True, very true. Being a new artist today is nearly impossible, like you said. There's bands like Okkervil River, who have been together for close to 10 years, and are just now getting recognized outside of the small indie scene, and even now, they aren't making much money. Their lead singer worked at a video store while releasing albums until just a few years ago, when they started gaining popularity. It's really too bad, because all that this situation does is stifle artists' creativity and ability to reach an audience.

Yeah so many indie bands must struggle a lot to get by, I mean I love the Dresden Dolls and practically worship their music but they're not well off or anything, I mean their second album was a success in indie terms but they basically just made rent out of it and have to tour their asses off to get by. And then there's the indie bands who release an album every year where you just get the feeling if they sat down and tried to record an album properly without rushing it'd be amazing

Yeah, I know. It's crazy. I'm glad I'm not a musician...but it's hard, since this all effects me as a consumer and a (budding  ) academic on pop music...and I don't really think that anybody has any idea of what to do or what can be done to salvage the integrity of the artists, while still allowing them to make at least a moderate living.

You know, if the RIAA had embraced the internet rather than fight it, things might be VERY different today.

Right? It's insane...because now it's far too late for them to come around, and considering most of their current tactics (even with stopping the lawsuits against people who pirate), it's not looking like they even WANT to figure out a way to use the internet to their advantage.

Exactly. We spent a lot of time talking about this in Business of Media, and I'm not trying to pretend to be some expert, but the RIAA fucked up by making itself the enemy of angsty teenagers everywhere

 Yeah, I'm certainly not an expert either, especially because I find studying the music industry to be one of the most boring parts of pop music scholarship , but I think it's painfully obvious to everyone, the RIAA included, that they messed up big time by trying to fight piracy instead of developing good alternatives to it and staying tied to optical media.

If I had had the opportunity to use Napster the way I use it now? I never would've illegally downloaded in the first place, and I wouldn't be so used to getting music free either. I mean, I doubt the $12.95 I pay a month goes a long way towards feeding all these bands out there, but I have to believe that if all the people who illegally download were paying $12.95 a month instead, that would be a HUGE jump in the right direction. well, whatcha gonna do, ya know?

Meanwhile, I made great leaps and strides in the field of Lighting and Design today, then I had to go to work. It's time to get back to all that L&D nonsense, I suppose :(. Why on earth do I have a final tomorrow? :crack:

Exactly! My biggest issue with buying records is that nearly nothing goes to the artist, and that's completely normal business practice. I don't want to purchase something that is essentially only benefiting the big corporation behind the artist, when I'm trying to hear their music (and, when we get down to it, even putting music on CDs, vinyl, whatever, is taking it out of its original element, which was not meant to be reproduced as it is now with recording...but anyway...). If I could be guaranteed that the money I'm paying for music was actually going directly to the artist, minus the very basic amount that needs to go to the label, I'd buy music much, much more often.

:hi5: At least you got somewhere with it! You have a final already tomorrow?

I'm sitting in the library trying to get a paper written, and it's at least starting to form, but it's still going to be awhile until it's finished.

That right there is the fact, if the money were going to the artist and not a bunch of corporate bullshit, I'd be more inclined to pay the $14.99 sticker.

Yeah! Finals week isn't ACTUALLY until next week, but jackass decided to have our final tomorrow because he's lazy. OH and our final project in his class is due WEDNESDAY. Yes, thank you for putting BOTH of them not only the same week, but 48 hours apart as well.

You GET that paper done, you!

 And, I have a feeling that's how a lot of true music fans feel. I don't know about the majority of people in general, and a lot of people probably wouldn't pay for it anyway, but I think people who really do care about music would do it if that were the case.

 I hate it when professors do that! As if they don't know that these last couple weeks are hellish, and they just need to add to it. I've always vowed that when I become a professor, that is the kind of thing that I will not be doing.

 It's not actually due until Thursday, but I'm trying to get it done and turned in during class on Tuesday so I can focus on the other papers I still have to write. :crack:

Yeah. But, like I said, I feel far more legit these days thanks to Napster lol.

At least I feel better about the final project now, the Donnie Darko set. I kind of had a stroke of genius this morning while I was studying for the final, and things are much calmer now. Now if only I felt the same way about the exam! :yikes:

I completely understand that. I wish I had the ability to do that, myself. Like I wish I'd finished this project a week ago so I could just focus on the final, but, I just can't, I've never been able to do work in advance.

 That's good, I still can't bring myself to even do that. I'm a bad music consumer. :reject:

Awesome! Those moments are always nice, when you all of a sudden "get it."

 I usually don't either, but I've got that Okkervil River paper, which I've been working on for the entire semester, so I've got more invested in it, and another one that I still need to write. Plus, I've got some ulterior motives for getting this one in particular done early. :shifty:

You really should give it a go, they've got such a wide selection, and this way I don't have to waste space on my comp, since it's all streaming. Though it drives me crazy that they don't have some stuff....Like Peter Gabriel :grumpy:. But I think that's something to do with Peter Gabriel, because I remember expecting his stuff not to be available. Like The Beatles.

Thanks, now I just need to figure out "What an Art Director Does".

Oh really? :shifty:

I'm listening to the new Depche Mode finally :hyper:

:hmm: That is nice. Especially since my iTunes library has ballooned up to 90+GB. :uhoh: Aww, I love Peter Gabriel! I already have most of his CDs though, so that wouldn't be a huge loss.

Is that your final?

 Yeah, basically, I'm 98% sure that the teacher (who's a grad student) has a thing for me, and I feel the same way, so I'm trying to get this done so that I can ask him out for coffee on the last day of class. :shifty:

How is it? I haven't heard it either. :hmm:

All of my PG is on Vinyl, and my record player isn't working right now, so it's frustrating.

Ha, it's the name of the book that most of my final is going to be over.

Oh snap! Well, SERIOUSLY good luck with that :D.

So far so good. But I need to pause now to put my laundry in the dryer and get some dinner.

Ah, yeah, that would be annoying.

 Got it, that sounds like an awfully large concept.

:D Thanks!

 Good to hear.

Yep, I was going to rip them all to the computer, but I've got to get some extra money and buy a new needle first.

Yes...Yes it is . There's other stuff as well, but, it's from the first section, damn cumulative final, I wish I remembered what was on the first exam XD.

Well, I'm gonna head out for the night, not only do I need to study, but i'm exhausted as well, I've been up since 5 am.

Bah, it's easy! Once you rip them, your torrenting program will make the torrent file and everything for you. Then all you have to do is fill out the upload page, and open up the torrent in your program.

Maybe I'll do it then

I'm flipping through channels on tv right now, there's nothing on but porn, Shaft and people with stereos for heads and bad music videos. Late night tv is interesting

 that's a random collection of shows...but, yes, late night tv is always bizarre. We get lots of infomercials here though.
