3 Irishmen and a Dutchman Walk Into A Sphere - General Discussion Thread Part III

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Yeah, that was weird. Part of the song with the “wrong” graphics and costumes combined with drone footage of the whole show. Kinda…halfhearted.

That was not good. My husband was pissed and bummed. He dramatically proclaimed that he is far less excited for the show. :eyeroll:

So how have they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this time? Was it not just the normal performance from the show?

It was like a music video instead of an actual single performance of the song. I get it but weird. Wish they just did Zoo Station.
My U2 fanatic friend, who's never been to the Sphere, thought the Grammys thing was cool.

However, it was definitely awesome to see the Fly shades on!

It started making us watch the outside of the sphere for long enough to wonder if we never got to go inside (they were doing the interior screen stuff on the outside of the bldg), and it was the Zoo Station visuals, and then we got to go inside and they showed graphics from various other songs via drone footage interspersed with what may have been the band playing Atomic City to an empty house, and halfway through the song they stopped to introduce a grammy. So it was just...partial everything, no full on performance.

The entire show has been spoiled on YouTube, I don’t see why they couldn’t have done a full on standard song with drone fly-bys and actual live crowd energy. This struck me as a more of a an ad to the artists to sign up to play the venue.

It's also a little weird they didn't use anyyyyy of the visuals / performance from Atomic City

I guess it was an ad for the three new Atomic City remixes by David Guetta too.

I'm guessing that the Grammy producers controlled the whole thing, it wasn't well done obviously. Maybe U2 and their management don't care because they have sold out their residency. At this point they probably couldn't care less about the Grammy Awards either.

if they wanted to show off the visuals - they should have just shown a full performance of The Fly.

if they wanted to show off Atomic City - they should have just flown their asses to LA (which, let's be honest, they're probably already there) and performed the song live in person.

this was just... not it.

Hmm, yeah, ok, I see what you all mean now. Its trying to be everything and just ends up being a bit of a mess as a result.

It had the same feeling of live I felt watching gronk kick that FG last year during the Super Bowl that was filmed in such a way that it didn’t look real or live and I thought the kick was good but the ad said he missed.

Very underwhelming/off excecution last night

Good news. Went to the show Saturday and was on Adam's side about 3 people back. Awesome experince, never been that close. Band sounded so good (even better than early Oct show), especially Bono. Wife loved the show too. Was blown away by the energy & screen. Few things:

-Not a fan of new UV Light presentation. Seems like a quick fix.

-Elevation needs some effect/display.

-Being GA & seats are 2 different experinces. Worth to do both if possible.

-Being on the floor at a U2 show and ordering Guiness from waitreses is pretty sweet way to do a concert.

-Wish people were more quiet during the Acoustic/B Side set. Me & my wife had to step away towards back after All I Want Is You. From people yelling 'Play Sunday Bloody Sunday' or 'Bono!! I love you!!' we had to get away, Haha

From the NY Times Best And Worst Moments of the Grammy Awards

Worst Commercial For Las Vegas -U2

U2 played its rather rote latest single, “Atomic City,” to give the first-ever televised glimpse inside the Sphere, James Dolan’s state-of-the-art, $2.3 billion Las Vegas arena. But the venue’s majesty was difficult to capture on TV, and the director of the pretaped segment tried to make up for it by endless swooping, disorienting camerawork that left me feeling nauseous. They may as well have been performing “Vertigo.”

What time did you arrive/line up to get 3 people back on Adam's side? I have seen reports in a few forums that the GA capacity has been increased for the 2024 shows (I could not find an official source for this info). Can anyone confirm?

I am attending on 3/1 and was planning to skip wristbands and arrive at doors open - should I reconsider if the floor is more packed now?

it certainly looks more crowded. i was there opening weekend and it was downright roomy on the sides of the stage.

either way - even if they pack it in more - it's not a big space. much much smaller than, say, your average arena GA floor. so even if you hung by the back? you're still not that far from the stage.

first night we hung a little further back - closer to the VIP area and the vom that goes back to the bar/bathrooms. second night i moved closer to the side stage on adam's side. was not disappointed with either view.

Depends on whether you care if you're near the front of the stage (line up) vs. closer to the back of the stage (don't need to line up).

I got wrist band #300 on Saturday and actually ended up on the rail on Adam's side, albeit just past halfway down the side of the stage towards the back. So basically parallel to where Adam stands most of the show. Stage is pretty high so being on side rail made seeing Edge challenging, my normal view of him was from the waist up at best and lost him without stretching and craning when he went to front corner for solos. Wife (being vertically challenged) basically only saw Edge when he came to Adam's side.
You enter by the Red Zone which is on Edge's side. The first folks (with magic marker on their hands) all go to either the front or to Edge's side. Adam's side definitely fills up last. I was shocked when I turned the corner and saw rail spots still open. After my wife and I grabbed the 2 most forward spots available, there was still room for 5 more folks to take the balance of the Adam side rail all the way to the back corner.

And as Headache mentioned, they are definitely selling more floor tix in 24 than they did in 23 (maybe the difference is the $25 college student tix). Floor was pretty full, may have been a bit of open space back towards the bar, but not a lot.

And show was awesome. Bono in the fly shades just oozed swagger like he hasn't in decades.
