Will there be a promo tour this time ?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I wish for

a. TV shows in Europe and not only in the US
b. Some special arena gigs à la Irving Plaza/Astoria in Europe and other parts of the world
c. Maybe one or two outdoor promo gigs - FREE - like Brooklyn Bridge

With a spring release and Bono's comments about going for the "younger crowd," what do you guys think the chances are of a "U2 Night" on American Idol???

The thought of them playing the Today show or GMA scares me because it reeks of 'sellout' or 'end of the line' status, but the thought that they may appear on Americcan Idol (based strictly on the timing of the new album) really makes me shake. I remember hearing about Bono making an appearance (not live, but still...) and the contestants sang 'American Prayer', and Queen + Paul Rodgers and Bon Jovi have appeared in past years... Anyway, just wondering if this has been brought up yet.....

Two quick points regarding your post.

1. You actually make a lot of sense going off of Bono's comment. Unless he was saying it in jest, it seems like something they would have to do. Could you imagine an entire night of American Idols "singing" (aka - butchering) various U2 songs? I might have to pour acid into my ears if it happens.

2. My Dog's name is Bean (or Mr. Bean...no relation to the character). So needless to say I got a laugh after seeing your profile name

Bono's comments do point to something like that, but my two main reasons to not believe something like this would happen:
1. Bono said it. Being Bono he could be meaning anything or... nothing. It's Bono. If Larry or Edge said something like this, then I would be worried.
2. This is the band that refused millions from some company that want to use WTSHNN in a commercial cause they didn't want the song to lose its identity. They know what means show up at American Idol and they know how to take care of their image. I hope...

I really hope a U2 Night never happens, the Queen night they did just did not work for me at all.

Bono's appearance on American Idol was quite interesting though. He realises the power of the show but seems eager to keep a polite distance from the whole thing. I always thought how uncomfortable he looked in that pre-recorded clip anyway.

Why the rumours of delaying the tour until 2010 ?

Makes no sense, we have an album release date. Are these rumours just because U2 dare not to start their tour in the US ?

Because the album is later than originally planned surely theres no option but to play Europe first. In Europe stadium shows are only possible between end of may and mid sept, whereas in the States stadium shows i would guess with the right planning could be played all year round?

I wouldn't worry about those rumors. For a long time we've been hearing that U2 would be playing Euro shows this summer from a variety of semi-solid sources.

would'nt it be great if:-

the played a outdoor mini show at a landmark in London on the day of the album release then straight after flew to New York and did the same the next day at a New York Landmark on their album release day

That would be amazing!

How about my school's theater, where I can watch the show from a comfortable show in front of the sound board?

NLOTH Promo tour

Im very curious and exicted about that a promo tour might be around pretty soon. I don't see any reasons for them to not do like they did around the releases of ATYCLB and HTDAAB. So I think it is time for a thread like this :)
Are there any rumors yet?

the only confirmation we have so far are those award shows. i would think they would do something. yet, things seem so secretive and ass-backwards this time around that i'm not going to use history as any indicator of what the band might do, lol.

Maybe this will be necessary only after the next album, since this album will be a flop and they will be reaplying for the job of the biggest band in the world... again.

I heard somewhere they will be playing some songs on Irish radio live about when the album is released. Would be cool if they did a few club gigs somewhere like atyclb promo tour as well.

Ahhh, stop it already, will you?

Seriously, is there any thread where you are not posting your negative blurb?

This has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

On topic:

I cannot wait to see U2 perform again. I hope there will be promo stuff like radio interviews, tv specials etc. GOYB will surely be great live, I just hope Bono studies the lyrics properly.

get on your boots will be difficult to play live... one can hardly predict that it'll be "great." could be, has the potential to be... but it's wait and see on that one.

the reaction to the single is mixed at best... this isn't 1991/92... in today's world where 90% of the population has ADD it's very risky to put out a single that's a grower. heck, the general population thought pop was a dance album because of discotheque and ignored some pretty great songs that came after it... our attention spans were 3 times as big then. what's gonna happen now?

the album better be great, or it could certainly flop. not in the sense of a normal band's album flop... the sales for pop would make most bands jump for joy. but flop in u2's sense.

it's impossible to say, it's all speculation because NONE OF US HAVE HERAD THE ALBUM. some of you basing your opinion on how good a song is going to be based on a title or a few words in a review or even a poor sound quality beach clip is just silly. it's been proven before that this approach does not work. we will only know once the album is released.

personally i hope it's phenomenal and blows me out of the water. but i don't know, and based of boots, yes... it is possible that the album could even be really good and still flop because our society has no patience any longer.

care for another glass?

look... i want the album to be great, i hope the album is great... but i can't say that i know the album is going to be great, for i am a free thinking homosapien, thus i can not make a logical statement about something of which i have not heard.

I don't see whats so difficult about it. Its still just 4 guys playing instruments. There's a kid on youtube who basically nailed a cover of the drum part, and there are a bunch of people already covering Edge's parts so I can imagine that if amateurs can sound great doing it then the professionals will blow it out of the water. Not to mention the fact that the vocals don't seem very difficult...its not like Bono has to transition through a varying range of scales and notes.

I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised by what we hear. It may even be better than the single itself. I just have that feeling.

Huge generalization on your part with absolutely nothing to back it up, but I definitely understand that you're saying it somewhat tongue in cheek.

Yeah...that my worry too. Its could be an amazing album that flops in terms of sales. But, to be honest...POP went to #1 worldwide, so I doubt this one will have any trouble.

Two words for you...Miracle Drug.

I thought it was the greatest thing since ziplock baggies and look what happened when the album version came out.

So cynical....do you need a hug or something??? :D

I think there is another thread about the (possible) promo tour....

Anyway, I am curious (read: scared) that they may participate in a U2 American Idol night. I watch the show every now and then, but it would reek of "sell-out" or "has-been" status. But, I recall Bono mentioning that they are going after the younger crowd, so an American Idol would make sense if the rest of the band agrees with Bono's statement. I remember a Queen night from a couple years ago and think Bon Jovi appeared on the show at one point as well. Thought....

Look... usually I don't like when people say that the album will flop with without giving a reason or presenting a decent argument. But what the hell... BoyOnTheHorizon doesn't like it... leave it that way.

He's being repetitive and it's kinda annoying... but that's his problem... he's the one that waited for years and now won't be enjoying. Why you guys care so much anyway. He doesn't like, I'm fine with it.
