Album cover - Fanning - SoE

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Crap, really? Was this in one of the recent interviews? I know the Apple thing was supposed to be 18 months away, and people were speculating they'd hold back on SOE until then, but was there something more concrete that I missed?

Edit: never mind, I saw it in another thread. Damn!

In Time's forthcoming cover story, Bono hints that the band's next record is "about 18 months away" and will be released under the new file format.

I'm wondering if this is some new ploy to throw us off the scent so they can drop it on us again as a surprise... maybe he's getting heat from Apple for stealing their thunder or some such.

Thank you! So there. The picture is of an 18-turning-19-year-old young man. With the beginnings of - and way more than I or my son could pull off at that age - a beard.

Not a child. Not a young boy.

A young man already past the age of majority, voting, military service, and in my current home province, less than 30 days away from being able to buy alcohol legally.

The end.

My opinion (without having read much of this thread) :

From an art point of view I think it is a beautiful picture.
As a CD cover it is interesting to say the least.
But it can easily be misinterpreted/misunderstood.

They sure know how to keep people talking about them, don't they.

Thanks, I've been wondering about his age. But before I looked it up I decided his actual age isn't really that relevant. In art what's more relevant is how people perceive what they see. The kid's actual age isn't that material; no one is suggesting (well, no reasonable person) that this is child porn or that any laws are being broken.

In other words, however I feel about the image, it wouldn't matter if the kid as 16 or 19. If it's an innocent picture of a father expressing love for his son, it doesn't matter how old the son is. And if the image is intended to suggest something more subversive (not saying that's the case here), then the actual age of the kid in the photo is less relevant than how the image makes people feel.

What's relevant is not how any sick , bigoted or simple minded folk perceive this picture, but that by the time the album is out, anyone who questions it will be met with "that's his 19 year old son you fucking moron"

Serious question: what if the album cover was a similar pose of Bono with his daughter? Would it feel more or less "icky" to some? Would it be defended as vehemently by others?

Yeah, and I personally don't want to share my favorite band with "Dude, that's gay" people anyway. Let them listen to something else.

Good grief. Really? Not even remotely the same thing.

Here's a more appropriate way of asking your question: if it was Ali with Eve, in a similar pose....would anyone even bat an eye?

Lets just settle this shit once and for all: would some PLEBAn kindly tell us how old this dude is, supposedly?

Sent from my ass crack

i dunno, i'm still trying to figure out which one's the kid? :D

and as the father of a young man trying to strike out on his own as much as he can it speaks to me on a very personal level: I can feel myself clinging to him for dear life, not for some mournful feeling of innocence lost (I'm pretty sure he lost much of his already lmao), but because as he does become a man the instances where we can embrace or be close are so few and far between that each one feels like it needs to really count. On that level, this image really speaks very very deeply to me.

 that's exactly where i'm at right now with my eldest, gvox! i'm at that point of desperately wanting to cling onto my baby boy but am having to learn to let him go (to uni lol) and spread his wings... wow, i never knew it would hurt so much, the missing, but the joy i get from watching him spread his wings and fly with confidence is immense... (and this is probably why i relate to and love the image so much)

Well, anyone can see that U2 intended this picture to provoke. That's what good art is supposed to do. Part of the genius of this picture is that it works on so many different levels, and your perception of what you're looking at can change. It challenges assumptions, especially the more you know about it...and most people looking at it won't be sure of who they're looking at.

And are we looking at Larry and his son being Larry and his son, or are the meant to symbolise something else? Larry and his younger self perhaps? Boy to man? Adding texture, for those familiar with modern photography, is how much this pic evokes Maplethorpe's work.

It really is stroke a genius on their part, and of course the band is smart enough, and not small minded enough, for the intention to simply be "Ha ha we got you, you bigoted idiot. It's just our drummer and his son. Get your sick mind out of the gutter." I think they're aiming higher than that.

Really quite surprising from this version of U2 actually, given the relatively tame music the CD actually holds. This is something I could have seen them doing in the 90's, and it's nice to see now.

But people keep saying this is just a touching image of parent/child. If there's absolutely no sexual connection to be made, why does gender matter?

(I don't have an answer for this, I'm just stirring the pot since we're already so far removed from any real discussion about the album cover.)

OK, OK, What matters is the MUSIC.
Everything else comes later.

Those that do not like the new cover with Larry and Elvis, just take a photocopy
of another band picture, scribble some "U2" letters on it and place it over your
new CD Album.
You can always tell everyone else,
that you have the diferent "Mega-Super-Special-Deluxe-Edition" version! :D

theHitman says it like it is...

gvox/mama cass: you're both exactly where I am...my son just turned 18 and he's off to school living with his mom (my ex) and man I am feeling melancholy...miss my little guy...but want him to move on and up...good luck to the both of you.

I hug him like Larry hugs his boy...a little higher up...but I still hold onto him...:)

At least you're being honest about stirring the pot.

Indeed...and your question just points out that the image isn't as clear cut in its meaning as some are making it out to be. There's more to this than "Either you get it or you're sick". People who think that don't understand what art is supposed to do, or why U2 chose this kind of image when there were a million other ways to display parental love.

And if the pic was simple, or just a clear cut photo of innocence, it would not be anywhere near so interesting and no one would be talking about it. U2 knows what they're doing, even if some of us don't.

Yeah well sometimes art is a simple and beautiful statement and isn't necessarily intended to do anything more than make a simple and beautiful statement and sometimes people just can't see that for what it is and so feel the need to create additional controversy where there isn't one..and then continue it endlessly with devils advocate type arguments that are pointless and irrelevant.

Stick that in yer pipe and smoke it...'bout some people don't understand art!
