Why is the bass in Please so... off?

Allright, this has been buggin me for a while. On the album version of Please, Adam is playing the bass in a different key from the rest of the band. The result is a bassline that's just kinda... out there y'know?
They fixed this for the single version and the live versions, but my question is, was it done that way on the album intentionally?
If so, why? If it wasn't.. how could they not have noticed? It's wrong for fecks sake!

I'm actually a person who doesn't like Pop very much (I'm sorry, you all know that

) but I think the bass in Please is rather cool.

That song was far better live, though. I missed Popmart and wasn't sad about it but I would have liked to see that song live--and admittedly Please into Streets was great.
