Yankees fan stabs Red Sox fan after argument at Connecticut restaurant
Published: Monday, October 04, 2010

BRANFORD -- A dispute pitting a Boston Red Sox fan from New Hampshire vs. a New York Yankees fan from New Haven turned ugly at the Chowder Pot III Restaurant Saturday night, landing both men in the hospital and resulting in the Yankees fan's arrest after he allegedly stabbed the Red Sox fan, police said.

The New Hampshire man and Red Sox fan Monte Freire, 43, of Nashua, N.H., was in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he underwent surgery after initially being treated at the scene by Branford Fire Department paramedics, said police Capt. Geoffrey Morgan.

Police arrested John Mayor, 45, of 42 Edgewood Way in New Haven after he was tracked down by friends of the victim after allegedly fleeing into the parking lot of the restaurant, located at 560 East Main St., said police Capt. Geoffrey Morgan.

Mayor also was hospitalized, Morgan said.

Detective Lt. William Carroll said Freire and his friends were in the area over the weekend for a baseball tournament.

“At this point we believe that the argument erupted between Freire and Mayor while they were in the bar over something as simple as being rival professional baseball team fans.” Carroll said.

Sgt. David Galdenzi said that when the first officer arrived he noticed a number of men chasing Mayor toward the rear of the parking area.

“Mayor turned, looked at the officer, removed the knife from his jacket and threw it into the woods.” Galdenzi said. “He then began to fight with friends of the victim before he was taken into custody by the officer with the assistance of the friends.” Police found the knife after a lengthy search of the heavily wooded area, he said.

Mayor was charged with first degree assault, interfering with an officer, tampering with evidence, breach of peace and possession of a controlled substance. He is being held on a $500,000.00 bond, police said.

Isn't there a photo of PhilsFan somewhere that would be perfect here?

Props to TBS for making me miss the first two playoff games I've ever had the opportunity to see my favorite team play.

Atlanta v. San Francisco: I respect the hell out of Bobby Cox, and don't have anything personal against the Braves. But they do not have very many players that I care for, and the Giants are chillin' over there with my boys Uribe and Rowand. Also, it would be fun to watch Lincecum come out and just rip shit up in his first look at postseason baseball.

Cincinnati v. Philadelphia: The Phillies have been there the last two years, they don't need to get greedy. Then again, the Reds? Meh. I liked it when Brandon Phillips called out the loathsome Cardinals, but they don't really do much for me. This can be a wash for all I care, but I'd probably rather see the upset, since it seems that the Phillies have become everybody's pick recently. It would be boring if the team that everybody thinks is going to win actually wins, right? Yes.

Texas v. Tampa Bay: Two young and exciting teams, hungry for their first title, fighting it out. This should be a good one. I think that Texas, with Hamilton healthy, has the best and scariest offense in baseball. But they're going to be around for a while. This Tampa lineup is going to get dismantled in the offseason, so let's give them a ring while they're still standing. And then move the franchise to Orlando or some shit.

New York v. Minnesota: Yankees, pretty please, with sugar on top, burn them to the fucking ground.

Tampa over San Francisco in 6.

I'm scrambling to come up with work that I possibly can do with the TV on during the day.

Sucks to be a Ranger or Rays fan. I know it's viewership driven (thanks Yanks), but to have both of your playoff games during the day? Fuck you.

So, the Yankees confirmed that they are going with a 3-man rotation for the ALDS. NSW, me and a bunch of other people won't have to suffer through AJ just yet.

Hey Kram, I haven't been keeping up on the Morneau story. Have they said why his concussion has taken this long to heal? It seems like football players are back after a week or two?

I don't know. In fact, I've been really annoyed with how little info they have been dishing out about it. The organization said almost nothing in August and then it wasn't until we clinched that they even started talking about how he might be back for the playoffs. His wife had a baby a couple of weeks ago, but I'd hate to think that had anything to do with the time off.

