I really liked the first Tired Pony song I heard, but the album is mostly dull, with maybe one or two other songs I liked.

I like a lot of Snow Patrol's songs, and I really like that guy's voice. I don't think Tired Pony is like Snow Patrol, though.

At least Snow Patrol knows their way around a hook. Hey-o!

i tried to not hate snow patrol because somewhere sometime ago i ended up with an acoustic cover of "teenage kicks" that they did. it wasn't even a very good cover. i'm sort of on the fence between calling it incredibly lame, and harmlessly forgettable. covering that song is enough to pique my interest in a band. and "tiny fractures" was alright. i'm assuming i got both songs from folks on here, or who used to post here, either on icde mixes, i'm not really sure. and while i can't remember exactly where, it wasn't ever anything i felt sketchy on whether i could trust the way the file was tagged (pretty sure it actually is who it said it was).

but then they came out with the "if i just lie here" song, and a handful of other singles that made me want to smash my radio if i...could...just...stay...awake...long enough to summon up the anger to actually do it. so goddamn dull.

although "you're all i have" was a guilty pleasure for about a week.

Seeing them open for U2 in Chicago pushed me over from "yeah, they're okay" to "hey, they're actually pretty good."

In an essay written for some Australian newspaper, Boner mentioned that Poppycock is the favorite Shuttlecock album of one of his daughters, and that it has him worried.

You should be worried if your daughter has better musical taste than you do. Probably a good idea to check your lease and start playing more of that album, and less of Heal The World 2000.

She probably only told him she liked it because she knew it would worry him/piss him off.

She's being rebellious.

Lemme get a link. I hope it was Eve.

Interestingly, it's the only U2 album that explicitly mentions his daughters.

"Lookin for the father of my two little girls..."

Perhaps that has something to do with it.

Although I've always personally interpreted the lyrics of Original Of The Species to be about Eve, even if that's not the case.

hey, since we're talking about bad covers (well, covers at any rate. i'm talking about bad ones), who in the hell did elton john's "saturday night" and why was that necessary?

The Who covered that song sometime around 1990. But I thought that their version was pretty muscular.

nah, definitely not it.

oh. i see now. nickelback was behind this. i shouldn't be surprised at all. they've been responsible for so much crap, what's one more thing?

and kid rock was involved!

if that's not a collaboration that makes me want to impale my eardrums with sharpened and flaming chopsticks, then i don't know what is.

This is the quote from that Bono-penned piece:

Pop, which was supposed to capture the fun and frolics of the freedom U2 found in the '90s, turned out as a document of the ensuing hangover.

It is my daughters' favourite, which has me worried.

I do think laz missed the joke.

I knew I could count on you.

I thought it was Boner speaking more to one of Hedge's daughters, if I remember the old interviews correctly.

And yet, on "The Soup" once he did a bit where he opened up his suit jacket only to reveal pictures of Kurt taped to the inside of it, and joined the cast for the opening number to the Emmys this year :D. His character on that show is a lawyer, after all...

GAF pretty much summed up the attraction of "Glee". I'm not a hardcore fan like some people are, I do like the show, but some are more serious in their fandom than me, so I can brush off a lot of the stuff that others are so critical of it for.

And to make this music-related again, the "Glee" version of "Teenage Dream" is the best one. Though Katy's version is all right. I can stand that one better than "California Gurls"-that song is very, very catchy, no doubt, but talk about overkill...

(I do have to admit to kind of liking that "I Kissed A Girl" song, though...)

Hey, they're still worlds better than The Fray.

Yeah, I'll go with that. I mean, I don't really have an opinion on the Fray one way or another, they're just sort of there, but between them and Snow Patrol, I'll go with the latter.

Here's the thing that confuses me: my sister loves the Fray, but can't stand Coldplay outside of a song or two here and there. Explain that.

oh. i see now. nickelback was behind this. i shouldn't be surprised at all. they've been responsible for so much crap, what's one more thing?

I kid you not, when I lived in South Dakota, sometimes I'd listen to a top 40 type station up there. They played Nickelback at least once every single hour. Or some song where the lead singer was a guest on it. For some reason, the stations here in this part of the country feel the need to play that band far more than they need to.

Finally I found a good AM oldies station and just started listening to that instead.

Also, I like "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", myself. But Elton's best songs are still "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road" and "Your Song", for my money.

Angela

I got the joke. But it has nothing to do with my criticism?

Hm, for some reason I thought you were making a comment about how it somehow meant they were going to play it safe on the next album again.

I am just full of reading comprehension fail today.

This is my recollection as well.

I read that piece yesterday, and this particular quote fucking pissed me off.

Whatever he's trying to say here, would it kill them to acknowledge POP outside of a short Discotheque snippet? If they can have a segment with three Rattle & Hum songs, why not something from POP? The stage is tailor-made for it!

They probably enjoy pissing people off.

I bet they read that one guy's review about being "pissed off" that IALW was still in the show and it made them chortle with glee, and now you're just egging them on by getting "pissed off" that they don't play Pop songs.

Way to go.

:tsk:

To be fair, I'm also baffled and frustrated (and kind of fascinated, at this point) by their unwillingness to touch that album. I just always kind of shake my head when anyone mentions getting "pissed off" because of something related to their setlists. If a concert/band is actually making you angry .... jeez, maybe it's time to let them go.

Normally I'd think that people who say "pissed off" in these cases are exaggerating, but knowing U2 fans, it doesn't really surprise me. Frustration? Yeah. Irritation? Okay! Pissed off? Jeez.

I mean, jeez! Jeez.

In a Little While is still inexplicable. That song is just all wrong for this tour, and there are scores of better options that they haven't played.

I agree. I just laugh about it now. It's like a U2 fan in-joke to me. I'm certainly not going to get pissed off about it.

They keep it simply because of the line about the rocket ship, because the stadium masses did not respond to YBR. I sure as hell did.

What's so frustrating is that a band capable of such greatness both on stage and in the studio makes so many boneheaded decisions. I wouldn't be pissed off at other bands because I don't care nearly as much.

Do I take this with me when I go to a show? No. But I can tell you that I am unable to really enjoy No Net unless I skip over Cock Crazy, and there's not another song in their discography that has the same effect on me.

If they can have a segment with three Rattle & Hum songs, why not something from POP? The stage is tailor-made for it!

Furthermore, "Last Night on Earth," "Gone," and "Please" are all tremendous live songs. I could probably add "Mofo" to that list as well. Even if the majority of the audience is not familiar with it, I think that "Last Night" would still get a strong reaction. It simply has too much energy not to do so.

I wouldn't be pissed off at other bands because I don't care nearly as much.

Yeah, I know. Sometimes I feel (somewhat) the same way.

But I still would never say I'm angry about it. Frustrated, yeah. But I just don't get the anger thing.

Oh well.

cos they where you live and they seen what you drive and they say they gonna put one in your helmet

cos you brag bout that watch and all the things that you got them boys turn your pound cake to red velvet

She probably only told him she liked it because she knew it would worry him/piss him off.

I have a friend from college who has hated U2 for years. He's a music nut and really into indie-type music (you know the type, I'm sure).

I told him that his 4-year-old is going to put him through hell when she gets older. She's going to be a huge U2 fan, just to rebel.
