Metallica has been a comercial band ever since they signed with a record company back in 1983!
U2 released its first album in the United States in January 1981. Metallica released its first album in the United States in July 1983. U2 in comercial terms is 2 and half years older than Metallica, not much at all.
Metallica is slightly ahead of U2 in album sales in the United States, although that will probably change with the release of HTDAAB. The United States is one of the few countries in the world where Metallica is equal or sold more than U2 when it comes to albums. Metallica sales more than 55% of its albums in the United States. U2 on the other hand has a much broader fan base around the world and the United States only accounts for around 35% to 40% of U2 sales.
Metallica has not reached the 100 million mark in total Album sales although they are getting close and no doubt many report that they have since they are so close to the figure. U2 on the other hand have sold over 135 million albums.
But what really matters here is how much has your latest product sold.
St. Anger has sold 4.5 million albums worldwide.
ATYCLB has sold 12 million albums worldwide.
In the United States, ATYCLB has sold 4.2 million
St Anger has sold 2 million
In Europe, ATYCLB has sold over 4 million
St. Anger has sold over 1 million.
Being the best hard rock or Heavy Metal band is all well and dandy, but U2 is a far more diverse band that can play a much greater variety of music. Once again though, this is all opinion.
Queen may be more popular than U2 in some area's and regions, but overall Queen never achieved the album sales or concert ticket sales that U2 did in most markets.
Pink Floyd has a large healthy catolog of album sales, but ever since the late 1980s after U2 released the Joshua Tree, U2 have been the more popular band in terms of albums sales and concert ticket sales.
Rolling Stones have been the most popular live act since 1975. But ever since 1983, when it comes to selling new albums, the Rolling Stones have not done well, which is why overall they are no longer one of the most popular bands.
The Beatles have not been a band since 1970, but of course, they will always be the #1 band in terms of popularity. No band around today is even close to them when it comes to album sales. The Beatles do not have much of a touring history to compare to others, but then again, they were the first rock band to even play in a football stadium.
