I wasn't a big fan either LM, but they're on DFA so I had to express some sorrow. I found their last album to be a little bit generic compared with a lot of the stuff DFA puts out. Mofo was a big fan I believe.

Good riddance.

Although most of my hatred for them comes from the fact that I lost my keys during their set (and missed most of brmc's cos I was too busy trying to find my keys), not really much to do with the band themselves. I wasn't a fan, but without the whole lost keys thing I'd probably just be indifferent.

Are you thinking of a different band? Sure don't seem up your alley

I'm pretty sure I saw them open for black rebel motorcycle club sometime around 2005ish.

Fuck. One of the young people on the camp that I help run every year... his twin brother died in a car accident last night. Wasn't even 20. :sigh:

The Rapture is a band who I certainly needed to see live before I had any appreciation for their recordings. The incredible score Pitchfork gave their debut is almost entirely related to their live performances at the time. Their entire show maintained the same sort of energy as the below clip, not really the type of thing a band can keep up as they get older:

The Rapture - House of Jealous Lover(Live on Letterman) - YouTube

Side note, IWB, why have the last two BRMC albums been so horrendous? I don't know how they can follow up two fantastic albums with their two worst. So disappointing.

Wow, that's great. Like Modest Mouse with cowbell.

I wish I knew what happened there. Horrendous is putting it lightly.

I'm glad Burial is still hipster.

Also, I really didn't enjoy The Field's last album. And that's weird cause I should like that kind of music. Are his oher albums any better?

I also didn't care much for his last album, but the two before it are absolute favorites.

I've been strongly considering moving to LA and read an article a couple weeks back about what to expect from moving. The public transport was, clearly, being politely glossed over. The suggestion from the article was that, while it exists, it's just better to have a car...I guess I should read between the lines?

I have a fair number of friends who are carless, including 2 of my roommates.

Depends on the neighborhood you're in, really. Or if you're a snob about taking a bus, because the subway doesn't really cover a wide portion of the city (though they're currently expanding some lines as we speak).

Another housemate rant

We got a new couch. Well, a futon (hope you guys all know what they are). So the old couch, which is comfy as fuck, has been moved to the other side of the lounge room. You can't see the TV if you're sitting/lying on it. The new couch is not as comfy, it's not as long, and it's too high. You can't comfortably have a drink or some nuts or something sitting on the little table next to it, because a) you can't see them and b) it's a pain in the arse to reach over and get it, because the arm rest is too damn high. So I asked, perhaps we could swap the old couch and the futon. It doesn't matter where the futon is, people will sleep on it. Housemate Dave said, and I quote, "part of the reason we've done it like this is because the old couch is getting a little bit worn out and when me and Claire move out (we've all just signed the lease for another year btw) we don't want to buy a new couch." If our third housemate Swiss hadn't brought this futon from his parents' place, the old one would continue in the spot that it is in. Now, I'm not couch specialist, but I'm pretty sure that if people continue to sit or lie on the old couch - yknow, its intended purpose - it's going to suddenly crumble in on itself. And it's fine anyway. But this is the way it is. So now we're stuck with a very comfortable couch that I'm going to be scared to breathe on because it's so precious and an uncomfortable couch that you can't sit/lie on with a drink or nibblies. He's also taken his record player home - "I don't want it getting wrecked and there's no room for it" (it did not get broken in one year of it being here, and there's plenty of room if we move the 748 bean bags that no one uses somewhere else. So I have nothing to play my records on. With the record player he also took home the surround sound unit, which we used for the TV and to play iPod music through. And to top it all off Claire broke my favourite N64 controller.

Like, I think I actually live with 95-year-old women. Maybe I'll take my TV home because I don't want it getting wrecked.

I pay a good chunk (more than I should) of my income just so i can live by myself and avoid housemate shit like that.

Even long time friends that I've decided to live with in the past have turned out to be shitty roommates

I've found I'm much happier living alone, and inviting people over when I want to hang out...even if its more expensive.

I've had my share of shitty housemates and college roommates. I love my current housemate, though, he's pretty much just a slightly older male version of me. He's also got a dog, and she's the best housemate of all. And the house is big enough that if we do cease to get along there's plenty of space to barely have to cross paths. There's four rooms that aren't being used for anything (other living room, dining room, a 3rd bedroom, and an extra room that I don't even know what to call). We could get another housemate and still not be too crowded, but the place is easily affordable with just two of us, so why risk adding a potential shitty person to the mix? Cos yeah, I've lived with people who were friends up until we lived in the same house.

Public transportation here is lacking. Yes, it exists but if you're ever traveling any sort of distance, it takes forever. I love(d) a lot about life here but this is an obvious failing. In all my years here, I've known less than 10 people who were carless.

That being said, as bad as it is, it's better than it used to be…..and no city is perfect.

LA friends, are there any cheap, reputable hostels in good locations? (Ie close to bars, taxis, public transport)

I think there are a couple legit hostels in Hollywood. From there you could check out the cheesy shit on the Sunset Strip, or easily take a single bus down Sunset to the hipster neighborhoods.

In Hollywood, you'd also be close to the subway, which you could take downtown, enabling you to see a lot more stuff as the whole area has really blown up the last 5 or so years.

That sounds good... And the Amoeba is in Hollywood if I remember correctly. Well it's on Sunset Blvd. I will definitely be seeing downtown, we never went in 2010.
