NLOTH Singles Chart Watch

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

The Dirty South Radio Mix went out to US radio on June 12. I question how many Rock and AC stations are going to play a radio edit of a dance remix, though.

Anyone seeing it on any airplay charts? I don't see it in the Top 40 of any of the Mediabase charts. Magnificent is down from 4 to 6 on AAA, -81 spins.

Are you sure that remix went out to U.S. radio? I saw where it was given to DJ's in Australia, where "Dirty South" has a following, but what radio format would play it in the States? I listened to it briefly before concluding it was horrible. A single edit of Crazy Tonight, or even the album cut, might do OK on Triple A, Adult Top 40, and perhaps BB's new Rock Top 50 chart, where Magnificent drops to 39 this week. I really hope that U2, or their management, don't actually believe that the D.S. remix would actually get any airplay in the U.S., and if they actually do, then it's just another nail in the coffin for the botched singles strategy for NLOTH.

One other note on Magnificent...it is down to #15 this week on the Top European Airplay chart...but for a song that "flopped" since it wasn't downloaded, it's had quite a run on the radio. It's also up to #11 on the Top 20 songs chart for Asia (measures airplay, video play, and sales in all of SE Asia) this week, while Boots falls off that same chart this week after a Top 5 run.

I have some questions:

What was "Get On Your Boots" peak position on the following Billboard charts?

Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart
Modern Rock Tracks Chart
Adult Top 40 Tracks Chart

What was "Magnificents" peak position on the following Billboard charts?

Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart
Modern Rock Tracks Chart
Adult Top 40 Tracks Chart

Billboard's July 4 Edition

Magnificent up from 8 to 5 on "Hot Dance Club Play"
Magnificent up from 9 to 5 on "Hot Dance Singles Sales"
Magnificent up from 14 to 11 on "Hot Singles Sales"
Magnificent down from 4 to 6 on Adult Rock/AAA
Magnificent down 1 spot to 15 on "Euro Hot 15 Radio Airplay Chart"
Magnificent down 2 spots to 20 on "Top 100 Hits online" chart

I believe Magnificent peaked at #23 on Adult Top 40; #18 on Modern Rock; #79 on BB Hot 100.

whatever happened to that Magnificent single that was supposed to be available at Best Buy? Did that ever happen?

It was available. In fact, I made a new thread about it here.

Also, you can see the single at Best Buy here. I ordered mine from Best Buy and it came on the day the single was released. :hyper: However, the site says the single is now back-ordered. :(

If Best Buy continues to be delayed, Amazon.com is also offering it here. They even have the 2-track and EP versions of the single available, although both of those are imports.

On the website "World Top 50 Albums", the have updated several of the world/region singles charts for the period June 15-21.

World Top 100 Singles: Magnificent jumps back up from 48 to 32
Asia Top 20 Singles: Magnificent jumps from 16 to 11, while Boots falls off the chart
Eurochart Top 100 Singles: Magnificent hanging on at #96

Crazy Tonight started showing up on AAA Rock playlists this week, too. In looking at the mediabase playlist data for last week shows that in some markets, Magnificent is at or near the top of # of spins in a number of different cities...while it's nowhere to be found in others. Crazy Tonight is on about 7 radio station playlists that I could find...and Stand Up Comedy was on 3 radio playlists, along with Moment of Surrender.

I would not be surprised if Crazy Tonight debuts on the Triple A/Adult Rock Top 40 this week or next, but that won't really make a difference in boosting album sales. If U2 will do some song promotion...makes some good b-sides available...and get a creative video out for this single in short order, maybe it has a chance to be a modest hit. If they follow the same strategy, or lack thereof, used for Magnificent...forget about it.

Crazy is not my favorite song, but it is the most radio friendly song from NLOTH. If U2 want the kind of commercial success they enjoyed with HTDAAB, they'll promote Crazy heavily to help boost album sales along with the tour. If they just want to make great music and let fans discover it on their own, then they'll basically let a few radio stations decide if they want to play it, and instead put all their effort into playing live for U2360.
I like watching charts and want U2 to do well on them, but at the same time, NLOTH is the album I'VE been hoping for, so either way, I'm happy to be a fan for some 25+ years who thinks NLOTH is a masterpiece.

good job, as always. Remind me to buy you a Duff if i ever get to meet you in person.

Crazy debuted today on mediabase "Adult Rock Top 40" at #37, with 16 stations already playing it and that's +11 from just Tuesday of this week. Magnificent is still in the Top 10 on this chart, although it has peaked. It's also hanging on the "Rock Top 40" mediabase chart at #23 with a slight gain in spins.

Its easy to think how stupid the radio is, or that there's some sort of conspiracy since if anything U2 has done this decade that would scream collossal hit. But Viva La Vida is pretty much the ONLY rock song we've seen take the world by storm in years (and that only happened after an iTunes commercial), the only thing that tops singles charts nowadays are hip-hop songs featuring a million artists, and one new female singer after another. It should have saved rock music on the charts, but it doesn't surprise me that it didn't.

