BRANFORD -- A dispute pitting a Boston Red Sox fan from New Hampshire vs. a New York Yankees fan from New Haven turned ugly at the Chowder Pot III Restaurant Saturday night, landing both men in the hospital and resulting in the Yankees fan's arrest after he allegedly stabbed the Red Sox fan, police said.
The New Hampshire man and Red Sox fan Monte Freire, 43, of Nashua, N.H., was in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he underwent surgery after initially being treated at the scene by Branford Fire Department paramedics, said police Capt. Geoffrey Morgan.
Police arrested John Mayor, 45, of 42 Edgewood Way in New Haven after he was tracked down by friends of the victim after allegedly fleeing into the parking lot of the restaurant, located at 560 East Main St., said police Capt. Geoffrey Morgan.
Mayor also was hospitalized, Morgan said.
Detective Lt. William Carroll said Freire and his friends were in the area over the weekend for a baseball tournament.
“At this point we believe that the argument erupted between Freire and Mayor while they were in the bar over something as simple as being rival professional baseball team fans.” Carroll said.
Sgt. David Galdenzi said that when the first officer arrived he noticed a number of men chasing Mayor toward the rear of the parking area.
“Mayor turned, looked at the officer, removed the knife from his jacket and threw it into the woods.” Galdenzi said. “He then began to fight with friends of the victim before he was taken into custody by the officer with the assistance of the friends.” Police found the knife after a lengthy search of the heavily wooded area, he said.
Mayor was charged with first degree assault, interfering with an officer, tampering with evidence, breach of peace and possession of a controlled substance. He is being held on a $500,000.00 bond, police said.
