Question conversion software

For those of you who have experience with converting various audio/video files from one format to another, what software do you use or recommend.

For audio, Foobar2000, available for free at foobar2000.org

I don't do much converting with video, but there are tons of free converters out there. I just d/l a new one when I need it.

then click on download and use

finally you have to scroll all the way down and choose one download link

I also have to make sure these programs aren't riddled with spyware or cause problems with other programs so if you know about these things as well I would appreciate the info.

Foobar will have no problems with spyware etc. It's a legitimate program that runs well and doesn't use a lot of resources. It's also an audio player that will play FLAC as well as mp3 files. I know quite a few people using it, and I highly recommend it.
