Assuming U2 do an anniversary show or tour for Achtung Baby (of course, they might not), what would you like to see in the setlist?
I know some posters in the previous thread discussed a ZooTV anniversary tour - that idea isn't interesting to me. The band wouldn't be able to top or even match the spectacle of the original, it would be futile to try, and I don't think they could pull off the ironic rock star thing anymore. I think they should just focus on the music. Achtung definitely stands on its own without ZooTV.
So here's my idea: A one-off show in a Berlin club, broadcast live online. I think a one-off is a good idea, because the band could give the show their all and avoid getting exhausted out on the road. Bare bones stage setup, to contrast with ZooTV. Just a moderately sized video screen for projecting images behind the band, and an interesting light show. You know, like a normal band with a normal budget.
For the setlist, I'm following the same format as JT30. A few opening songs, then the full album, then an encore. I tried to include a song from every project that I felt was related to Achtung in some way. So there's something from Rattle and Hum, Zooropa, Passengers and Pop. (Slow Dancing is probably the oddest choice, but it has an interesting history, originating in 1989 and then being recorded in 1993 and 1997... it's also a lovely song.) And then I added some fun snippet ideas to some songs. Finally, I also included Streets, Beautiful Day and Vertigo. Cause it's a U2 show. People want to hear those songs.
Setlist:
01. Zooropa
02. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
03. Stay (Faraway, So Close!) / Two Shots of Happy (snippet)
04. Zoo Station
05. Even Better Than the Real Thing
06. One
07. Until the End of the World / Lady with the Spinning Head (snippet)
08. Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
09. So Cruel
10. The Fly / God Part II (snippet)
11. Mysterious Ways
12. Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World
13. Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
14. Acrobat
15. Love is Blindness
16. Last Night on Earth
17. Vertigo / Discotheque (snippet)
18. Desire / Night and Day (snippet)
19. Slow Dancing
20. Your Blue Room
21. Where the Streets Have No Name
22. Beautiful Day / Satellite of Love (snippet)
Notes: Zooropa is full band, full rendition. Love is Blindness is acoustic solo by Edge (I know, this means no guitar solo, but I love Edge's solo version and I think it would be cool if the last song we hear from Bono on Achtung is Acrobat). Slow Dancing is acoustic. The rest are electric (including Stay and Desire).
So what do you think? Is my show idea and setlist a big load of crap? Dirty Day should really have a place in the setlist, shouldn't it? Tell me all about your ideas, I want to hear them too.
