How come? Got some examples? I think he's pretty damn great, not many people can do existentialist lyrics so well.

I just don't really think that highly of his lyrics. For sure, he's done some great, but I don't really see what the fuss is about. I'm not particularly a fan of his use of repetition in his lyrics either (which has been quite a feature of his last decade), but eh. Much of his lyric writing in the 90s, was brilliant.

What Yorke is really good at in my opinion is perfectly aligning the themes and messages of his lyrics with the mood of the instrumental. He does it especially well in some instances, particularly considering the complexity of writing from an existential or isolationist viewpoint. Credit to him. OK Computer showcased this brilliantly, and other songs like House of Cards, Weird Fishies, Knives Out, 2+2=5 are among my favourites. Everything just seems as it should be, in it's right place. The Smiths and Joy Division were really good at this

That said, he's no wordsmith, and I don't find many of his lyrics quotable for any reason. And they're not meant to be. I only wanna hear them in the context of the song. One of the great things about Garvey, Morrissey, Curtis, Bono, Banks and even a Flowers or a Martin is that I'll often find myself plucking a line or a verse from a song and being able to relate it so perfectly to my own circumstances. I like being able to do that.

Martin's hit or miss with that I think. Viva La Vida the song, 42 and half of x&Y are pure nonsense lyrically in my opinion, but other songs, like Shiver, Lost!, Strawberry Swing and Scientist are pretty resonant.

I would argue that a lot of Thom's lyrics are resonant, but you're absolute right about him matching the lyrics and music. That's why Weird Fishes is one of my favourite songs, like, ever.

This song comes out in a little over three hours. I'll probably be asleep by then, but am definitely excited to see what these goofy dudes have in store for us with their new music.

Evrrrrryy teeaardrop is a waaaterfallll
I cry a little bit harder
Evrrrryy teeeaaardropp builds my Bono shrine
I cry until being Chris Martin feels fine

After two listens (BBC Radio 1 played it twice back-to-back):

This is corny. Cornier than, say, Crazy Tonight? Abso-fucking-lutely. The lyrics are, as we know, absolutely atrocious and don't sound much smoother here. It also takes a little bit too long to go anywhere. However, I find this track pretty catchy and likable. It is kind of awful, but when it kicks in, there's enough sparkle and bombast to drag me in. Of course, that makes up, generously, 1/5 of the song. I wish it came back in for another chorus after the drum solo.

This is a more convincing first single than Violet Hill, but a poorer song. It will take off live, but will (hopefully) be an also-ran on the album, much like Crazy Tonight. I have absolutely no idea what sound to expect from the new album based on this song, because it's nothing new for them at all.

Meh, it's probably gonna be the summerhit of 2011 but I don't like it. If this is an indication of their new album then I'll be extremely disappointed.

I didn't love it, but I don't think I hate it. It's cheesy, and I despise the outro. Nothing about it screams massive hit, then again, VLV didn't for me either. I ended up liking the latter quite a bit, so...maybe things will change? I just don't see it yet. A few listens, and I'm just bored. The guitar solo sounds like some 9 year old trying to play Big Country, and that's possibly the most disappointing part at all. I thought these guys were a pretty talented group of musicians?

By Coldplay's standards, it sounds really amateurish. The guitar parts are just terrible, and the drum solo seems stitched on because they couldn't think of a better way to end the song. It almost sounds like a demo/ b side. I'm sure it's not indicative of the album. At least, I sincerely hope not...

I wouldn't say the music is necessarily cheesier than Crazy Tonight, though the lyrics definitely are. It's quite obnoxious in its cheese/let'smakeeveryonecry factor. I don't hate it, but if this is a precursor to the album I'll be a little let down. This is certainly old ground. I think "pretty catchy and likeable and kind of awful" sums it up really well.

I just got an increasing urge to punch Chris Martin in the face. What the hell was that?

It's fine. I don't know what any of you hipster doofuses expect from the band whose first big single was 'Yellow'. Stop being pretentious asses. Complaining that a Coldplay song is "cheesy" is like complaining that American Idol's new winner doesn't write their own music. No shit, Sherlock. Welcome to years and years ago.

Well to be fair if Yellow was "cheesy" then this has a few more layers of cheese than that track. As I said I don't hate it.

Cobbler, I'd like you to go for a long ride on your kangaroo tonight and think deeply about life and whether you'd like to continue living it, or prefer to face the musket.

this post = #winning

It's not horrid, but the vocals on the chorus are grating for some reason. If it had a few less layers to its texture I think it would be better, as it is its trying too hard to be too many things, fitting for CP.

Fix You might be as cheesy as this one but it's a much better song. This sounds like a forced yay-it's-summer-everybody's-happy-song.
