:sad:U2 Larry: My kids use me as taxi driver

Rocker does fare share of parenting

The Mirror, January 07, 2009

By Michael Sharkey

U2's Larry Mullen Jnr. confessed he feels more like a taxi driver than a rocker as he ferries his kids around so much.

The Dublin-born drummer made the revelation after being asked about a typical day away from the group.

Father-of-three Larry added: "There's rarely a day when there isn't something to do with the band. But a lot of the time I feel like I should put a cap on my head and a sign over my car with taxi written on it.

"I spend a lot of time ferrying children, including other people's, to various houses.

There's swimming, ballet, soccer -- it goes on.

"And if you are left in charge, food is a big issue.

"Everyone wants different things. So I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. But I enjoy it."

Larry, 47, confessed having a family has left him with little time to indulge his passion for motorcycles.

He added: "I still love bikes. But I haven't ridden in a long time. Having kids changed that.

"Not only from the safety point of view. You have choices -- what are you going to do?

"Go off for three days with your tent or actually take care of your kids?

"In 10 years time I'll have as much time as I want to go off and do all those things." The millionaire star also revealed that he and his bandmates don't socialise as much as they used to after working in the studio.

He told Q magazine: "It happens occasionally. But when I'm finished on Friday, I'm straight home to see my family.

"That's my choice. So we spend less time on a social level. We're still friends, but it's a lot more difficult now.

"It's not the four guys fighting the world. That doesn't exist any more. The opportunity to just sit around the pub and have a pint and talk doesn't happen as often as it should."

I spend a lot of time ferrying children to ballet, swimming and soccer."

  Looks like 10 more years of U2 so the last album will be in 2017?? Finish touring in 2018-2019???:sad::sad:

We'll just see greater breaks between albums and tours. It'll be more like every 6 years. bono and edge don't seem to want to stop, they might form another group, you know?

I've got say that this does not worry me:

First, because he's meaning that in 10 years his children will be more independent and that he won't have to spend as much time as he does now with then.
Second, if Larry leave the band he is the only member that doing that, won't cause the band to break up. IMO.

Thats how i read it.

Exactly, he never said he'll stop.

Yeah, that's Larry......

This is they're last abum folks....at least for a long time......probably until at least 6-7 years and then it's over.

Ok, now where's last unicorn and BVSS to curse me out?
:up::down:

a) He said he'll have time in 10 years because his kids will be grown up in ten years,
b) They don't socialise as much as they used to because they're grown men with families and they spend so much time in the studio making music together that they don't have much free time any more, and
c) its Larry ...

That kinda scared me, too, when I first read that. But I'm sure that he means that in ten years his kids will be older and will be able to drive themselves around. The interviewer must not have thought that Larry meant he was quitting the band in ten years, either, or he would have asked Larry to elaborate more, I would think.

um...some perspective here?
regardless how you read it - and it does not matter - do you know how much can happen in 10 years?
to be worried about U2's existence or relative output 10 years from now is...shall we say...a little premature?

Am I the only one who kinda doesn't want them to still be around in 10 years time? I think right now, and this new album will prove it even more, that they are unparalleled in popular music history - the longevity with which they have managed to maintain a consistantly successful career.

However, this can only continue for so long. Personally I'd much rather they exited with grace rather than out of embarrassment for some album that gets a poor reaction leaving them ending up looking like tired old guys desperately trying to cling on to their career. Just my thoughts, but we need to except guys - it can't go on forever, lets just make the most of the time they are around now.

Haha. I've heard many parents say that they are like unpaid taxi driver for their kids. At least they seem to lead an active lifestyle instead of siting in front of a television screen playing computer games.

The interviewer should have asked him what kind of food he can cook. I would like to try some of chez Larry's dishes. Yum

Sad thing is, I'm 20 years younger than Larry and I'm feeling the exact same way. Life is busy, your free time is non existent, and no time to hang with the boys.

All three options are probably true.

Well, at least he has some use.

Funny.

Don't worry, I wish they hadn't been around for, at barest minimum, the last 10 years.

Not funny.

That is how I feel sometimes too and I'm 19 years younger than Larry.

Agreed. Add in Larry's back/wrists and Bono's vocals as the main risks.

sounds like a very generalised comment to me - i doubt Larry knows the exact time-line for U2.
Nothing to worry about imo

She is finding me a therapist or something. On topic:

I think this is great news. Lets be realistic people ,do you really want to see Bono at 60 juping around like Mick Jagger. They have given us so many great moments. Lets them go out with decency and style and not like 4 over the hill still wanna be 21 years old rockers
