Did U2 want it to leak? - Album to stream on My Space - ARTICLES REGARDING THE LEAK

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I have the deluxe preordered on iTunes, the vinyl preordered at Amazon, I bought the album from Get Music the other night and I will be at the store first thing in the morning on release day to get the ^ "gazillion dollar super-deluxe-special edition". But I also think U2 deserves every penny of that too, so I'm totally ok with it. :)

That Alan Cross post

So has the poster who originally lead us to Getmusic been back? He only had two posts before, and his first post was basically, "Hey guys go here."

If he was a Universal plant, very sneaky and subtle to say "Oh, there's 90 second previews here," and then, oops, the tracks are for sale.

Bloody brilliant if this was all calculated. Plus they got me to spend an additional $12.34.

Same here. I've preordered the deluxe from iTunes and a standard CD from JB Hi-Fi, and I've got a Best Buy giftcard with box set written all over it. Still bought the tracks from Get Music and definitely will be getting my money's worth between now and March 3.

He said he was a lurker.. I talked to him briefly via pm. He didn't appear to be posting from Australia, if that means anything.

I dont think it will affect sales negatively it will only add to the hype especially since the majority seem to think its a good record.

The U2 Leak: Was It Staged?
Thursday, February 19, 2009

If there's one thing I've come to admire most about U2 it's their business savvy. Having dealt with their entire organization on a variety of professional levels over the years, I'm always impressed with how together the band and their management is.

Paul McGuinness, their chief overseer an Obi-wan went it comes to money, marketing and strategy, is one of the smartest people in music.

So how did No Line on the Horizon come to be leaked 9 days before it was scheduled to go on sale in Ireland and almost two weeks before its on-sale date in North America? Could this have been...premeditated?

Think about it. U2 would have been monitoring the pre-release hype and the semi-tepid reaction to "Get On Your Boots" in certain quarters.

Why not crank everything up a notch by engaging in a little guerilla tactics on the marketplace? Why not arrange for an "accidental" release of the album through what, for most, is an obscure outlet on the Oz side of the planet?

It wouldn't take much. Getmusic
is a legitimate online seller of music. They also just happen to be the official digital portal of the Australian branch of Universal.

And to which label is U2 signed? Universal. And who owns the masters, the publishing and the copyright of all U2 songs? U2 themselves. In other words, it's there music and they do whatever they damn well please with them.

These tracks weren't pirated, either. From what I understand, they were actually purchased from Getmusic. From there, though, they were ripped and torrented about the planet, generating instant global press within four hours of The Event.

Go ahead: Google "U2 album leak" and see how many major media outlets are now following the story. The whole world is talking about No Line on the Horizon now--and that's gotta be good for business.

What's that? Why give away the music? Let's face it: once the album was released in Ireland on the 27th, we'd have seen the same sort of file-trading.

U2's whole modus operandi involves selling physical product, which is why No Line is coming in a variety of flavours and different price points. The real money will come with the world tour that'll start in a few months.

Then again, this could simply be a software error or a screw up by a tired webmaster. But then again, U2 isn't run by stupid people. This could be part of a grand master plan.

I wouldn't be surprised.

Update on the U2 “Leak”

According to those who monitor such things, No Line on the Horizon was downloaded more than 100,000 times in the first ten hours since the album first appearance online sometime yesterday.

There’s a very strong possibility that the album will be released to radio this evening (eastern time in North America).

I’m still sceptical as to whether this was a real leak or a calculated move. Then again, it’s been pointed out that U2—especially manager Paul McGuinness—have always been vociferously anti-piracy.

Remember what I said last night at our listening partay?

I don't feel bad because I actually bought the tracks from the website when it was up. I've also pre-ordered the boxset from Amazon. U2 is getting plenty of my money.

exactly. i already pre-ordered on ITunes, so these files will be deleted from my computer on March 3rd.

It's not a matter of feeling bad, but feeling fear of getting that email $2000 fine? And don't worry folks, I too preordered-I'm no little devil child ;-)

If I got a fine for buying the tracks from get music, I would sue their ass.

My gut feeling says it is an inside job, not a malicious one at that either. I consulted the Magic 8 ball (well you have to in these situations, or for old times sake  ) with my question and it said "Who Knows". I don't think it is something we will ever get to the bottom of. :hmm:

If they seriously think the vast majority will now not buy the album on the strength of a leaked version they are insane, just makes me want the physical copy more. It's only the misers that take something for nothing.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when news reached McGuine$$ towers though

not sure if you heard the news from 2 months ago, but record companies have decided not to sue people for illegal downloading anymore.

The one thing about U2 fans is that we all enjoy having a physical copy of the album.

We also like having various special editions.

And we like sharing with our friends.

Tally all this up and you can see why U2's albums tend to go Platinum or more within a few months of release. Die-hard Fans alone will ensure big sales even if there isn't a huge hit song. :applaud: Most bands probably can't say that.

nothing would surprise me
as has been pointed out the album will become available for download once released anyway
and, indeed, everyone (well, apart from maybe 2) who downloaded it will buy it on release
so the only effect is free publicity

doesnt mean it couldnt just have been an accident
shit happens

I just love the fact that the leak started right here on Interference, in one of our very own leak threads! And now it's gone around the world :hyper:

Yeah, really. I don't think Universal would have any case to sue people who went to a legitimate website run by a Universal subsidiary and purchased items that they themselves were selling.

I haven't cancelled my Itunes, Deluxe Box set & Vinyl preorder either.

In my mind I paid an extra $12 for an advanced copy.

Which I still haven't even listened to. :reject:

True, but in the US willful infringement of unpublished copyrighted material is a felony punishable by up to three years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines per the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005. Totally separate from any civil suit brought by the RIAA.

It certainly questionable whether the material still qualifies as "unpublished" since it was made available for sale on a Universal Music site, but you could still find yourself facing criminal charges.

I think they would have a really hard time proving to any court that the people who bought this were "willfully infringing" anything.

Maybe they should have included a disclaimer on the payment page saying that the buyer should be sure that they are purchasing something that has actually been released

not sure either way, but it does help publicize in a way that hasnt been mentioned.

On top of the media mentions. I forwarded the link on to my family members. all of who are U2 fans, but not as much as me. theyre not on music media websites so havent seen a review. theyve heard Boots and thats it. all knew the album was coming out, but probably couldnt quote the date it was being released here in the States.

now they know its coming out.

They also probably dont even know how to open a zip file, but thats neither here nor there.

Also, if its downloaded say 200,000 times, thats hardly going to make or break anything for U2 seeing as they are expecting multi million in sales. and thats assuming the 200,000 people wont buy the album as well in some other form. So there really isnt much negative for U2/Universal that I can see.
