New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
No new news. TBD if they make any notable changes for the 2024 shows. Also TBD what this place looks like after the software change. I MISS THE APP

Probably old news to you all, but I read a rumour they were offered to do more shows but declined.

Which either means they want to move on to whatever project they have up their sleeves next, or just tired of living in Las Vegas (hellhole I know).

2035 it is.....

I do wonder how Larry's recovery is going. Was the last update about him that he needed surgery in 2024, or was done with surgeries and this year will be about recovery and if he's a go / no-go for any potential new album tour?

the source is suspect, and they've been living in LA.

alas - we've know they had a 2 year option for a while now. they could keep going through august of 2025 if they wanted to.

we'll see if they're really done done, or if they're going to take a break and come back in the fall again.

i think it all depends on Larry's health.

It’s entirely possible that ending the residency is a good sign for new music. They could have just kept it rolling and cashing the cheques.
maybe... we'll see.

i for one don't think that they're done at Sphere - i think they just want a break to see where they are.

the social account - las vegas locally... isn't exactly know for breaking big news.

if it's not coming from the LVRJ, or even from that twit VitalVegas, i'd take it with a HUGE grain of salt.

If they’re going to properly tour next year, they’re likely done for this show/presentation. And part me thinks they don’t want to follow whatever Phish attempts with their established AB show. I could see them coming back for another go in a few years under a different concept. They’re older, it’s easier and probably more financially lucrative to not deal with a full traveling crew and stage apparatus, etc.

On Apple and streaming again.

No physical release. So thanks again for nothing, u2.
They’re going to put out a specialty format (blu ray audio disc) when they couldn’t be bothered to put the 2018 E+I tour out in a standard hi def video format (disc OR digital!)?
Not a chance.

Glad they end their worst episode of career soon and get them with their feet on the ground again. Back to the music, with Larry. Back to Europe and hopefully releasing relevant things again and accesable for ALL fans instead of releasing for moneyprofits like Apple.

you mean the universally well received turn at the most technologically advanced arena ever created that has almost made people forget about the apple episode you refer to?

that's their career worst episode?

oh i don't think they're coming back to do this show - but i do think they'll be back.

when? that all depends on Larry. if he's still months away - and Dolan still doesn't have a new act? yea - i could see them returning in the fall.

re: Phish... i actually don't think they'll utilize the screen as well as U2 did. from what i understand a lot of what they do in a live setting, from a lighting standpoint, is very much improvised on the spot. how exactly they manage this at Sphere - which lends itself to shows being scripted - is anyone's guess.

i don't think they'll have the TIGHT NARRATIVE driven videos that U2 have used.

More people are streaming than buying physical media. It’s faster, easier and cheaper for record labels to put the Atmos mixes on the streaming platforms.

With regard to accessibility, Atmos mixes are available on both Apple and Amazon at no extra charge for the existing subscribers, and I’d wager there are more people with an Apple TV or Amazon firestick (currently the only ways to stream Atmos in proper surround to a home theatre system) than there are with active blu ray players.

While I’d love physical releases of the hi res mixes (Atmos streaming is actually a lossy format), it isn’t going to be a selling point for this band. They don’t have the hardcore audiophile fanbase of, say, Porcupine Tree. Also, They’re Dumb and Lazy.

I'm with @Headache in a Suitcase.... if Larry really is 6 or 12 months off being able to get back to drumming properly, then that rules out an album or tour next year so I could see them going back to the Sphere to do something else.

Most people don't even understand what the difference is between the already existing high res lossless files and this new Atmos mix.

By most people I mean me. Somebody please explain to me
Hi-res lossless: Think of it as a digital equivalent of full resolution analog sound (sometimes referred to as master audio). No loss of audio information via compression or use of lossy format like mp3. This is usually stereo although there have been a few mono releases. Bluetooth introduces lossy compression into the chain so if you’re playing lossless through AirPods or similar, you’re not getting the full effect.

Atmos: 7.1 or 9.1 multi-channel audio utilizing a surround sound setup - typically front L/R, center, surround L/R, ceiling mounted or ceiling-aimed “reflective” height L/R and a subwoofer (the .1 in this equation), with optional rear surround L/R (this takes it from 7.1 to 9.1). Currently, this is only delivered in true discrete channel fashion via an Apple TV (with Apple Music) or an Amazon Fire stick/cube (with Amazon Music) through an AVR connected to all those separate speakers though I’ve been told that the Sonos Atmos playback is also pretty impressive. Atmos on headphones is a phased effect that, to me, sounds like shite.

TLDR
Hi-res lossless = “this sounds great on my home stereo or wired headphones”

Atmos = “this sounds cool on my home theatre setup”

Am watching NBA on ESPN and have seen the same Super Bowl ad about 50 times that uses Atomic City as the soundtrack. Sounds good.

Any smoke or fire around U2 involvement in some way, or just the Vegas connection?

likely smoke but no fire - although i wouldn't be stunned if we see Bono in a suite (eating all the food)

U2Songs update: https://www.u2songs.com/news/crystal_ball_filming_sphere_new_single_and_more

Says Glorify (the mysterious Sphere outro song) will be released as a single soon (maybe RSD).

And still saying the album is on track for this year, Fall specifically (2042 it is).

They don't say whether Atomic City or Glorify will be on it, though to me the former sound like the "rock album" and the latter sounds like SOA.

i don't get the glorify thing. they're going to release a song that doesn't feature Bono singing?
Wouldn't be surprised if they release a different mix with Bono on lead vocals, or at least prominent backing vocals.

But even if they don't, it might be something in the vein of The Wanderer?

U2songs speculates it could be a record store day release - I don't really know anything about RSD, but looking at u2's previous releases for that day, they seem to be re-issues/anniversary editions, not exactly lead singles etc. Is there a chance Glorify wouldn't be promoted in the same vein as Atomic city (i.e. no music video etc), and is relatively 'under the radar' (meaning it wouldn't matter that Bono isn't the main vocalist)?

So Larry is on board???

It's a strange situation either way you cut it, since they don't do non-album singles terribly often and guest vocalists even less often, so both at once is unprecedented. Could be a Bono version, mix of both, could be billed as a collab (like Saints are Coming), who knows.

Song sounds good though honestly so curious to properly hear it at least, whatever it is.

They don't give any update on his condition in the article, but seem to imply that the band expects him to be ready to tour by next year I guess. I suppose the timeline could be pending based on him, and they're just operating on best case scenario for now.

Yeah, I really like what we've heard of Glorify so far. It's got an atmospheric-hymn sort of style to it, which is exactly the kind of sound I could imagine for Songs of Ascent.

I'm curious to know who's producing it. It could be the Lillywhite/Jacknife Lee combo they've been using for a while, but based on (what little we can hear of) the synths and subdued guitar sounds, and the emphasis on choral vocals, it almost sounds a bit Eno-esque to me (though that might be whishful thinking).

Another single at some point after the residency concludes is a nice way to keep them in the public eye (ear?).
