Hmm Ive had more listens now. Imo, except for the vocal, this song could have been lifted right from Pop. There are many "Pop" elements to the song. Maybe a few too many elements mashed together tho.

Im still having a hard time with the vocal style and lyrics.

This is definitely a challenging song, but my opinion has improved a bit. The underlying groove is just too strong to resist I think. Bono pushes me away, and Adam pulls me back in

I predict most people who absolutely hate it with cold passion will thaw a bit.

just my opinion, but if it wasn't u2, most people would soon forget this song, sincerly hope the rest of the album is much better, otherwise the wait will not have been worth it, very disappointed!

with all due respect, i just don't get this argument. U2 is U2, and no one else would have made this song.

GOYB Sound Quality

Anyone else disappointed by the sound quality? I thought they would have learned their lesson after the sonic mess that was HTDAAB. I bought the iTunes Plus 256 kbps version and the mix is muddy and distorted. Everything is too loud and the nuances are lost. I am listening on a Sony Walkman mp3 player (better than iPod) with Sennheiser headphones.

I don't get "muddy" and "distorted". Check your ears for wax? :D

listen to it on headphones... it sounds unbelievable on them. i didn't like the sound either when i listened to it on u2.com on a nice imac, but after plugging headphones, it sounds really really good.

ok since 1810 its now 1905 in the uk

i have played this song on repeat

i cant stop:up:

:reject:
not as good as the shock of the lightning though

the song gets me excited about the new album
so it definitely does its job

it's quite inventive the way they managed to throw so many seperate ideas together and make it sound quite effortlessly
and it sounds gorgeous
Eno / Lanois

To me, it seems like some people are viewing this song as "different" (though I don't see it as anything all that different from something like "Vertigo" or "Fast Cars") from the "standard U2 by numbers." And because of that, they are automatically trying to force themselves to like it because it IS the first single from their favorite band. And if you don't like the first single, well that would be blasphemy...

I also love how so many are saying that the song is likely a "grower." If you go the tenth time of listening to the song without being a fan of it, you probably aren't going to like it.

Additionally, while I do agree with those who say that the song is not going to be as big of a hit as "Vertigo" or "Beautiful Day" in the United States, because of iTunes, I think it will chart higher than both of them. However, "Get on Your Boots" will certainly not be as memorable as the previous two first singles.

this is as unique as you get with a band of any genre, how can you compare this to any track previously released by the band

I cannot wait to see the line of go go dancers on stage during the upcoming tour

I agree, it makes me think of Miami and Fast Cars smushed together.

I've been thinking about all the criticisms of Bono's verses. They're chant-y, scatty, and so far I've read that he's completely and shamelessly ripped off:

Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up"
The Escape Club's "Wild, Wild West"
Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues"

And it got me thinking.. how many other songs can one song rip off at once? Doesn't this, just for a second, merely suggest that U2 have sung a couple of verses in the the same tradition as other artists? Some of them great artists?

This isn't Coldplay and Satriani here. Portions of this song don't overlap completely with portions of the above classics.

Unless GOYB is just a great chain reaction of rip-offs, and you can trace the same chanting style to a Tibetan Monastery hundreds of years ago, it's pretty safe to say Bono made the same choice for the style of his verses as did other artist in the past. There will probably be singers in the future who choose to go the same way.

Heck, he made the same choice with Vertigo, and no one with an ear would accuse those verses from sounding similar.

Oh wait.. they are making those accusations. :)

so are you saying that i actually don't like the song? man, this is confusing. i really thought i did. i guess you know me better than i do though...

What do you win if you convince someone else to not like the song?

One less album sale could be the difference between Bono getting a 100ft or a 150ft swimming pool on top of the U2 tower

I have finally managed to stop listening to it

its need to come with a warning

too catchy and contaigious

Pheeeeeeeeeeeew

What so now people are forcing themselves to like it? even if they do ACTUALLY like it?.

Yeah, it'll take a while to peel away the layers of the song over multiple plays, but there's a killer song in there. It's an exciting performance for sure; Bono and Larry are really getting into it.

Not trying to convince anyone. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, etc. Just stating mine here, like everyone else.

What do you feel about the song, Dalton?

The only people trying to force anything are the haters. Trying to force the opinion that you must be a blind sheep to have enjoyed this song because it's obviously shit. No one in this topic is forcing themselves to like the song, they like it because... they like it!

God this reminds me of all those tools who say stuff like "lern 2 play teh reelz gitar n00b!" when someone jams on Rock Band. Get over yourselves and let others have their own fun.

Just read a few comments on boots and my humble opinion is that it rocks big time! Perfect first single, but i dont for one second think it will be the best song on the album.

live it should have the same effect as Vertigo...put this song in place of Vertigo on the last tour and you can picture it going right along with the red lights circling the bulls eye on the stage. I think that is where most people are seeing the influence there as you could swap them out in in the concert set list...... if this was the last tour...

Just give it up already. Bono ripped off an entire GENRE by talking over a musical beat. That fat, lazy bastard.

I'm glad you cleared that up for me...

Note to self: You DO NOT like this song.

I just listened to it on headphones instead on what i thought were high quality computer speakers. It completely changed my opinion about it, there are so many layers to it and now I really like it. You can make out the lyrics better, the melody, and just overall how everything blends together. There are some similarities to Vertigo I guess or even Pop, but Vertigo didn't have as many sonic qualities to it, and Pop sounds too distorted sometimes. This is different than anything from them this decade, and whatever guitar/guitar setting Edge uses here sounds like the one from when they played Fast Cars during the last tour. Someone earlier said it's a 'teaser' for the album, and i certainly hope it is. The next six weeks or so will be absolute torture.
