I think I'm joining this camp as well. Summer just seems like an odd time to release an album.

But really who knows? This whole marketing scheme still boggles my mind.

If it's not going to be Spring, I'd actually prefer Fall to Summer. Fall feels more like a U2 season to me, and if I've waited this long I can wait a little longer.

They may be hungry, but they're also not confident at all. And neither am I.

I was hoping with DM behind the production, we'd get a quick album. No way would he let them procrastinate over and over (something Eno and Danny would allow)

The band talked about going a different direction, something challenging.

Now we've got talk of a back to roots album. We got the same talk for ATYCLB and HTDAAB.

Of course if the songs are excellent, it cancels a lot of the progressive hope out.

But all this talk of relevancy is cringeworthy. You're U2, you'll be relevant. Might not get any radio time, but they have to understand the market right? Paul McCartney is a fucking legend, a Beatle!!!, you'd think when he makes a new song/album he'd have a song or two break through.

He doesn't. U2 time is approaching too. Time to just make great music, put as much out as you can. Enjoy it.

Agreed. The only way I'd prefer Summer is if it's a very "Summer" feeling album. "POP" is probably the closest they've come to that kind of album though.

I know. I can't even tell you what U2 is doing :crack:

Something to consider is no one is releasing an album this summer. Maybe Coldplay? But other than that a new U2 album could be really huge just because the market craves something new by a known band.

Only thing I can tell is based on that article and other interviews the album is pretty much done. There somewhat talking about a tour and such. I think there just letting this 'Ordinary Love' hype go over and then we'll get our album news.

Too much 'Hollywood'/Oscar talk for me. I just want a new U2 album!!

What may astonish more is that the album was actually ready for last December, but the only fact that they had to have a break from the sessions for OL, has led them to tinker more with the songs. I'd say, after the Oscars: hard work and resolution!

Yep. And Staring at the Sun is the quintessential U2 summer song...I can't hear that song and not think about summer. That song has some amazing power to me.

And Bono would seem to agree that it's a summer record:

It (Pop) didn't communicate the way it was intended to. It was supposed to change the mood of that summer [1997]. An album changes the mood of a summer when you walk out of a pub and you have those songs in your head. And you hear them coming from a car, an open window. It changes the mood of the season. Instead it became a niche record.

I actually think most U2 records have a "season".

Maybe it's been done since December? And all the OL/Oscars talk has just delayed the final mixing process?

In which case we should have news soon? :hmm:

All this secrecy is both nervewracking and impressive at the same time. :gah:

BEAL, but their meaning of 'relevance' as I understood it, is not *just* about being on the charts or on the radio. Edge said they want to be on the mouth of people discussing about music, art, young and old, professors and ignorants (as I understand it, even if those are not Edge's words). Which is a double-edged weapon: it's at the same time confidence and lack of confidence, as you say. They feel great, but they want to feel the best. The most talked about.

Hey have you seen your husband's new pic?

I hope after the Oscars, some concrete signal at least. But I don't rule out releases later than Summer, as the others said...

The Edge:

"We don't want to ever be a heritage act," says Edge. "It might happen, but we'll go kicking and screaming into that mode. We feel the place for us to be is part of the conversation of contemporary culture and music and film and everything else, and we don't see the reason why we can't, because it's been possible for various artists in different forms. Frank Lloyd Wright, to the day he died, was designing the most incredible things -- we want to be part of that rather than grow old gracefully."

I agree. To me Zooropa is their most "summery" record. Pop is a little too dark to be pure summer, although it fits the occasion for me.

The album WILL come out before your summer (I'm already in summer  )

Remember, they're playing the (free) World Cup concert in Copacabana Beach, in June (10, I think)

With that the deadline, maybe 2 weeks before that we'll have the album

June for the album, promo tour in summer, proper tour in fall/winter/spring indoors, summer 2015 outdoors, that's my guess. Edge's comments about not having much of a summer holiday this year seemed very telling. I think the album is basically done. If it was to released in December (btw the article is the first source that really talks about a delay) and Ordinary Love interrupted the process, it should be ready by now. Unless they scratch it altogether, I don't see why it should not be released in late spring/early summer.

Apart from the album news or the lack of them I think it's a nice interview without big revelations, but some interesting little background info.

i wouldn't read too much in this article.

it's clearly aimed at the Oscars and designed for a L.A. audience who votes on these things.

it's interesting and a nice snapshot, but it's far from definitive about anything.

also convenient that Edge has bought and destroyed Malibu. puts him very close to Guy.

If the rumors about them playing at the World Cup opening concert are true, a promo tour BEFORE that would benefit them. They wouldn't wanna go play unprepared in front of the biggest audience there is.

The only caption that really belongs on an Adam picture:

"YES, I KNOW I'M JUST LUCKY TO BE HERE"

I've always secretly (or not so secretly) felt a little bad for Adam. It must .be rough to be destined to spend your life as both the plain one and the bass player. It's hard to remember that he is actually a good looking man because he doesn't have the star power of the others. Fortunately he seems to have some offstage charisma and personal gifts that allow him never to feel too left out.

Sorry, Mrs C. He'll always be the plain one to me, even when inexplicably being sexy for a few minutes.

I've never seen Adam as the "plain one" at all! That plain guy thing is only recent.

And any bass player that isn't also singing and/or writing - think McCartney, Sting, Lee etc etc - is sortof in a similar boat of people looking at them like they are less important than the others. However for me the bass is the underpinnings of the song and for many U2 songs if Adam wasnt as consistent and in the pocket as he is Bono would have challenges with the vocals, Im sure, because of all the different stuff Edge has got going on at any given moment.

Honestly..ok Adam is not a top rated bassist but he's no slouch. And when the bass drops out of a U2 song? My goodness the thing falls apart.

I totally agree about his contribution to their sound. It's essential. It's like a whole section of instruments kicks in when he starts to play. But you're right that bassists are kind of the forgotten ones, illustrated tongue in cheek here. Groupie Accidentally Sleeps With Bass Player by joel5121 - Meme Center

As for him being the plain one or not, he really is handsome but I think it would be hard for most guys to stand up beside either Bono or Larry day after day. Edge at least gets to sling an axe, which always helps. But my sense around the fangirl community is that he has usually been thought of as the plain one, kind of a quirk one has to have a taste for. But I hear that he's a lovely human being and has charisma like crazy.
