I think Cross Fired ended at the right time. Nothing went on after 81 Tour musical wise for the Stones. Everything they have done after 81 has been a 'reflect upon' the glory days. Though I do enjoy Voodoo Lounge

Seriously, though, they should have at least done a brief summary from 1982 to the present. After 1985, Mick and Keith were estranged from each other for 4 years. When they reunited for Steel Wheels, they appeared stronger and more focused than ever before. Plus, their studio work was pretty solid. Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon all kicked some serious ass. Even A Bigger Bang was decent.
