U2 To Sell Five Versions Of New Album - One With Almost $100 List Price

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Quality > quantitiy for the songs. Unless they really deliver the goods to back up a double album.

no one is talking about double album right now, just single CD, but with 12-15 songs on it...
and a "filler" for some is an all time favorite for others!

1. The price will drop probably 30% for the super deluxe on amazon on the US
2. They are taking advantage of the die-hards
3. The NIN example does not apply--The Ghosts set was unreal--and sold out. Each item was "coffee table worthy." The extars were incredibly techy and forward thinking. Plus he gave The Slip away for free, and then released it on CD/DVD for $13 US. The HTDAAB deluxe stuff was cheap, but I think I still got it for $22 US--$100 or anywhere close is ridiculous.
4. 5 Flavors is too much ( Windows Vista anyone?). They should have a CD/DVD for under $30 and a CD for what they have it for currently. If they are going to sell something for $100 or even $70, it should be over the top good (performance related, no EPK stuff).
5. I will be patient as details are released, but I am sick of U2 treating the die-hards like cash cows.
6. Starting to get burned out on milking the die-hards--for the first time ever, I did not buy the Deluxe re-releases--the only official releases I do not own.
7. Digital download of the DVD is stupid--and wayyyyyyyyy overpriced--it will be on the interwebs in minutes. I will buy the CD only, and go from there. U2 is a lifeforce for me--this has put a bad taste in my mouth--too bad. Wish they treated their die hard fans a bit better a la Radiohaed, DMB, NIN, Pearl Jam.

...P.S. NIN's fan club is free, and I got fourth row in front of the stage in Los Angeles for $60 each--had to p/u at will call with photo ID--I do hope they at least do that. I expect their concert tix to be outrageous (I'm expecting at least 100 US for the worst seats on the house).

I think in light of how Vertigo did, and how the economy is, an increase in price will be minimal.

Yes, assuming they're all good songs, I'm all for quantity. Especially since these might be the only U2 songs we get until 2014.

"Good song" is too subjective. I would argue that U2 never have intentionally put on a "crap" song on any of their albums. However, there is no way that every fan will like every song on an album. And if there are enough songs on an album that don't appeal to a fan, they then dismiss the entire album. Fair enough - that's how it is for all artists. But what you may call "crap", some may love. Barring a few songs, I think HTDAAB is brilliant and one of the best U2 have produced in years - possibly since AB. Yet many here dislike HTDAAB and prefer the far more boring ATYCLB. I feel AB is great, but I have some issues with JT. Yet even I know I'm in the minority for JT (where it's worshipped by most).

Regarding the topic of this thread, eh. I bought the special edition of the JT re-mastering and am happy. Although I have some issues with JT, I still feel it's the best album of 1987 and one of the best of the 80's. But it also needed a major re-mastering. I have not purchased the other remasters though - didn't feel it was worth the $. I may get them at some point, but not now. My $$ is going elsewhere. The same will be true with the special editions of NLOTH. If I feel it's worth it, I'll get it. If not, then I won't. I feel most box sets aren't worthwhile anyway, so to me it's not a big deal. Just something "special" for fans.

This box set rubbish. I have very bad memories of the last box set crap they released with their last album. A hard book with scribbles and drawings which look like they made when half pissed and also no lyrics or booklet with the "special limited edition" box set. I won't be falling for that money making trick again. The simple "jewel cased" basic edition version will do me just fine thanks! Also while on with the packaging of new albums, I stupidly bought Coldplays last album from the net thinking that it was jewel cased and yet was disgusted to find that it was a "digipack crappy cardboard sleeve" edition. Couldn't find a jewel cased version. What is it with record companies and packaging for new albums when they put them in these crappy cardboard sleeves.

Indeed... every once in a while I get the bad feelings of a cash grab, from this band.

And by "every once in a while" do you mean "pretty much every time they've released something in the 2000s?"

I liked the HTDAAB bonus edition. I thought it was overpriced when it came out, waited a few months, and got it brand new on ebay for $30. I'll probably just pick up the regular edition this time, too, and wait and see what's really worth having once the album has been out awhile. I think it's ridiculous that they're releasing so many different versions. A completist U2 fan (and we all know there are plenty of them) will have to spend upwards of $250, and that's not even counting singles and B-sides. That's the price of over four GA tickets for the last tour!

I'm excited that we finally have a release date and am really looking forward to hearing the new album. I'm just getting tired of feeling like U2 takes advantage of its longtime fans. So many of us made the switch from cassettes and records to CDs and VHS to DVD. Many of us have bought replacement copies of albums. We've bought greatest hits collections for B sides or two or three new songs. We're buying the super deluxe editions of the remasters. When does it end?

See, it doesn't piss me off. It's not like they are reaching into your pocket and taking the money. If you don't want it, don't spend it. Simple.

I like having the super delux remasters, because I like having the bonus stuff. I don't feel they are taking advantage, I don't care. Not like I'm rich, but come on people, all they are doing is releasing things, some responsibility must be placed on those who are buying things that they feel are not worth it.

I don't feel sorry for completists, because it is their choice. Yet again, we find another way to bash the band, the reason we are all here. Take some responsibility.

End of rant.

Yeah, I like to see the deluxe set just because I like design, but I have no compunction to own the stuff. Just cardboard and plastic at the end of the day.

I am intrigued about this film, but again once I see it once, I'd probably never revisit it - unless it is really something special. Maybe when I was a younger man with lots of time to kill...

As far as all these versions, it really is smart business (which some folks don't like to think about). You get the cardboard and plastic fanatics to subsidize all those missed sales on account of file sharing. If you've ever, EVER downloaded music without paying for it, you are a bit responsible for the existence of these deluxe, limited edition packages.

well said. This highlights my point. Don't buy it if you don't feel it is worth it. Simple.

Hey, I like Red Light!

I agree. "Red Light" is a bad-ass song - a groovy, exotic, mature, adventurous, urban-flavored track, with a great chorus and some of Adam's best bass work. It's shocking to think that it came from U2 so early in their career, and before they had even begun working with Eno and Lanois. They had already begun to think outside the box of traditional song structure. And it features one of my favorite lyrics: "It's your own late show / as you jump to the street below / but where can you go / to leave yourself behind?" "Red Light" and "Surrender" are probably my favorite songs on WAR. I end up listening to them both multiple times whenever I put that CD on.

God bless you. I didn't realize that so many fans hated Red Light and Surrender until relatively recently. I think the last 3 tracks of this album might be my favorite consecutive sequence.

Are you blaming U2 for the the advancement of technology (records to CDS, VHS to DVD)? I guess they should never release their older products on updated technology?

"We've bought greatest hits collections for B sides or two or three new songs."

You should really give yourself some credit for personal agency. You bought these things (and will buy them) because you want them, or you won't because you don't. There is nothing more obnoxious than when people do something that they regret and then try to pass the buck.

OMG....you've got to be kidding me!!!!

Surrender was much better live but still an underrated song and 40 was well, amazing live...Red Light was....hmmm....did they ever play it more than twice live? Enough said. Not a good song...but hey man, different tastes for different people. For example...I personally think that No Doubt's "Its my life" is a freakin groovy remake with a kick ass bass groove to it, but some of my friends think I'm gay for saying that. Whaddaya gonna do right?

I don't think number of live plays necessarily equates to quality of song for U2 (A Sort of Homecoming, Acrobat). It's not my favorite song by them, but I think it really works and I love the flow of those last 3 tracks. I know a lot of hardcore fans LOVE the song Seconds, but to me that is the weakest song on the album and really cripples the first part of the record.
