THE SOUL
I posted this over on PLEBA in October:

Note: I got a C on this (we were supposed to write about a person we knew) and my teacher was like "I don't get it"

Mona: it's about this girl I knew in grade school with an eating disorder...and...October is a U2 song...and CD

Teacher: Oh...U2...

Mona: And...it's about...getting... distracted from...important things? Like the song....not really caring about eh...and the other person...um....and...the trees?

Teacher: Oh! U2!

Then she re-read it and I got an A I stole all kinds of U2ey ideas. Sshh don't tell.

To October
Real authentic imitation leather....
Well, whatever will make the bruise better.
Isn't it funny for us fish seeking bikes
how the sea hugs itself into ice?
Beth said We could find a good soul at the flea market,
a strong arrow to help us find the target.

They list the fashion columns opposite the obituaries:
Doe-eyed tombs planted in pride's cemetery.
With the ease of sweet thin Catholic girls and boys,
you're hungry for inside-out, digging a void.
So I tried to cure you, and made you listen to "October,"
but then all I wanted was for Paul to come over....

I, too, think the popular thoughts.
but I don't live in black and white.
I am where the children are;
they stay when I turn out the lights.

You killed the vacuum again and stacked the dishes,
thought about the man next door and imaginary kisses.
I waited for a flood to bowl me over enough
where I could not think -- and instead just love.
We built up the fence and I could not see over.
So I just went to my room and listened to "October."

Somewhere you're thinking the popular thoughts
and reveling in black and white.
Here I am -- where the children are.
They stay when I turn out the lights.

Yet you set your lovely steps
in between where the sidewalk's wet.
As long as you want
you turn the charm on.
And I'll just keep citing the nice times
like we always treated each other so kind.

Weighed down by the popular thoughts,
and yet always light always light,
your last day you wanted to be where the children are,
for someone to wait after you turned off the light.

I thought I was cured when I heard "October,"
but then all I wanted was for Paul to come over.
I wanted to worry about the weather or my posture,
as the children mourned 'never had her, but o we lost her.'

You wanted a flood to bowl you over neough
where I would not think -- and instead just love.
In the summer I go back to "October," back to "October,"
and still I leave when the important parts are not yet over.

Hmmm...speaking of stealing U2 for grades...I did it. We had to find a poem that expressed cynicism. And I thought U2!! So I took Please off of POP. My teacher asked if it was mine and I said "No, it's U2's". He sounded impressed that I knew who they were.

But I did get an A in my interperetation...

Oh, I loved this poem the first time you posted it on PLEBA...

Those last lines remind me of the fact that I bought October in the summer and still think of it as a summer album. But I didn't leave before the important parts were over.

This poem has a lot of depth and rewards re-reading. Thanks.
