I don't know. Good question. I suppose some people feel the stress means they have stuff to do-some people hate sitting around idle, they're always antsy to be up and moving about. So maybe the stress helps them that way?

I'm not big on stress, either. I deal with it and work through it, but I hate it. I like it when things are calm and relaxing.

Good luck with the assignment.

Personally, I think a little pressure can be awesome. I work best on those terms. Stress, maybe not so much, especially over long periods.

Midterms are ideal for me with regards to the paper. They offer me the easiest stories imaginable and I still get paid the same (that is, a pittance).

It reaches its peak over the last 3-4 tracks. Kind of an endurance test in the middle, like a lot of 60+ min hip-hop albums.

So, what's with this "cloud rap" tag? Since Clams Casino is producing like 1/3 of the artists in the sub-sub-subgenre right now, I think it's fucking amazing. And I like the concept of dudes rapping over psychedelic/ambient beats.

Listening to the double-disc edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack. A whole bunch of comments:

1. Donnie Darko is one of my favorite films, and it's partially because of the fantastic songs included here.
2. Never Tear Us Apart is the only INXS song I like to any substantial degree.
3. Head Over Heels by Tears For Fears is probably among my top 10 new wave songs. Hell, on certain days it's my favorite.
4. Under The Milky Way...damn. I listened to the Church album that one comes from earlier and it was dope and all, but this is the song I've had running through my head all day. Beautiful. It reminds me of Lovesong by the Cure for whatever reason. I'll pair them together on a Desert Island list someday, I'm sure.
5. Why the fuck is the Killing Moon almost 6 minutes long? McCulloch starts getting bored and plays around with the way he delivers the chorus at 3:40. Otherwise, the song is a masterpiece.
6. The score is unsettling and beautiful, even out of context. I'm very pleased.
7. Gary Jules' Mad World is poignant, but Curt Smith's voice is about a thousand times better. I'll take the Tears For Fears version on most days, even though I approve of artists who experiment with the arrangement of the song they're covering, and in context the Jules version is more logical.

I remember having a bit of a discussion over 'Donnie Darko' in a "movie review" thread here a couple years ago. It was fun :).

I like your take on the songs. I love every minute of "The Killing Moon". It's my favorite Echo & the Bunnymen song-so haunting and dark and gorgeous. And "Under The Milky Way" is fantastic, as are "Head Over Heels" and "Never Tear Us Apart". Anyone who pokes fun at '80s music should listen to these songs.

And I like both versions of "Mad World", it's hard for me to pick between them. Gary's version is sad and reflective and mournful, and Tears For Fears' version is a bit more paranoid and fearful.

I like that Oingo Boingo's "Stay" is on the soundtrack, too. I absolutely love that song.

I didn't know that I knew Stay; that was a very nice surprise. Gotta say, Oingo Boingo is one of those bands I haven't checked out because their name is so ridiculous/embarrassing. I'll change that at some point.

How the hell do people say they "work well under stress"? A little bit of pressure, sure, but I fucking hate stress. My first day back and I've had a story dumped on me that needs a photo and story done by Wednesday morning, leaving me one day to do it when I'm already a bit behind. Now I'm miserable.

technically it could be perceived that one works well under stress based on someones perception of stress, whether the person working under such "stress" is actually stressful for that person or not. some people might find 20 dipshits screaming "nigga! Who shot you?" stressful while they're trying to intubate the dead guy in the back of their truck, for me it's just fucking annoying and as long as they don't physically get in my way, we're good. i wouldnt say that means i work well under stress. doing pretty much any kind of office job with a boss breathing down my neck would drive me batshit crazy, and i would consider that to be stress. under those circumstances i wouldn't work well at all. that phrase is really just some bullshit people list, along with "detail oriented", to make themselves look good on job applications.

Guys. I love a fast paced environment!

BoMac and LN7 broke it.

Sorry.

Laz, I like the LOST .gif that you busted out over in the Rate the Song thread. I kinda forgot about that scene. Makes me want to sit down and watch LOST again.

I used that first on NSW.

Still makes me laugh.

Feeling you re: Lost-a-thon.

