How do we know that Bono didn't try heroin?

That might explain the mullet...

Which singer wrote a song about heroin without ever having tried the drug?

Um, and so what? That's the nature of art: artists don't have to experience everything they write about. It's called empathy.

Btw, I didn't even know who that guy was before I came into this tread, so my interest in what he has to say about Bono and U2 is exactly zero.

How about Johnny Rotten? That name does ring a bell, no?

That's just rude.
You can think this, but to post it?

You're probably right. I sometimes think U2 fans shoot themselves in the foot with statements like this, though. "I've never heard of any rock and roll people except Bono, but I have an opinion about how great U2 are" isn't really a sound position from which to gain respect.

But I was rude. Sorry Unicorn.

Rude, but I can see where you're coming from..

I respect the guy for his punk icon-status but seriously, who gives a flying fuck about PIL?? I bet you noone else my age (21) has heard of them. The guy is just a joke after selling out on I'm a Celebrity and Country Life.

Mikey,

read the background on the Celebrity thing before you judge.

Yes, he is a publicity whore. But no more than Bono.

I have to admit to me a little John Lydon/Johnny Rotten goes a very long way. I can almost make it through a PIL song, but have never, ever liked the Sex Pistols. They might be influential/important, but I've always found his bands (and his voice) mostly unlistenable.

Really?

Yes, he is a publicity whore. But no more than Bono.

Come on! When has Bono got off on someone popular just to make a headline? When has Bono made a commercial for something other than the band's music?

Yes, they both love publicity but one does it in conjunction with their music or cause, and the other just because...

no life experience? that's fucken rich.

This.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that without out and out naming it he's skirted around the topic in interviews saying he's looked over the edge and managed to pull himself back from it (or something to that effect, in the context of a discussion on Bad, RTSS, Hutchense, or something). I can't be bothered looking up whether it was heroin specifically, but it was a vice and it clearly was part of a 'life experience' that informed his lyrics.

Also, you don't necessarily have to do a drug to have a life experience with it. Serious addiction - especially leading to death - affects not just the user but everyone close to them.

Anyone who's offended, just take comfort in the fact that John Lydon hates EVERYONE!!!! That's his thing. But with that being said, I love the bitter old fuck. He's hilarious, really witty and intelligent (just look up any interviews with him on youtube for proof of that), and the guy, whether you like it or not, was extremely influential. So he doesn't like U2. Wow, shock of the century.

The Sex Pistols were pretty much just Malcom MacLaren's version of The Monkees. Without a TV show, but they were manufactured to cash in on the punk craze.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Exactly.

When I saw him perform, I was close to the stage and the crowd was not really into it......he started cursing and at one point he started spitting at the audience. After moving back  a few feet away from the stage, the hardcore fans moved up and the show actually got better, go figure.
Spitting aside, great performer.

MacLaren's influence over the music was pretty much zero. Never Mind The Bollocks is one of the greatest albums of all time, one of the top 100 at least. don't think The Monkees have one of those. PIL's Metal Box album is up there too.

I think it's great if the album is remembered well and people love it (don't care for it myself). But I think it's worth remembering that they were still a "manufactured" band.

Maclaren was a great self publicist, maybe his only major talent, he exaggerated almost every part of his role in the rise of the band. But yeah, they were manufactured, but so were so many other bands that we consider great.

... and I LIKE the Monkees!

I honestly do think a good chunk of their music is better than they get credit for.

But that's neither here nor there, so I'll shut up now.

Yes!!!

I'll be honest -- I like the Monkees a hell of a lot better than I've ever liked the Sex Pistols.

(and to those who like/love the Sex Pistols -- good onya, I just don't share that love)
