We call them brollys (sometimes) in the UK, only time Ive heard bumbershoot was in The Aristocats.

My grandmother (dad's mother) called them bumbershoots. Her father was an immigrant from Switzerland in the late 1800's, so who knows where the word came from?

I just think it's a cool word!

My dad called them bumbershoots jokingly, that's how I knew the word. I know there are a number of words for umbrella though.