And I think the best testament to that show is that I have more of a desire to watch it again than any other series I can think of. I did a brief recap of highlight episodes before Season 6 started, and it was just as fun as the first time around.

I've been feeling like re-watching the entire series again for some time now, but haven't gotten around to it.

I will rectify this in the coming days, hopefully.

What did you do on it?

Lighting, Electrical, General running my ass off setting up everything BS, and one other credit, but I don't remember what it is. I own 5% of the movie as a result. I aim to make a cool $5 off the experience.

The whole album on which that song appears, along with a few others from Echo, are really strong throughout. I'm a bit surprised that we do not talk more about that band.

Crocodiles is such an underrated debut. They are a great band, or at least were for a brief period. Now they're in their crotchety old men phase, taking potshots and contributing little of their own to the musical landscape. That said, Crocodiles/Heaven Up Here/Porcupine/Ocean Rain = awesome.

Interesting cover of "The Killing Moon" from Pavement there. Not bad.

The new Blur song sounds really pretty! I like it :). They're supposed to be at the Brit Awards tomorrow, and Fuse is airing that, so heads up for people who live in the States if you want to see that.

Just hear Somebody That I Used to Know on a pop station. I am in a fantastic mood.

I've been hearing that song on VH1 quite a bit lately when I catch the video (!) block in the mornings sometimes. I rather like it. Video's kinda funky and weird, too. I've heard of Gotye before, any other notable stuff by him I should check out?

Yeah, definitely do so. The band name is weird, yes. But they do have some great songs/albums. If you want recommendations or something, let me know.

 Yeah. I think he's the one most people remember from the band (and Mike Nesmith, but he'd be known as, "Oh, that guy with the hat".) so that is strange, indeed. And he was the lone Englishman in the group, too, which kinda sets him apart right there.

*Nods* You described it perfectly. I can remember all the words to a song I haven't heard in 20 years. But forgetting some sort of step in paperwork I often do at my job? Very easy to do, and something I have done a few times. And sometimes memories can blur together, too, and you think something happened in, say, one year, but it actually happened either years before or after that.

The brain is a very strange, fascinating organ.

The Pisces album is my mom's favorite one by them. She remembered reading some review of it once where the writer said that it was the first Monkees album you could listen to the whole way through "without skipping over the embarrassing parts" :p.

I'd have to go back and pinpoint what songs were on which albums. I don't think I ever really paid attention to that part of it all when I'd hear their music. Some of their songs I remember hearing via the band's TV show, anyway.

Isn't Valotte the one that has "Too Late For Goodbye" on it? I like that song, I remember hearing it when I was little. I like the song "Valotte", too. That's all I know by Julian, though.
My mom never really cared for Davy, so I guess that carried over to me. My mom used to be co-president of Papa Nez's fanclub. She knows Henry Diltz and Chip Douglas and one of the writers from the sitcom. She has all sorts of unreleased recordings and stuff. So if I ever want to go delving into Monkees history, I know where to start, LOL.

I just shocked the actual fuck out of my mom with this "eidetic" memory. We were talking about her doing Papa Nez Newsletter and somehow got on the subject of my birthday parties when I was little and I ask her, "Which one was it where there were all these kids sitting on our living room floor and there was this little girl and I stepped on her hand and she got all upset?" She stared at me for a second and goes, "Bullshit, you don't remember that." I go, "Yeah, she was wearing this yellow shirt with like a Care Bear on it and she had blonde hair with a bowl cut, and I was wearing like saddle shoes or mary janes or something." She goes, "No way. You can't remember that. That was your first birthday." Again, I can remember this, but I can never find my keys.

She did correct me on two things, though. I didn't go to the Greek. The 18-month-old fangirl cried out for Pe-Pe at a local show, so I never saw Mike with the Monkees. And it was Peter that asked for my name at the album signing, which was exactly why I couldn't spit it out. And Micky Dolenz was justified in giving me the weird look because I did stand too close to him. Whoops. LOL. Thank God I haven't met anyone famous since, because I think I'd make an ass of myself. And I already do enough of that here.

I read a similar sentiment on Allmusic and Wikipedia. I think it's time to set up the USB turntable and get ripping some vinyl.

"Too Late For Goodbye" is from Valotte. It was the #1 song the week I was born.
