Martinez is a solid signing, but that alone isn't going to have the rest of the division shaking in fear. They need to do more. Couple that with a Dunn signing and, yeah, I'm starting to worry about the Tigers lineup. But even that doesn't say anything about their defense or their pitching (who will close for them?, who do they have behind Verlander in the rotation?).

The Tigers aren't going to sign Dunn. They wanted him or VMart to DH. Dunn wants to play the field (hey Dunn, I want to dunk a basketball, but you know what? I can't).

Defense? The Tigers were in the upper-half of the league in most defensive categories.

Who's behind Verlander? I expect Porcello to have a strong bounce back year similar to the Verlander in his 3rd season. Remember that he threw way more innings than he ever had before in '09. A regression in '10 was not a surprise. Scherzer was one of the better pitchers in the league over the 2nd half of last season. I suspect you'll either see Andrew Oliver or Jacob Turner win the 5th spot in the rotation out of spring training. That means that Coke and Galaraga will be fighting it out for the 4th spot. That doesn't bring warm spots to my heart, but if we can get a .500 season out of our 4s and 5s, I'll take it in this division.

I like what the Tigers have done this offseason. The Benoit signing gives us a great combo in the 8th and 9th innings. The VMart signing gives us some flexibility behind the plate and at DH. They need to add a big bat in LF (if Werth was a lefty, I'd give him my wife). That would allow them to resign Maggs in right. We wouldn't be a powerhouse of an offensive team by any stretch, but I'd feel pretty good about the team.

Oddly enough, if Werth was a lefty, no one in Philly would care he was leaving. All of his appeal to us is that he's the only righty we have in the middle of the order.

I hope that's what he does. Go resign Rivera first, then try to get Lee and a lefty for the bullpen. Let Jeter wait until February until he finds nobody is willing to pay him 2/20 even.

The Sox might give him 2/20 just for spite, imagine him showing up in Yankee Stadium in a Red Sox uni.
I mean, the Sox love wasting money on shortsops anyway, I think they're stll paying Edgar Renteria, Julio Lugo, Orlando Cabrera, Alex Gonzalez and Rick Burleson.

imagine him picking up his 3000th hit in Fenway against the Yankees? Or even better, in yankee stadium in a big spot with a hit that drives in a late go ahead run?

the yanks have signed away many former red sox legends... have the sox ever taken one the other way?

As hilarious as this would be, I'm pretty sure it's not worth $80 million.

Overwhelmed by the Marlins being able to finally spend!

Beinfest has done a superb job fixing the pitching woes from last season. Tons of Marlins fans are upset by the Uggla trade, although I'll tell you Infante is really overlooked. Especially if he can put up the same numbers from last season. The defense is much needed, and they're going to have a great young core with Stanton/Morrison/Coghlan/Dominguez. Not to mention Hanley and J.J. Oh, I can dream on getting Upton in CF without getting rid of Morrison, cant I? CF seems to be the only true hole, although Beinfest sounds content with *gulp* Chris Coghlan at CF.

Wouldn't be a catastrophe, but the Yankees would match that easily. They're much more worried about the years than the money, which is wise.

you'd assume, especially to avoid having him go to boston.

with all this jeter talk, everyone's forgetting about mariano... who wants a 2 year, 18 per deal, and is actually coming off a good season and will be in demand by many.

I think Rivera will settle for something like 2/36. His contract negotiations will be much easier than Jeter's. Give him 3 years if he wants.

I bet Javy will have a sub-4 ERA with the Marlins after his awful season with the Yankees. That is, if he recovers some of his velocity. It was hilarious at one point when the stadium gun was classifying his 83 mph fastball as a change up.

I think what most Marlin fans are excited about are Javy's AL-NL splits. Favorable pitching in the NL, to say the least.

But in reality, Vazquez is part of the bigger picture.

Johnson-Sanchez-Vazquez-Nolasco-Volstad

That rotation (however all righties) is miles upon miles better than last season. And all we did was add one pitcher.

Honestly though, reconstructed the bullpen. If I was the other teams though, I'd be afraid of the Marlins bats above all else. Not a weak point other than the unfilled CF position at the moment. And John Buck lol.

Let the madness begin! Alright, who is getting inducted into the HOF this year? I think Roberto Alomar will get in now that he's served his one year punishment for the 1996 spitting incident. As for anyone else, who knows?
