I've heard this is just U2's method. Rumor has it that "Hawkmoon 269" was so named because there were 269 mixes.

I have heard this reported on here a few times as a rumour. Is that a true rumour, or more a joke?

Because the band had said back in the R&H days that the name came from a road sign they passed on the tour bus. (ie. 269 miles to Hawkmoon).

interesting, as i was listening to nloth this weekend, and the crazy tonight, stand up comedy and boots triumvirate just guts the album for me. Replace these songs with just about anything else they must have recorded during that time and it probably elevates the album from good to great.
agreed!!!

I heard this with in an interview with a engineer who said U2 doesn't know what they're doing (I disagree) and ended up with 269 mixes of the song.

On wikipedia they say this:

"Bono also said that the band mixed the song 269 times. This was thought to be a joke for years until it was recently confirmed by The Edge in U2 by U2, who said that they spent three weeks mixing the song."

 And the whole apple theme of the chorus, sounds like they were out of inspiration "Hey Edge, show me your macbook again" "oi it's not responding, ah well, force quit and move to trash" "BRILLIANT LYRIC LET'S RECORD NAO"

Really do not get why the fuck nobody vetoed that.

My problem with UC are the verses. Something always felt "off" there - it is a pretty ordinary chord progression and the band always felt out-of-sync with their ideas on how to attack it. Maybe they were going for a loose vibe, but it always feels strange to me.

I'm okay with the verse because of the Eno exemption.

They shoulda moved those lyrics to the trash know what I'm sayin'?!?

High five up top

Looking at the tracklist for NLOTH just now I kinda figured something out. For the most part I either can't stand or really like the songs on this album, there are kinda no in betweens for me. There are 3 I really can't stand 7 I really like and 1 I think is one of thier best ever.

So, let the frenzied speculation of what the album will sound like based on Ordinary Love begin.....

I'll get in with a three word appraisal of the song from the audience class bootleg rip we've heard and without getting in to the usual its going to be the BEST/WORST album EVAH for sure, I'll say this about OL (as I'm sure it'll become known as within a few hours)...

"it sounds fresh"

Its very much traditional U2 but has a poppy and lighter feel that they've possibly gone for in the past. Starts out like Electrical Storm but stays light and breezy both in lyrics and sound. Promising though.

It reminds me of Breathe in terms of catchiness and optimism. Gives a great vibe, somewhere I hope they'll release it as a single!

It sounds like they're being restrained by someone near the end where perhaps they'd normally turn the U2 sound up to 11 but instead they keep it quite light & minimal all the way through to the end.

the whole "heart on sleeve" verse is pretty retro U2.. like something out of the mid 80s in terms of Bono's phrasing.. reminds me of Love Comes Tumbling

Thanks. Although, I suppose they could still be making that reference as a joke because it did take so long.

I was 99.9% certain they said at the time of the album it was named based on a road sign.

^^ Reg, have I missed something here, is the whole song available somewhere?

Very, very disappointing song. I really hope this is no indication for the next album. I didn't have high expectations because of their post NLOTH output, but man this is boring.

Disappointing to you or is this a blanket statement for us all? As personally think it's a pretty catchy tune that serves as a soundtrack song very well, but yes they should go all strange and experimental for a song that plays over the end credits of a movie.
