LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Audioslave singer Chris Cornell has quit the short-lived "supergroup," citing "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences," he said on Thursday.

Cornell, 42, who rose to fame with defunct Seattle rock group Soundgarden, will reignite his solo career with the May 1 release of "Carry On," his second solo album.

"Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors," the part-time Paris restaurateur said in a statement.

The Audioslave split was not unexpected. His colleagues, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk, have reunited with singer Zack de la Rocha to resurrect their former band Rage Against the Machine, which will play its first show in seven years at California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 29. Rage's plans beyond this show are unknown.

Audioslave formed in 2001, a year after Rage broke up, and recorded three studio albums. In May 2005, it became the first American band to play an outdoor show in Cuba.

Its most recent album, "Revelations," has sold a disappointing 409,000 copies in the United States since its September 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its self-titled 2002 debut sold 3.1 million copies, and the 2005 follow-up "Out of Exile" 1.1 million.

Amid rumors last August that Audioslave had broken up, Cornell told Reuters that the band was like a sociology experiment because of the various members' complex relationships with each other. He indicated that a solo existence could be a less stressful option.

"I think the biggest problem with people surviving in a band and getting along and appreciating each other is just the fact that for the most part musicians aren't the kind of people who concentrate or worry about what the other guy thinks," he said.

"Carry On," produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones), marks Cornell's first solo release since 1999's "Euphoria Morning," which came out two years after Soundgarden broke up.

The Interscope Records release will include "You Know My Name," Cornell's main title song for the latest James Bond film "Casino Royale," as well as a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Among the brand new tunes are "No Such Thing" and "Poison Eye," both described in the statement as having a "harder edge," and the "redemptive" song "Your Soul Today."

The statement also described Cornell as "acrimonious," which a publicist said was the intended term.

I have not read any threads on this site about this band. I have to say that I always had high hopes for all of their albums, but was always disappointed. Not saying I thought they sucked or anything, guess I just wanted them to be great, and they weren't, at least to me. I wonder if Rage now has a future, of this will be a short lived thing.

Eh, I'll always have my Soundgarden albums.

I'm not surprized, he just recently launched a myspace page for his solo work, everyone knows that's the clear sign of troubled waters.

What a strange thing to say in a press release (and to call attention to in an article). Acrimonious isn't exactly a warm and fuzzy word

I'm not surprised. The band started as a gimmick anyway. I'm surprised they came out with as many albums as they did.

Let's just hope any new material from Rage doesn't suck.

Nobody is surprised, but is anyone disappointed? Just curious, I've already stuck my 2 cents in on the band.

Definitely disappointed, too. I also had high hopes. It's not that their stuff wasn't any good, it just wasn't......great. Sucks that there won't be any more to look forward to.

Great news.

Hopefully Chris will give a call to Kim Thayil.

Audioslave was bread and potatoes.
Good but boring.
Rage with Zach + possible reunited Soundgarden=awesometastic

I hope Rage does new stuff  Audioslave was a neutered Rage anyway. Their first album had some good tunes but the second one was boooring.

I think an article I read said that there is "no chance" that Soundgarden will ever get back together. Soundgarden's bassist initiated the breakup, and Cornell followed shortly after, or did he do a Paul McCartney and issue the statement that broke up the band even though another band member had already left? I can't remember.

if they know whats good for them, soundgarden will get back together. the third audioslave album , revelations is great. alot better then the second one. i like some songs off the second one, but not as good as first or third album. The last track on revelations , "moth" has the chrous "I DON;T FLY AROUND UR FIRE ANYMORE!!". i guess thats it,lol. how fitting.

why did Soundgarden break up in the first place? Cornell?

:reject:

As evidenced by his first release post-Soundgarden 'Euphoria Morning' Cornell was headed towards a different creative vibe.
He was listening to Jeff Buckley and the like, he and Thayil (obviously the metal head of the group) weren't seeing eye to eye on their last album 'Down on The Upside'.

That and Cornell was battling addiction and marital problems and their bassist Ben Shepard was a complete fucking knob job who walked off stage on one of their last shows.

Moral to the story is, as MrPryck said, they had run their course.

But that was ten years ago, Cameron has moved on and as great a drummer as he is, the centerpiece of that group was Cornell's voice and Thayil's guitar. It wou;dn't be the same but who would think it ever would. It might be better not having the same lineup, less to live up to. I dunno.