I guess football players are just wired differently. I love baseball, and I don't blame Morneau for sitting it out, but seriously, baseball players get a wimpy with some of their injuries.
Okay, I guess it's the difference between a 16-game season and a 162-game season, too.

And...Haha, you cheer loud for your precious Yankees.

The Morneau concussion injury situation is incredibly strange. For many reasons.

Also, dude was hitting something like .350, with great power numbers, when he went down. Government conspiracy? Maybe. But let's not play the race card here.

Very impressive what that lineup was able to do without him, especially in July and August. We'll see what goes down here in October.

Honestly, Kram, wouldn't you say a good chunk of the credit for filling the Morneau-sized hole in the lineup goes to Jim Thome? What a great signing that was for you guys.

I think Thome has been a huge help (both at-bat and in the dugout), but filling Morneau's hole (did you really ask that? :D ), I think Delmon Young should get more of the credit. Delmon was the best hitter in the AL for July.

I don't think we have anyone as consistently as great a hitter as Morneau, but we have some seriously great hitters. They are just a little more streak-y than Morneau.

That's hitting. But, if we didn't have Cuddyer filling in at first for Justin, we'd have been fucked. You gotta love the guys who play as well in the infield as they do in the outfield and still are a threat at the plate.

I'd say Young or Cuddyer is our MVP this year--probably Delmon because of his July.

Young hit a scorching .434 with 12 doubles, six homers and 30 RBI in July. He had 16 multi-hit performances, including a pair of four-hit games in a three- game span from July 24-26.

Yeah, one day I looked up and Delmon had a crazy amount of RBI, seemingly out of nowhere. He was great.

Mauer is your best hitter, and some would call him the best pure hitter in the entire game. And you didn't even mention him in your post. Shows you how good that lineup is.

(did you really ask that? :D )

Ha, I'm trying to make as many U2 references as I can tonight on the message board, in threads that aren't related to U2. So far I've made two of them.

The bad part about this series is that I actually think the Twins are a pretty likable team.

Except for Carl Pavano and his moustache.

The line on MIN/NYY is +160/-180. Betting on Minnesota is practically free monies here.

I'm just not as familiar with the NL, but the AL match-ups are going to be fun as hell to watch.

What's Hamilton's status?

And Longoria?

Hamilton hasn't updated his status in days.

The last time I looked, it read "I like it on the kitchen counter"

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA the french...champagne!

Jim Thome is great. I can't think of anyone who would root against him.

SI just did a nice piece on him.

I knew this before reading it, but, he still gets booed in Cleveland. It's waned over the years but he still hears it. Sports fans are irrational, and, if you lived in Cleveland you're probably even more irrational than most. Makes me giddy, though, to think of the cacophony we'll be treated to when LeBron makes his return to the area.

I'm really excited for the Reds, Giants and Rangers, I love when franchises make their way back to the post-season. It will be a lot of fun to see Chapman in the playoffs, as well as Doc Halladay. And I've stated more than once how much I admire the Twins organization. It's also nice to have the Red Sox and Angels doing something else right now, frankly. I'm sure everyone felt that way in 2008 regarding the Yankees.

Anyway, I'm excited for tomorrow and it feels good to have not one team that I hate in the mix.

This made me laugh.

The thing about Delmon is that if he hit .400 for 2011, I wouldn't be surprised.

Mauer is a better hitter with Morneau behind him. I think it's because the pitcher is splitting his eyes between home and the on-deck. Gardy has been messing around with the batting order a bit. I don't think he's quite got it figured out yet. We'll see.

Mauer is the most intuitive baseball player I've seen in my meager baseball life. As long a career as he should have, even if he bows out from catching at some point, he could be a fucking awesome coach someday, too.
There is a tiny bit of talk of what position he could be moved to someday, maybe in 2 seasons.

Phillies fans cheered Thome when he hit a home run against the Phils, which is insane and says more about Thome than anything.

That home run cut the lead to five in the ninth, which was subsequently blown by Brad Lidge and we lost in extra innings.
