Just cracked open my Region 2 Luis Buñuel boxed set and watched Tristana for the first time.

Damn, that motherfucker was good.

Though I've seen like five Buñuel films, only one of them (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgoisie) is in this 8-disc set, so this is going to be a real trip.

AMAZING.

BTW, did you know that Ponyo is completely hand-drawn? First Ghibli film since Kiki's Delivery Service that has no computer animation.

Up can suck it.

You're damn straight.

Supposedly the first 10 minutes features something like 10,000 individually hand-drawn sea creatures. Fucking ridiculous.

If all goes according to plan, my friend and I should be seeing 4 showings in NYC this tuesday: Tetro, Moon, Peter Chan's "The Warlords" as part of the New York Asian Film Festival, and finally The Limits of Control if we're still functional... and not broke.

Nice haul.

Caught I Love You, Man at the dollar theater today. Pretty light, inoffensive comedy, and Paul Rudd's always so gosh-darned likable.

Soderbergh must have found an ingenious script-writer for that thing because I've read that book and never in a million years would I have deemed it a potential feature length film.

Here are some pics from Tim Burton's upcoming Alice in Wonderland movie:

The Hath!

You'd think Soderbergh would have enough clout to get something like that made at this point in his career.

I don't think there are words for how awful that Alice movie looks. Tim Burton, you're so pathetic.

As a baseball fan, it's hard for me to imagine the book and story becoming compelling cinema. I'd still like to see Lance's boy pull it off though. Here's hoping he and Benji Button can get a studio with some cojones and make something damn cool.

Man, you said it. Those photos aren't doing this project any favors. I'm disappointed in the Hath. Couple this with the weekend I had and I just might be moving on to a new Annie.

Impy's good friend Anne Hathaway as the White Queen

I wouldn't mind painting her white, if you get my meaning.

Speaking of the Hath, was Passengers straight to DVD or some shit? I never even heard of the damn thing until recently.

Passengers was Direct-to-DVD. I remember hearing rumblings that it was going to come out theatrically last Fall, but it looked like shit anyway.

The film was released in 125 theaters on October 24, 2008 and earned $172,544 on the opening weekend. As of February 2009, the film grossed total of $2,763,289: $292,437 from domestic location and $2,470,852 from overseas locations.

Sounds like it certainly called for this treatment:

I'd say mine Hathy deserves better, but between learning guitar for her piece of shit boyfriend and making this ridiculous Alice movie, we're kind of going through a rough patch.

Yikes.

I'm feeling pretty torn on this Alice movie, especially with these terrible stills.

Christ.

What the hell happened to Burton after Ed Wood? The only "great" film he's made since then has been Big Fish, and I kind of enjoy Sleepy Hollow. Apart from that, it's just indulgent, art direction-heavy quirk porn.

He really fell off the map after Ed Wood. I rewatched Big Fish last week and I really do enjoy that one (this may or may not have to do with my Cotillard crush). But everything else... yikes.

I do think Pee-wee's Big Adventure is his best film. I'm completely unafraid to admit it.

Ed Wood is tops for me, quality-wise, but Pee-wee is my favorite as well. I brought it to a National Honors Society event where we had to babysit some kids. No one showed up, so I just watched Pee-wee by myself for a solid 90 minutes. It was fantastic.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I can't believe this Alice movie is happening.

I was initially psyched because of the cast, and if anyone could do quirky whimsy, it's Burton. Too bad no one's there to reign him in anymore.

Tarsem would've been a better choice.
