Well, when I started to reply here I was pretty sure I had a few in mind... then I realized how futile trying to pick a couple of favorite U2 lines is. So I'll throw in some, then kick myself for the ones I forgot.

For starters: all of Bad, all of A Sort of Homecoming, all of The Fly, all of Zooropa (the song), all of Please, all of Like a Song and all of Numb (of course!)

- Innocent and in a sense I am / Guilty of the crime that's now in hand

- You hurt yourself you hurt you lover, then you discover / What you thought was freedom just was greed

- If you need someone to blame / Throw a rock in the air you'll hit someone guilty

- And I know it aches and your heart it breaks / You can only take so much / Walk on

- It's the stuff, it's the stuff of country songs, but I guess, yeah it's something to hold on

And finally, since no one's mentioned it yet (I don't think), all of Wild Irish Rose:

In a field by a river, my love and I did lie
And on my naked shoulder, she too proud to cry
She said that I must leave her; and icy tear she froze
How could I melt the heart of a wild Irish rose?

Well a gypsy she has made of me, a servant of the street
And back to bed I've travelled, to taste a love as sweet
Well the heart it knows no reasons, and reason never knows
As I lie with them I'm thinkin of a wild Irish rose

Well I saw the city of angels, it brought a devil out in me
And Hell's hotel on sunset showed a whore no mercy

The orange sky was screaming; from the roof I let her go
These are the dizzying heights that brought me my wild Irish rose

Red is the rose that she laid on my grave
A life was what she wanted and a life I surely gave
Like a hundred men before me, they lay lying here in rows
Young men, bloody, as a wild Irish rose.

And, of course, everything everyone else has mentioned

Favourite lyric is all very circumstantial to me. It really depends on what my mood is, where I am and what I'm listening to at the time.

But I'll offer lyrics from three songs that currently strike a chord within me:

And it's true we are immune / When fact is fiction and TV reality - Sunday Bloody Sunday

She knows just what she's worth / She's living like it's the last night on earth - Last Night on Earth, from Popmart Mexico

Like a preacher stealing hearts at a traveling show - Desire

And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah I'd break, break bread and wine
If there was a church I could believe in
'cause I need it now.

ACROBAT.

"I don't believe in painted roses, or bleeding hearts, while bullets rape the night of the merciful, I'll see you again, when the stars fall from the sky, over One Tree Hill"

One Tree Hill, one of my absolute favorite U2 songs, along w/ The Fly, Lemon, Discotheque, and as of now Vertigo

Best lyrics - always changing

My favorite lyrics since 1991 have been from the Fly, which has been already mentioned in this thread. Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief, etc.

Then, when watching Slane Castle, I picked up on a verse that I never listened to very closely before, and it fits a lot of what I'm going through personally on issues of faith, doubt, after-life, etc. From Out of Control...

I fought fate
there's blood at the
Garden Gate

It's in your childhood,
They say that's in your childhood (secular society with no faith?)

But one day I'll die
the choice will
not be mine

Will it be too late?
You can't fight fate...

"I have a brother,
When I'm a brother in need
I spend my whole time running
He spends his running after me"

Another great lyric, "And a woman needs a man/like a fish needs a bicycle"!

"The last of the rock stars, when hip-hop drove the big cars"

and

"These days days days run away like horses over the hill"

Lyrics of Stay (Faraway, So Close!)

+

"The lines on your face
are a map to your soul"
- Summer Rain

"Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without"
- One

"You're packing a suitcase for a place
None of us has been
A place that has to be believed
To be seen"
- Walk On

"So love is hard
And love is tough
But love is not
What you're thinking of"
- Please

How about.

Faraway, so close. Up with the static and the radio. WIth satellite television. You can go anywhere. Miami, New Orleans,
London, Belfast, and Berlin... And if you listen I cant call And if you jump you just might fall. And if you shout. I'll only hear you.

Oh I have to think one of the best is from Ultraviolet (Light My Way)......

"...when I was so messed up and I had opera in my head - your love was a lightbulb hanging over my bed..."

Love it ... just love it!

These days my favourite line is from love comes tumbling:

All roads lead to where you are
All roads lead to where you are

I don't believe in death row
Skid row or the gangs
Don't believe in the Uzi
It just went off in my hand
- God Part II

Am I buggin' you? I don't mean to bug ya...
- Silver And Gold (spoken)

She runs through the streets
With her eyes painted red
Under black belly of cloud in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White gold and pearls stolen from the sea
She is raging
She is raging
And the storm blows up in her eyes
She will...

Suffer the needle chill
She's running to stand...

Still.
- Running to Stand Still

Boy, stupid boy
Don't sit at the table
'til you're able to

Toy, broken toy
You shout and shout
You're inside out

'til you don't know...Electric co.

- Electric Co

There are many others and a few off hand that right now won't exit my head especially Vertigo...

It's everything I wish I didn't know
Except you give me something
I can feel
Feel

and

All of Love is Blindness

God what a Band!

And these are the days when we look for something other

Love Is Blindness:
Love is drowning in a deep well
All the secrets
And no one to tell
Take money
Honey
Blindness

Even Better Than The Real Thing:
Give one more chance and I'm gonna make you sing
Give me half a chance to ride on the waves that you bring
You're a honey child
To a swarm of bees
Gonna blow right through you like a breeze.....

Until The End Of The World:
In the garden I was playing the (don't remember if he said harp or tart)
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You...You was acting like it as the end of the world

I also like the lyrics to Exit.
There are too many songs to choose from!!

Hopefully I didn't butcher any lyrics because I'm kind of drowsy right now.

In my dreams I was drowning in sorrows
but my sorrows they learned to swim.

Instant karma gonna get 'em
if I don't get 'em first
(I'm a Lennon fan too)

You say you give me
---
a river in a time of dryness

You gave me nothing now it's all I've got

The water is warm 'till you discover how deep

You're in my mind all the time
I know that's not enough
(just so emotional)

Just some of many!

And all your lessons in history"

IS THAT ALL

"Singing this song makes me angry
I'm not angry with you
Is that all"

Here are a few...

She will suffer the needle chill,
She's running to stand still. RTSS

From a firefly, a red orange glow.
See the face of fear, running scared in the valley below. BTBS

From a locust wind, comes a rattle and hum.
Jacob wrestled the angel, and the angel was overcome. BTBS

And if the mountains should crumble,
Or disappear into the sea,
Not a tear, no not I. UF

You gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking,
Scream without raising your voice. RTSS

(All of Bad...)

The more you see the less you know,
The less you find out as you grow. COBL

And so we are told, this is the golden age,
But gold is the reason for the wars we wage. NYD

One day I'll die, the choice will not be mine,
Will it be too late?
You can't fight fate. OOC

I wanna run, I want to hide;
I wanna tear down the walls that hold me inside. WTSHNN

Ok, I'll stop...

"I'm not afraid to die. I'm not afraid to live. And when I'm flat on my back, I hope to feel like I did." --- Kite

Wow, that line is so powerful. To me, it's about facing death and not being afraid to die; it's about taking chances in life and not being afraid to live. And when you feel like you are down and out, just think about those feelings and you'll be able to get yourself back on your feet.
