A comment from the RS article that made me spit out my coffee...

"The Edge, aka a world famous, filthy rich 55-year-old who can't deal with going bald."

I just hope tired songs get new life on the tour. Looking at you "Still Haven't Found..."

I'm also kind of looking forward to the return of Running to Stand Still.

kind of?

I find the locations listed for the tour dates to be kind of fascinating.

MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ: MetLife Stadium is in the shadow of NYC, and when the Super Bowl was played there, everyone couldn't help but market it as a NYC Super Bowl. This tour, though, very accurately bills the show as East Rutherford (just as the band usually has done through the years).

Levi's Stadium - San Francisco, CA: Levi's Stadium is in Santa Clara, a good 45 miles from SF (which with traffic, can take an eternity to travel from). And yet, SF is the billed city!

I wonder how these billings are dictated sometimes.

While it's great they are at least mentioning SOE, it's been close to being done for a long time.

We were all joking how the election would force them to rethink and sure enough it did.

Release it. If it's got a bunch of happy songs on it, maybe that's what the world needs?

Apparently the world needs The Joshua Tree again.

might be a contractual obligation. the state of new jersey owns and operates MetLife Stadium. maybe they've added something in to contracts saying that the shows must be referred to as being in New Jersey. it is odd that they pick and choose where to be geographically accurate and where to be general.

Beyond maybe wanting to write a new song or two about it, I doubt Trump's election had a serious impact on SoE being delayed.

We heard the plans 'all went to shit' around September, and we knew with quite a bit of certainty that we weren't seeing an album in 2016 before the election results in November. So there was definitely another reason for delaying, but Trump is a clever public excuse for both delaying a likely finished album and making a tour centred around a 30 year old album somehow seem relevant and appropriate.

If the album was done - with upbeat music which the band felt could yield a hit - and there were no Live Nation obligations, I bet the band would release it right now saying "2016 was a tough year, here's something hopeful and optimistic in response to that".

I don't think the election really had anything to do with it, it was just that some people here wondered aloud (written) if Trump winning would mean Bono needs to write some new, protest songs for SOE

And Edge has kind of said that....they're just so hesitant.

What I believe is that all the talk of 14-16 songs, they really only have 7-8 finished. Since it took 5 months to finish a song like Ordinary Love, if that's the standard per song....no wonder it's taking years.

I just don't think they have the songs, and I'm not sure they'll have them by the fall. The excuse being SOE isn't the album the world needs right now.....

I think some new material could be written about Trump's victory, but I think that would only be taking advantage of an album already being delayed by this obligation to play JT shows. If there wasn't that obligation, i doubt they'd delay SoE to write more relevant stuff, though maybe i'm wrong.

As for the status of SoE right now, I actually do think it's done. Chris Evans and Alan Cross, both reputable and both with links to the band, have stated it's done, plus we've had more than a couple of posters (who i consider reliable myself) say the same. I doubt all those rumblings would happen if the album wasn't done.

My concern is not that they won't complete it by late 2017, but that they'll second guess themselves and push it back into 2018. And beyond that, a fear that by 2018, they might think the concept of SoE/I&E is stale, and just decide to start from scratch with a new concept, leading to an album in 2019/2020. I think we have a good 50% chance of that.

And Landover, MD is certainly not in DC.

You could take a boat

Brilliantly played!

They're coming to Dallas on a Friday night. I guess I really don't have much of an excuse not to be there.

disagree.

if the album were done and ready to their liking, they'd release it. there is no obligation to play Joshua Tree dates. they could have easily just played SOE dates (and i suspect that these dates were originally slated to be SOE dates).

criticism that they're too skittish to release anything is fair - but they wouldn't delay an album they were confident in just to tour the Joshua Tree. that's silly.

Man, the live transition of Streets/Still Haven't/With or Without You is going to be weird.

They still might not play it in order, despite Edge's remarks. Adam said on RTE this morning that they haven't worked out how that will work yet. It wouldn't shock me if once they get into tour rehearsals, they decide not to play it in order. Personally, I think Streets makes a helluva closer, maybe transitioning out of Still Haven't?

if i had to guess right now, they'll probably come out roaring and play 4-6 of their most important pre-JT songs, end with ASOH, then stop, talk about JT, and play it in it's entirety. then after the intermission/break, they'll come out roaring with the Fuck-Trump "Desire" and get all political as they build to the future, move from anger to '00's joy, and do 1-2 SOE songs. why not play new songs for all these people who bought tickets to motivate them to buy the album in the fall?

it's what i would do.
