makes ya wonder if this is going to be the last tour though

 Why does it? if infact you read the article it came from, you would see what the rest of the band had to say, infact adam talking about writing songs until they are "dribbling",

But yes way to go with the people who just picked up one quote and ran with it.

Here's what he actually said. U2 in Their Own Words: U2 : Rolling Stone

Larry Mullen Jr.: We don't always like each other but we respect each other, and we love each other. Marriages don't last this long. Will it stop working at some time? I'm sure it will. It's not indefinite. There will be a time where it's like, "It's time to go," and I would like that time to be on a high when you're still achieving, as opposed to on the curve down. That'll be sad for me. I think it'll be a more dignified time to actually go, "You know what? That's the end of that period" and we might come back in five years time and may do something together just for old times sake 'cause we know we'll want to. And I think that'll be a beautiful end to a long a beautiful career.

No [I haven't discussed this with my bandmates]. We don't discuss a lot of things. I'm just saying what I imagine it would be like, but I don't know. Of course it can't go on forever. It just can't. And if it ended tomorrow, would it be sad? Sure. But it wouldn't be the end of the world. It helps, I imagine, that you have a family, that you have a life outside the band. As a younger man would it have felt like the end of the world? I think it would have been more difficult. But my family is obviously important, as is everybody's in the band. It's an important part of our life.

Wait, didn't they just come back after five years?

I stand corrected, this is why people are "jumping down your throat".

After people explaining to you that the quote was taken out of context, you still try and pretend like you believe it in order to strike some fear into people...

I think that after this current period of the band ends in late 2010, they will do one more album/tour cycle in 2013 or 2014, then they will "retire", and come back for a "farewell tour" in 2020 to coincide with the 40 year anniversary of the Boy album. This 2020 tour may or may not have an album released with it, but more likely, this will be when they release the re-recordings of the first few albums Bono was talking about.

I just hope Larry defines "high" as artistic high and not commercial high. This band can still make great, complex, genuinely uplifting and honest music, but it has to WANT to do so. I don't care if they tour; I want more albums of greatness.

No, Larry, like many others, defines "high" as something completely different. But I wish he'd listen to you because I agree.

Hmmm... and yet I seem to recall watching a show atop BBC recently where Bono himself said "we're not going away anytime soon." Now which source would I rather trust? :hmm:

lol...you mean it's a strong possibility that one day U2 are going to retire? Get out. You're kidding, right? They're immortal, never aging and will write music into the next century, obviously.

well we already know Edge is from the future, so he will just take the rest of U2 into the future with him  they will be gone but make a comeback in 2976, 1000 years after their formation.

Stupid article said:
Despite considering retirement, the Irish rockers recently announced plans for a mammoth world tour.

 bad journalism...nowhere in the RS article did it imply they were considering retirement NOW. this article makes it sound like they were thinking about retiring but changed their minds

Well you're not going to know if there are more "albums of greatness" if you don't fucking listen to the new albums.

After U2 retire we (Interference) shall design a diabolical plan to preserve Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry in ice and release them far into the future. :mac:

Please suggest a better plan.

Gees, everyone is taking this out of proportion. He never said retire now, he said retire before they jump the shark and start making trash albums and can't perform the way the do now.

There will be a time

What I got was they don't want to be like the has-beens who do the local club tours.

I might be completely wrong, but thats what I got out of that article.

Actually I think about zero people are blowing it out of proportion, since no one except possibly OP has taken the article seriously.

U2 to go out on high note..................

U2 to go out on high note

The Daily Express, March 21, 2009

WITH U2 having released their 12th album, drummer Larry Mullen Jr believes their days are numbered.

A founder member with Bono, The Edge and Adam Clayton, he says it’s important the band goes out while still on top of their game.

“There will be a time when it’s like, ‘It’s time to go,’” says Larry, 47, known as Babyface Mullen.

“I would like that to be on a high when you’re still achieving as opposed to the curve down. That’ll be sad for me. I think it’ll be a more dignified time to go.

“We might come back in five years’ time and may do something together for old times’ sake because we know we’ll want to. That’ll be a beautiful end to a long, beautiful career. It can’t go on for ever. It just can’t.”
