Really? Have you read the RS interview with Edge yet? This Joshua Tree tour wouldn't be happening if the election went the other way. That seems pretty clear.

(And I'm not supporting the buffoon, btw, before we get sucked down THAT rabbit hole...)

Yeah, but your original argument was there was fear that most in America disagreed with them and that would effect ticket sales.

i had to go and check his tweets for a second there

I guess even U2 wishes we went back to the good times like 1987 when America and Russia became friends and an an guy on TV/Film could be president... oh wait....

Your theory was that U2 were concerned about ticket sales after trump's victory and TJT tour would be an easier sell. I don't buy that for a minute.

Argh!!! Donald fucking Trump delaying the album, I KNEW this would happen! It's U2 all over, and is extremely annoying, infuriating, ridiculous, and pathetic!!!

SOE should have been released in 2015, or at the very least, before the election!

It was supposed to be a 2-part album with SOI, and the tour is even named after the idea of having both albums! It will be at least 3 years since SOI when SOE comes out, if it even will still be called that- which it may aswell not now, because too much time has passed and the novelty has worn off!

Bloody annoying. SOE should have come out before the election. And then, if they absolutely NEEDED to, do a fucking Trump album as their 15th album after SOE! But... it's too late now, because they have been faffing about and making stupid decisions!

SOE wasn't finished in time to satisfy your ideal timeline, m'Lord.

this is how Esquire is reporting the news...

U2 Just Announced Its Most Important Tour in Years
The Joshua Tree anniversary will highlight Trump-era politics.

Sometimes it's hard to look past the modern blunders of U2—that album forcibly placed on your iPhone, that Spider-Man musical, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb—to see the power of its early legacy. Their 1987 album The Joshua Tree remains one of the most influential records of all time, defining the future of arena rock while also tackling heavy political themes.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the iconic album, and to celebrate, U2 has announced a tour that highlights some of their most important music. Kicking off on May 12 in Vancouver, U2 will embark on the 17-date Joshua Tree Tour. This limited run of arena dates also includes a headlining spot at Bonnaroo Music Festival in June.

"It seems like we have come full circle from when The Joshua Tree songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right wing politics, and some fundamental human rights at risk," The Edge said in a news release. "To celebrate the album—as the songs seem so relevant and prescient of these times too—we decided to do these shows, it feels right for now. We're looking forward to it."

If anything, the tour certainly does highlight the album's resonance with our modern political environment. As The Edge told Rolling Stone, he's specifically referencing Donald Trump and American politics.

"That record was written in the mid-Eighties, during the Reagan-Thatcher era of British and U.S. politics. It was a period when there was a lot of unrest," the Edge told Rolling Stone. "Thatcher was in the throes of trying to put down the miners' strike; there was all kinds of shenanigans going on in Central America. It feels like we're right back there in a way."

I said 'much' of America, not 'most'. Regardless, I can see where the bean counters at LN might have been a little freaked out by the band taking on Trump so forcefully - and then a lot freaked out when he actually won.

Your theory was that U2 were concerned about ticket sales after trump's victory and TJT tour would be an easier sell. I don't buy that for a minute.

Then we'll disagree. I never said that was the ONLY factor in this decision, only that I wondered if it played a part. hey, i'm just speculatin' here.... isn't that what we do 99% of the time?

Not too hard to predict a setlist..

I'm guessing that the narrative about SOE supposedly being about and their rise to superstardom during TJT era will lead to a new song or two

1. Desire
2. Love Comes to Town
3. NEW SONG!
4. Van Diemen's Land
5. Angel of Harlem
6. Love Rescue Me
7. Spanish Eyes

Intermission, set to Beautiful Ghost - Introduction to SOE

8. WTSHNN
9. ISHFWILF
10. WOWY
11. Bullet
12. RTSS

Intermission 2

13. RHMT
14. In God's Country
15. Trip Through Your Wires
16. One Tree Hill
17. Exit
18. Mothers of the Disappeared

Encore
19. Pride
20. Unforgettable Fire
21. Walk On
22. All I Want is You

That looks like a pretty good guess. I had thought some earlier stuff (IWF) to start off, but Rattle and Hum songs are more in keeping with the theme/sounds of Joshua Tree, without having to open with Streets.

Would be awesome if we did see a new SoE tune. I wonder if it would be a deep/random cut off the album, or if they would go for a lead single? If the latter, then i assume that would mean promotion of SoE would start in may, alongside these shows.

Seems like they just recycled what was already said in the release and interview. Couldn't help but notice they also refer to the gigs as arena dates...

highlights from Adam's RTE interview, concerning SOE
- not quite there yet
- 14 to 16 songs done
- may tweak in coming months, as JT tour gets underway.

echoes what Edge said, I guess.

I'll never understand this imaginary timeline that folks have built in their heads.

Where in the rule book does it say companion albums have to be less than 2 years apart?!

The Edge is full of shit. This tour is about MONEY MONEY MONEY! Of course h can't say that, but that yarn he's spinning is just silly.

Eh, whatever. I'm overall disappointed in their dismissive attitude towards SOE. But whatever, they'll get my money either way, and I'll have a great time either way.

Haha, I get Esquires point, but I don't really recall "Bomb" being a blunder aside from the horrible cover art.

full audio here

it's a nice, long interview. a good one.

EDIT:
just listened in full, instead of skipping through

- Adam doesn't guarantee JT songs in sequence
- says some SOI songs will likely appear, and likely some songs "to herald the future" will appear (SOE stuff). Maybe book-ending the JT songs
- he defines tweaking SOE songs:"hone them done," they're "essentially finished"

And it's a great, great album. Everyone loves the first three songs.

Everyone.
Have I ever told you that I find Still Haven't Found to be my least favorite track on The Joshua Tree. I've been on record here saying that.
I don't dislike the song, but I definitely do not love the song.

so two things;

#1) every tour is about money money money. You think they figured out how to have seats in the entire stadium on 360 for the aesthetic value of it all? that they went to a GA set up to help lower costs for fans? that they decided to take ZooTV outdoors because they liked the fresh air? of course it's about the money. it's always about the money in some way. always has been, always will be.

#2) that said... if this were a true money grab, we don't give a crap anymore, just sell sell sell move... this announcement would have been accompanied by another re-release of the album (complete with special edition bonus collectors edition disc of Edge humming melody ideas to himself on the shitter), plus a new single (Spanish Eyes 2017 mix!), and they would have broken out the claw to jam as many people in there as possible.

I'd double dip on TJT if they pulled more things from the vaults... specifically shows filmed from the era.

So if I voted for Hilary SOE would have come out

Kidding!!

Pretty exciting news U2 fans! I think its cool U2 is doing this summer tour to celebrate 30 years of the JT. Were gonna get the B side of the JT in its entirely at these shows!! And I think as U2 fans its cool to celebrate their biggest album and the same lineup. Not many bands can say that.

Do any of you think they'll play one POP song??? It is the 20th anniversary of Pop this year. I'm thinking Please??

And I'm 99% sure they'll play 1 or 2 off of SOE. There gonna want to test out the new tunes. And the reviews/videos will make mention of U2 playing JT but also pushing forward with new materiel.

OK, so props for playing the album in full. Intriguing...
sucks we'll have to wait for SOE but c'est la vie.

Maybe Bono will have a little space free on his hat plane.

I just hope tired songs get new life on the tour. Looking at you "Still Haven't Found..."

I'm also kind of looking forward to the return of Running to Stand Still.
