If the Red Sox signed CC, Sox fans would sing a different tune, GAF. That's just how it works. If we sign Lowe, it'll be a mistake, but if they do, great move. It works in reverse as well, of course. CC might not work out for the length of his deal, but anyone that feels like he will not pitch well the next few years is kidding himself.
Actually, with the opt-out clause, the contract is more like 3/69MM with a player option for 4/92MM. Ostensibly CC asked for the opt-out clause "in case he doesn't like New York", but what's going to happen is that if he pitches well for the first 3 years and the economy recovers, he'll opt out and get an even bigger contract. If he sucks/gets injured/etc., he'll just shut his trap and collect the rest of the $92 million.
The initial 3-year contract is fine. The full 7-year contract could hurt towards the end though, and giving up the player option makes it worse.
