defeated death by His resurrection, and offers eternal life to all who will claim His victory. That fact that Jesus was resurrected on a Sunday (Easter) ties in perfectly, and beautifully, with the title of the song.

Spoken words during live shows should have never entered this discussion, but since they have, I'll mention these Bono quotes:
"I believe in shampoo!!" -ZooTv
"Bend over, San Fransisco!!" (Hilarious)- ZooTv

I have plenty of other favs (including HTDAAB), but I can't type forever.

"When I was all messed up and I heard opera in my head,
Your love was a lightbulb hanging over my bed"

-Ultraviolet

LIGHT MY WAY!
