U2 To Sell Five Versions Of New Album - One With Almost $100 List Price

Amazon.com listings show formats ranging from standard CD to full Box Set

@U2, December 19, 2008

Matt McGee

U2 will release five different versions of their next album, No Line On The Horizon, with one version carrying a list price of almost $100 (USD). That's according to product listings on Amazon.com tonight. All five are listed with a March 3, 2009, release date.

Officially, U2 has only announced the album's name and release date; no details have been shared about different formats. Earlier this year, though, manager Paul McGuinness hinted to BBC radio that the new album's release would be unique: "We will obviously work with whatever technology is available to make the release of the new record as interesting as possible."

The first two formats on Amazon.com are standard CD and vinyl releases:

Audio CD ($13.98 list price)

Vinyl (2 LP) ($17.98 list price)

There are also three "limited editions" listed, each with unique bonus material:

Digi-pack version (CD/Poster/Film Download) ($35.98 list price)

Magazine version (CD/Magazine/Film Download) ($49.98 list price)

Box Set version (CD/Poster/Book/DVD) ($95.98 list price)

None of the individual product pages provides any more information than what's in the name of the product. Amazon UK also lists five versions of No Line On The Horizon, but the product descriptions aren't as detailed; one listing, though, does refer to a "Hardback Book" -- likely the same item in the "Box Set" listed on Amazon.com.

(Thx to Ivan of U2 Fan Life for tipping us to the Amazon listings.)

I saw this today. What's the "film download"? :hmm:

I have no idea how Amazon create their prizes at this point and how reliable they are, but it surely sounds like a single album, not a double album.

If $13.98 is only the first week sale prices, like with most retailers, it could be a double album. And then it'll go up to its normal price of $15.98 after the first week. Of course, I'm wrong on this because it's not going to be a double album. And I hope to God it's cheaper at Target or Best Buy.

I didn't see the other thread, so I'll comment here.

ok 13.98=means single album, no double album
Not surprising though (was always just a pipe dream anyhow).

The other thing is, given the release date and these details, there is no doubt at all that U2 is using the classic release model.

That's just a shame. I thought they'd try something different.

Let it not be a precursor of things to come.

Claims of "sell out" would be silly, U2Girl?
The album is 14 bucks.
If a fan wants to indulge themselves with all the rest, it's their own choice. Edit* of course, it's all a luxury, ya know. Entertainment.

I just mean allowing access to the basic album for a decent price.
Not all the bells and whistles.

I would say that I got the Htdaab CD and DVD for about $30.
To get a hardcopy for NLOTH Cd and DVD is $100?

Fuck it, I guess I won't pad Mercury/Universal's pockets then.

I do hope you're right though!

Not likely, as you say.

At this point, if it's less than 12 songs, I will bitch.

Just warning everyone.

Interesting, I wonder what sort of DVDs/magazines will be offered.

Probably the $100 that each one of us pays for the super special version goes to cover the cost of the 8-10 downloaded by the casual fan.

I was being sarcastic, but this

Digi-pack version (CD/Poster/Film Download) ($35.98 list price)

Magazine version (CD/Magazine/Film Download) ($49.98 list price)

Box Set version (CD/Poster/Book/DVD) ($95.98 list price)

isn't expensive (fan choice or not) ?

No, it's expensive.

It's fucking ridiculous actually but I didn't want to start the argument.

^ Sounds expensive to me, but I doubt these will be the final prizes.
I bought all the other box sets/deluxe editions of U2 releases in the last years as well and none of them were that expensive.

The prize of the album isn't expensive, that's what I pay for most albums that I purchase on Amazon.

Yeah, that's my big issue.

If they can't let the regular guy pay a decent price for the album, then I will be the first to throw grenades. $14 ain't bad, maybe too much for 90% of other artists to charge but for U2, I guess it goes with the territory. I think it's reasonable. I paid at least that much for Achtung Baby 17 years ago.

The problem is Universal/Mercury knows how big of a cash cow they are and we all know they are strapped for cash. So the gouging on the 'perk' packages comes from the label, I would highly suspect.

What does a normal single album cost in the states? In Sweden they normally start at 159 SEK which is about $20!

At a major retailer for Target, single albums are anywhere from $5.99-13.99. But $5.99 and $13.99 are the more rare side of things. At least in the store I work at. Usually somewhere between about 8 and 12.

What does Vinyl (2 LP) actually mean? Double album prehaps?

no way...same as CD standard for sure
vinyl speaking, Rattlle and Hum was a double album, but the CD is a simple
so maybe the album contains 12 to 18 tracks
but the vinyl pressing could very well contains standard 11 to 12 tracks pressed on 180gr/audiophile discs which would explains the double LP

u2tour.de is listing the editions as following ... I don't know where they got that from because I cannot find those details on Amazon:

Standard: Album CD and 24-page booklet. $9,99

Magazine: Album CD and 60-page magazine. Features exclusive access to downloadable Anton Corbijn film. $49,98

Digipak: Album CD, 36-page color booklet, and foldout poster. Features exclusive access to downloadable Anton Corbijn film. $35,98

Box Set: Bespoke box containing digipak format album CD, DVD of Anton Corbijn's exclusive film, 64-page hardback book, plus a foldout poster. $95,98

Vinyl: Two black vinyl discs, gatefold sleeve, and a 16-page booklet.

^ I think I'll also get the BoxSet with the DVD (can't wait to see the Corbijn film), Poster and Book!

But the most important thing, of course, is the album.

$14 is a really expensive single album.
Maybe where you live but here in holland you will pay 15 to 18 euro's for a single cd album so that would be 20 to 25 dollars for an album.

But we are used to getting screwed. ;) Anyway knowing myself i will most likely get the deluxe boxset and just a normal cd with it.