Seriously, aside from VLV and a few weeks of Maroon 5's "Makes Me Wonder" and Nickelback's "How You Remind Me", not a single #1 song on the Hot 100 is a rock song, not even pop 'rock'. On a side note, having gone and checked to back myself up, I'm proud to say I avoid the radio and TV enough that I've heard pretty much none of those songs since like 2003/4. But if garbage commercial rock doesn't even sell in this loop-based, ringtone-oriented, no understanding of artistry culture we have, there's no way real talent is breaking through anytime soon. Remember when the Beatles were the biggest thing going, well they actually brought creativity and sonic art along with their cross-demographic popularity, think something like that will ever happen again?

Billboard's weekly update:
Magnificent up to #3 from #5 on Hot Dance Club Play Top 40
Magnificent hangs in at #29 on Top Hits online chart
Magnificent down from 3 to 7 on Dance Singles Sales
" " " " " down from 11 to 17 on Overall Singles Sales Chart
As of today, Magnificent at #10 on Triple A/Adult Rock Top 40, while
Crazy Tonight is up to #33 on that same chart...moving up fast
Magnificent still hanging on at #15 on Euro Singles Airplay Chart
Magnificent at #14 on Top 20 songs (airplay + sales) is Asia

I just saw the new BlackBerry ad with Crazy Tonight on TV.

It's not quite as iconic as the Vertigo iPod ad, but maybe it will give the single a bump.

Saw it twice yesterday on ESPN, then NBC, Wimbledon Coverage. Perfect length, slick graphics, great sound...where has this been for NLOTH? Very much all that's needed to help with promotion. Hope it's not too little, too late. The fascination with the tour will keep U2 in the news, but will it remind folks they have a new album out? We'll see.

Crazy Tonight up to #25 on Adult Rock/AAA

Magificent at #40 on World Singles Chart
Magnifent at #68 in Germany
Magnificent falls from #15 to #18 in France
Magnificent holds at #14 on Asia Top 20

Thank God my ATL has taste.

I was in Atlanta visiting family over the weekend, and I heard Magnificent, Crazy Tonight, and Stand up Comedy. While all those songs, plus Moment of Surrender and Boots, are being played on U.S. radio, they have not been mainstream hits so far, anyway.

It's amazing just how large the market is for country music on the radio. It explains the success of Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, etc., as they have crossed over to Mainstream Pop while also being in heavy rotation on country music. Same for Lady Gaga, Black Eyed-Peas, etc., who have a strong presence in R&B/Rythmic formats (almost as big as country music), and benefit from mainstream Pop, too.

Coldplay managed to get one big hit off of their latest album, which started out on Modern Rock, Triple A, etc., then crossed over to mainstream and adult Top 40. Basically, U2 had done the same thing with Vertigo and Beautiful Day with their previous two albums, resulting in massive commercial success. NLOTH may not have that "one song" to become a radio summer anthem, or crossover hit, it is still, IMHO, the best of the last 5 U2 studio albums going back to Zooropa. Still hoping the tour and perhaps a remaining single can give it a more universal appeal (and sales numbers), but if not, it's still doing very well relative to the year 2009.

Crazy Tonight is the best get for a big single off NLOTH. Its catchy and has that feel good vibe. I don't see it making a big splash on pop radio, but I do see Modern Rock, and Hot AC picking up on it, which may translate into Top 40 playing it. Downloads can also help as well.

The Blackberry ad appears to be having some impact in the US. Right now "Crazy Tonight" is U2's 5th most downloaded song. When I checked yesterday it was hovering around #20. And that's with almost no radio airplay.

And on the Mediabase charts...

I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight...

Triple A
#20 up from 37 last week
196 plays (+108)

Aw shite. False alarm. I think I was in the Spanish store when I saw this. It's actually #19 in U2 songs...

Magnificent remix up from #3 to #2 on Dance Club Play Chart (#1 next week?)
Magnificent remixes up from 7 to 3 on "Hot Dance Singles Sales"
" " " " up to 15 from 17 on "Singles Sales" chart
Magnificent at #14 on AAA per Billboard, #15 per mediabase
Crazy Tonight up to #17 on Mediabase, should debut on Billboard next week
Magnificent down from 32 to 37 on Eurochart

The ad just started! I haven't even seen it yet (will it even play in CA?). So give it time.

It's playing in California - I saw it about three times last weekend. Once during Wimbledon, don't recall what it was during on the other instances, but it's worth noting that I've watched very little television over the last week and still caught it several times. Might be location too - Los Angeles for me.

IMO Crazy Tonight will give NLOTH a longer tail. The Blackberry ad is a killer ad and if it gets as much play as the Vertigo ad I think radio will start playing U2 some more... you know the same thing happened to MJ when he released Invincible, by many accounts after his death people are considering it heavily underrated, but it had next to no promotion by Sony and radio wasn't interested in playing music by a 40+ year old MJ and therefore it didn't do nearly as well as his previous work... had he had an iPod style ad flooding the airwaves with You Rock My World I have a feeling it would've done a lot better.

I don't think its just that an ad = better sales, but good music that is underrepresented benefits greatly from something like this.

I think the CT ad is much more iconic than the iTunes ad because the visuals are unique to the band and to this particular ad, and has a flavor of U2's actual tour and live performance. The impact of having an iTunes ad is bigger, but the actual ad is a lot better.

Magnificent or Breathe with an iTunes ad could have been huge... too bad they're kind of killing their relationship with Apple.
