Hi girls!
Well guess what? We were waiting for the band to arrive outside of the MCI centre yesterday. There were people lined up on both sides of the driveway, and since I had kind of a crummy spot on the main side, I noticed a small group of people on the other side, and a space right on the barricade, so I moved over there.
No sooner did I move when the guards told all the other people (including poor BAW (Char), and Tara) to move, so in the end there was just one giant group on the side in which I was standing! It was not a long line, but a deep one. About 12 people wide and many layers deep. The group now consisted of Popbellydancer and Tara, and at least 3 other people who have been on stage with Bono.
Eventually their stage manager came out (is it Rocky or Rocco? I forget) and told us the band would not be sound checking, but would arrive sometime between 5 and 6. At that point a large group of GA people left because they had to get back in line. Char was able to get right next to me at that point.
At first I was really optimistic because the group had thinned to less than 20 people. But of course gradually the mob built right up again, there were at least 50 people, probably more.
Suddenly all these police arrived, it was crazy! And then around 6:15ish, we found out the band was finally arriving. And they did with their police escort. I saw Adam in his car, but never did see Larry or Edge, although I think they went in with the main band convoy.
Then Bono's car came up. (Yes, I'm getting to the point of this story!) They stopped and he rolled the window down. The crowd went nuts. He hesitated for a minute, and opened the door. The crowd began to swell forward. "Oh shit!" I thought, my camera isn't ready!!! I was convinced that with all those people, all that screaming and police etc, that he'd breeze right in.
Bono got out of the car right in front of my nose. Char was taking pictures, so she did get a couple of good ones, although she was getting squished and it was hard to take pics. We heard him say "Shhhhhh!" to the crowd because there were some people screaming so loud. "I shouldn't be doing this" he said sheepishly.
He then looked right at me, and Char said she could see the wheels turning in his head. I was holding my picture, which I'd had made into an 8x10 back in Toronto. It is somewhat bent, but still in reasonable shape. I said (over the din), "do you remember me? Your Toronto belly dancer?"
"OF COURSE!!!" he said with genuine enthusiasm, and much to my amazement, he grabbed my hand and pressed it to his cheek for a few seconds. He bent down slightly as he did this. I remember feeling the warmth of his skin against my hand. It was very
and romantic and
He took my picture and now the barricade was starting to shake. With people pushing behind me. He only had a few seconds to spare, but along with his signature he wrote (and said as he wrote because it's quite illegible) "Thanks for the dance!" He still hasn't asked for my name!
Then he signed a few other things, and was rushed inside because I think he was quite late. I can't believe he was so nice as to stop with such a mob there.
Sooooo, I now know that he remembers me, and if I never meet him ever again, I at least have my picture signed. I am of course going to wait around again today and see if I can FINALLY meet Edge, or actually say something to Bono...we shall see!
Oh btw, last night's show was AWESOME. Bono pulled up this adorable little girl for Sunday Bloody Sunday...he got her to sit on the monitor and sang "no more" with her singing it back to him. It was very sweet and made the song seem all fresh again to me.
The WOWY girl did take awhile to get on stage. I thought for sure it was going to be Tara because it was in her general area, but anyway, the girl looked extremely happy to me...although there wasn't much movement. She just smiled and he held her close the whole time. It was nice to see a first timer on stage.
Can't wait for tonight!
